The Joys of a Two Day Server Outage

February 12, 2008 Posted under: Miscellaneous by Caroline Middlebrook

in ur serverzRegular readers will have noticed that my blog has been inaccessible for two whole days. This was caused by a scheduled file maintenance operation that went wrong when one of the other users on my shared host having 12 million files in his account which made the file maintenance overrun somewhat!

Anyway the natural thing to do would be to whine and rant about it but instead of that I chose to focus on what has been good about it.

More Free Time

No blog access means that there are no comments to moderate and no new emails from my contact form for those two days. Now I actually enjoy my daily ritual of answering emails and comments but it was also nice to have a break from it for a couple of days. Plus as it happened, on the day that the blog went down (Monday) my partner took an unexpected day off so we had a lovely day together without me having to worry about work. It’s nice when things work out like that.

Justified Procrastination!

The last thing I was working on before the weekend was working up to building some web 2.0 pages on sites like Squidoo and HubPages to promote my ebook. For some reason I kept procrastinating on this job and with the blog being down I was forced to procrastinate further because the content for those pages comes from an older post that of course I did not have access to.

Well technically that’s not quite true as I get my blog emailed to me daily by my backup plugin so I could have installed the blog locally, extracted the database and got to the post but that’s way too much hassle when faced with the far easier option of simply procrastinating for another day! :D

Downtime to Think

Usually I think a lot but sometimes I get so caught up in the doing that I forget to make time to think. I’m so busy responding to emails, writing blog posts, trying to stay caught up with other blogs, catching up on Blog Mastermind, finding time to do a little stumbling, etc etc that I forget to just sit and think about the future and where I am going.

I like to be constantly evaluating what I am doing, and where I am going. I examine my feelings on a subject to see if they give me good vibes or not. One project that I have mentioned a couple of times recently (in comments mainly I think) is that I am considering developing a course as taught by the Teaching Sells program.

However there was something about the idea that was niggling at me; something about the subject matter I had chosen just didn’t feel right. It has been bugging me for weeks, which is why I have not got started on the project in earnest. Today I’ve been on my own in the house with not a lot to do so I’ve spent a couple of hours just mulling ideas over in my head and it has worked wonders! I suddenly came up with the breakthrough idea that I needed to move forward with this project.

I’m going to talk about the project on this blog but in the interests of keeping myself focused and not trying to juggle too many things at once I have two tasks to complete before I start. Firstly I want to wrap up my ebook project and secondly I’m going to do a quick project which will involve me developing a newsletter for this blog. I plan to start work on my course around the beginning of March.

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder?

Well I’ve been away from the blogosphere for two whole days so I’m sure my audience is just pining for me now so I expect to see a massive rush of traffic once this goes live!

Okay maybe not the last point :-)

Anyway it’s good to be back on the air and to those that asked me, no I’m not rushing to dump BlueHost - they screwed up, they are aware of it, we all make mistakes and other than this glitch they have been great. However should they screw up again, I will be looking for a new host!

BlueHost said that it was a file system problem that could take 1 hour. I checked it when you posted at Tweeter that it only affected 5 or 6 domains. It is a surprised that it took that long to get up running again.

But great to see your site up again.

I had a nightmare a year or so back when my shared host managed to simultaneously mess up hosting for four of my sites. Four! One of them was so messed up by their upgrade that it never went back to functioning properly. Needless to say, I switched hosts.

On the other hand, I do find that taking a few days offline is really helpful for my productivity. We recently took our RV to a campground with no web–in fact, not even any electricity–and I came back absolutely overflowing with posts and energy to write posts that I’d been procrastinating on.

I think that getting away from the computer is absolutely vital for bloggers.

I wrote about it on my personal blog:

2 days is a pretty long time Caroline. Have you worked on any backup communication system?

God I missed your blog! I was actually worried about having a virus on my computer, since I have not been able to access del.icio.us for a few months (weird?!)
Relieved to see you back, I get your posts by email but once I have read them, I usually delete them, and I so badly wanted to check your link about making money with Facebook!

I did notice, I was trying to find a post of yours to link to in my latest post, but I found it this morning when you came back to life :)

That is bad luck, I use Bluehost, who have always been very good and I was spared the slaughter.

I used to hos with Site5.com and couple of similar issues that took down my sites (all of them) made me switch. As previously mentioned an issue that takes 2 days to resolve is a complete failure on host part.

I can build a brand new server in that time-span and I would really keep an eye on them if I were you. There are some services that give you a monitor option for your critical sites that will alert you when one of them becomes inaccessible. Since you are gone pro - uptime is important and I think I would have a backup plan :)

Hey Caroline,

First time commenter… I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now. :) Two days is not acceptable for a shared hosting company…I would request at least a free month or two out of them.

How did this outage affect your blog’s income and traffic? I’d be interested in hearing more specifics. It would help those of us who are blog owners.

I had a long outage a few months ago. Drove me nuts. Glad to see you back online. Like you, I chose to look at the host’s overall service (excellent) and decided to stick around.

Hi Caroline, it’s amazing that a ’spell away’ can help us to refocus and reconnect again… I had this in a slightly different way when what at first I thought was just us…then discovered the neighbours, then realised our whole rural village was disconnected for nearly 72 hours! Sounds silly but for the first 24 hours had real withdrawl symptoms…then the rest of the time, felt good to take a break and reflect… much needed and my blog at the time improved from the rest.

Keep up the good work! Enjoy your blog!

Love the cat.

Looking forward to the course you come up with and the newsletter.

It’s strange how addictive answering emails and comments is.

Strangest of all was missing deleting spam when I moved to Gmail. It didn’t take long to start enjoying the change though!

Hi Caroline - what language(s) do you program in??? (I haven’t read all your posts from the very beginning so maybe I missed it) I would definitely pay for a good step by step course that would teach me python, especially if it demoed building a simple, installable app from start to finish. I would guess, tho, that I am in the minority and most of your readers are bloggers not web programmers. glad you are back, Megan

@Linda, I have 5 domains on my account and they were all down though this is the only one that really mattered.

@Micro Niche Finder, no I don’t have any kind of backup (well there was Twitter) and I really don’t think its necessary as at the end of the day this is just a personal blog!

@Erica, well traffic was obviously zero during the outage but it hasn’t really affected income because the majority of it comes from affiliate sales and not contextual advertising. I’m not going to quibble about a few dollars with the company, really I’m just not that bothered by the whole thing!

@Sonia, yeah I found that by accident - I was looking for a picture of a burnt out server or something but I do love lolcats so I couldn’t resist that pic when I saw it!

@Megan, my strongest language is C++ and unfortunately I don’t have any web development skills yet. Really the course is not relevant to this blog as its based around games programming.

@Dennis, lol yes indeed! I’ve had some serious thinking to do about that in terms of delivering value and not just creating another cheesy list!
