The Power of StumbleUpon For a Brand New Site

August 20, 2008 Posted under: social media by Caroline Middlebrook

Three weeks ago I launched my new blog Life Should Feel GOOD! and other than mentioning it here, I haven’t really don’t much marketing for it yet. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see a massive traffic spike at the end of last week - guess where it came from?

StumbleUpon of course! It has become the number #1 traffic referrer by far and it sent over 500 visitors to the site in just one day and remember that this blog is just 3 weeks old! So I put together a 3 minute video showing the stats.

If you’d like to learn how to use StumbleUpon to drive traffic like this to your own sites then sign up to my Traffic Rush course - 10 of the lessons (along with 12 videos) are completely free. I have embedded a high quality version of this stats video into lesson one but if you can’t wait the 20 seconds it will take you to get the free lessons you can always just watch the YouTube version:

A stumble burst is good, but how have your stats been since then?

Did you see a significant increase in subscribers from the stumble burst?

Although stumble refers the majority of my traffic, I was initially skeptical about the high bounce rates. However, after a few months, the bounce rates have dropped and the visit times have gone up. I would love to know the relationship between the number of times a site comes up and the reviews by stumble users with many fans. It seems like the more fans I get, the more hits I get to my site. Please keep the stumble posts coming, thanks!

Stumble upon is good in that it does increase traffic but not necessarily click through rates. The other thing is that your posts have to be good enough to be stumbled dugg or whatever.

Congrats on your success. How much of your time do you spend on Stumble?

@Dan, to be quite honest not as much time as I used to! These days I tend to just stumble stuff that I really like rather than actually to go the effort of having actual stumbling sessions like I used to.

stumbleupon has been a lifesaver for my blog. I know a lot of people that use stumbleupon as their number one way of getting traffic to their web site. I am not big on Stumbleupon just because a lot of people do not stay at your web site long that come from there.

I am so glad I personally have stumbled upon your blog.

You are going to help me get through so much when I decide to launch my own blog. I’ve been nervous to do it.
I have a question Caroline, how long before one if done right, can expect to see some revenue from ad’s placed on a website? I know other factors such as getting linked in matters too, so how long after you launched did you start to see some money on ads? Did Stumble Upon help you earn more money by bringing more visitors to your site?
Thanks for your help!

@Pete, this blog is not monetized by Ads and if you are referring to AdSense, that does not work very well with StumbleUpon. SU has been responsible for the growth of my RSS readership.

Very interesting indeed, I was a bit confused as to what was your money maker from your site. I’ll be sure to learn more on RSS readership’s and how they benefit one’s site. Thanks for responding back! You’re a big help!

@Pete, have a look in my archives and in particular the stats posts which are posted on the 1st of every month - I describe in detail where my income comes from. The majority of it is not generated directly from the site itself but from spin off products that have been promoted here.

OH Great! I will look into that tonight! Thanks Caroline for leading me in the right direction. It will give me a better idea aesthetically pleasing a well put together blog should look! You’re a great help to us newbies! Keep up the posts!
