Since I'm here, I believe "Focus or Diversify" is a line that you must walk, not a matter of choosing sides. Let's face it, the one things above all else which technology has accomplished is to increase the rate of change. With companies that come and go, and soon industries following suit, you can't afford to be only capable of one things. You must focus for a degree of expertise that makes your advise worthwhile. However, you must be have options. Don't be WalMart that sells everything a customer may want, but do learn what other specialties you have picked up, enjoyed, and can actually be of use to others while you were "focusing" on your first specialty.

Hi,

I don't really like my current job but anyway, I have to be with it with some commitment. I will spare time doing the internet marketing. I know it will be a long way and nothing can be sure when it will be success but one day!

Thanks

I think you're quite righ, focussing on a few areas where you're diversifying is correct, then advancing at a later stage this year will be beneficial to you. Getting the foundations (and money trickling in) is always the best place to start, then you can begin to seriously build your portfolio.

Thanks for the link and also reminding us about timeboxing. I used to do that and it helped a lot. I'll have to start again.

Good luck on your internet business journey! The journey is definitely an adventure :)

@Scott, large sites certainly have more power down the road. Just look at the big blogs - with readerships in the thousands they can really get their messages across to a large audience. I would ideally like to have several niches but if I saw that one was doing particularly well I'd try to focus on it more and grow it.

@Genesis, try time-boxing - give yourself a block of time, like an hour for example and force yourself to focus on one thing only during that time. I use that approach when I really need to get down to work.

Oh, I hear you! I´m one of those people who gets distracted by new ideas while in the midst of researching the first one, too. While it´s fun to explore, there comes a point when you really must focus on something. I´m trying to do that now. :P

At the moment, I have 4 blogs and a website, with plans for at least one more blog and one more website to be added. However, I´m a work at home mom, so, I´m not struggling with an outside job (although kids could definitely be considered that!). My husband recently left his job as a teacher to look after our two boys while I work in the mornings (as a freelance writer), so that´s helpful. :D

Caroline, there are passionate and valid arguments on both sides of the One Site/Niche vs. Multiple Sites/Niches debate. I personally lean towards the multiple, but then again I have a financial stake in that market so my opinions should be taken with a grain of salt.

Seriously though, my decision a long time ago to focus on numerous mini-sites rather than 1 or 2 large projects came when I saw the topic of a large site that I had invested tons of time and money into suddenly fall out of favor. It was a devastating hit to me.

That's the danger with the "eggs in one basket" route. The theme or genre you build around can lose its market, you or your site can take a PR hit for some reason, or dozens of other things which you can't control could happen to dry up the traffic and profits.

For me, once I recovered from that big hit I decided to focus on multiple smaller projects in lots of unrelated niches. Now, if a site or market dries up, I pitch it and replace it with something new. And in the mean-while, my earnings may drop slightly from a lost market, but it doesn't have a devastating impact and can be replaced fairly quickly.

Of course, the down side to my method is it takes a little longer to build up to a decent regular earnings, where as a single big project can get more of your time and attentions, and build up a revenue stream much faster.

Caroline, sounds like you're doing great... one foot in front of the other! I think it's worth it to spend the time on gaining clarity but you have your process mapped out quite nicely. Keep it up!
