Traffic Rush Project - Basic Lessons Complete!

June 16, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

traffic rush

I’ve developed a home study course on the usage of StumbleUpon to drive traffic to your website. This project is the account of my progress in developing and marketing that course. The course is now LIVE, is called Traffic Rush and you can enroll right now at http://www.traffic-rush.net/.

I’ve Reached the Half Way Mark

Since the last update I have been following my own advice and just working through the course one step at a time and I’m pleased to announce that the basic lessons are now all done! There are another 10 lessons to do for the advanced half of the course but I intend to pick up the pace a little now and have these done within the next few weeks.

The Launch Process

As well as developing the course content, I have also been working through the material in the Product Launch Formula course by Jeff Walker. I have now completed three modules and the teaching is getting right into the nitty-gritty of the launch process now.

It’s a shame that PLF wasn’t released a month earlier as it becomes apparent that the way in which I began the project may not have been very effective, at least in terms of ‘traditional launches’. I probably shouldn’t have announced the curriculum so early, as it would have been better to allow my readers to have more of an input into what they wanted to see in the course. Also, I’ve been far too up-front about the whole thing, apparently I’m supposed to be a lot more shady and be teasing you more :-)

Earlier this week I talked about the importance of applying what you learn in your own unique voice, and this was triggered by an area of PLF that I am not really enjoying. A large part of module 3 has walked us through a complete launch process and while that has been very interesting and has given me lots of ideas, a lot of attention has been on the specific copy used in the marketing emails. Jeff is a nice guy but I don’t like his writing style. 99% of what he writes makes me think “euw, I would never write that”.

I think this is a reason why so much of the Internet Marketing industry has a bad name. PLF was originally released back in 2005 (I think) and since then it has been used to launch hundreds of products including many big launches by big names in the industry. All these guys use Jeff’s techniques and I think the cheesy style of marketing rubs off. If you catch me writing cheesy copy then feel free to slap me around the head with a large slab of cheddar!

Traffic Rush Launching In July

This year’s Thirty Day Challenge kicks of officially in August and I want my schedule clear during that month. I certainly don’t want to wait until September so that pretty much forces me to launch some time in July. Leading up to the launch I am going to run a StumbleUpon Challenge which I’ll announce the details of in a later blog post so keep an eye out for that.

Distribution Technicalities

Now that I am nearing the launch I need to think more carefully about some of the technical details. There are going to be two methods of delivery. For those people who choose to buy the whole course I will send them a digitial download containing all of the articles and videos in a single package. So I need to find some kind of download manager to handle that. I have heard of a piece of software called DLGuard which I shall look into for that.

The trickier problem is handling those people who choose to sign up to the free lessons only. For these people they will be sent an auto-responder message once per week containing a link to the article online. I have two problems to solve here. Firstly, I want to password protect the page. For the moment I have put a static password on the pages but of course that is not secure as that could simply be passed along or posted online. Ideally I would like some kind of dynamic password system but I don’t even know if that exists.

Also there is the problem of delivering the videos. So far I have created almost a dozen videos to go with the basic lessons but I want to protect these so that they are only available to people who have enrolled in the course. So I have the security issue to deal with there. But also, I need to protect the bandwidth in some way. I want people to be able to access the videos but ideally just once so they can download them to their computer and watch them. I don’t want somebody to be able to stream the video over and over using up valuable bandwidth.

So, I have no clue where to start in terms of video hosting. If anybody has any expertise in this area I would be most grateful for your advice! If you own a video hosting service that meets my needs then feel free to post a link to it in the comments.

i like your posts too.. lot of indians are reading your posts…

I just laugh reading how you do all that sort of acting!
SOmetimes you talk about your anxiety, inability to work, broke up with partner, the interest income from your bank, etc.

Have you ever thought of making a career in acting? has someone suggested you that? If i was anywhere near you, i would suggest you just that….. Believe me, seriously you seem to be very good at engaging people and acting..
There is no age for starting your career in acting. try out starting.. i am sure there are not many people out there as talented in “acting” as you!

Good to see you are making progress! Can’t wait to read your final results!

Caroline there is quite a few video hosting services around that will let you do this. (just do a google search)

If i was in your place i would rather just get an extra dedicated server from serverbeach for 100-150 dollars a month. Those servers come with enough bandwidth to easily handle your videos. (youtube use to be on serverbeach, until google bought them out)

For DLGuard, you can use the single product or membership option (using the email as username and receipt as password) to login. I personally use it, can’t be happier.

I never tested this setup before, but DLGuard has a free product option that will display sign up form (name & email). You can integrate this with GetResponse seamlessly. With Aweber, it can work but it currently is a workaround that Aweber frowns upon.

If you combine the single product and membership option, you can allow the members to view the page only if they have registered above. A randomly generated receipt will be the password to login to members area. (each member has unique username and password), so you can track downloads within DLGuard.

In DLGuard, you can set download time to x hours or y times. I use lighttpd with secure download modules to create dynamic URLs and only allow streaming. I believe you can adjust this easily to allow 1-time download but still use dynamic urls to the videos.

I use my own VPS so I can customize the server.

There are other possible options, but since you mentioned DLGuard…

If bandwidth is more of an issue, you can try Amazon S3. The rate is $.15 per GB transfer.

Feel free to email me if you need more information.

@Jacky, it’s wonderful that you should think that I have been ‘acting’ about my personal life. That shows me how far I have come in the last few weeks. I only write the truth.

@Vlad, hmm that’s too expensive - the course is going to be quite cheap and I don’t think the sales are likely to justify that cost plus this is a one-off course, so I imagine that sales will only last for a short while so that won’t justify a fixed monthly fee.

@Hendry, thank you very much, that’s extremely helpful!

@caroline, i was not kidding when i said that you should try acting. You are seriously good at that..
Regarding your product - Consider using clickbank’s services for that and offer high commissions to affiliates using clickbank (atleast 75%) That why you can skyrocket the sales and affiliates like me may be willing to promote your product…… good luck..

Caroline,
I’ve been in love with your blog since the beginning and I’m amazed how far it’s grown. Truly inspiring.

I’ve recently tried Blip.tv to host my videos and I think it’s excellent. I signed up for a free acount and I’ve uploaded 20 videos so far. They allow uploads up to 1 GB each! They will convert your videos to high-quality .flv and provide a player for you that you can customize and post on your own site. They feature cross-posting your videos to other video and social sites if you want. They also keep a copy of your original, unconverted videos on their servers and provide a download link that you can post on your own sites. How nice of them.

If you want to password-protect your videos, you will need to pay for a pro-account that is $8 per month or a 1-year subscription of $96. They have accepted all of my videos so far as long as the videos uploaded are not too commercial in nature. You can read their FAQs at http://blip.tv/faq/
Hope this helps Caroline. Keep up your inspiring work.

Acting. Hmmm. Wow, if you are acting, then I am a terrible judge of character.

I am really anxious to get the first part of the SR course. Honestly, I am having trouble imagining how there can be that much content about SU — but then that is probably precisely the point. If I knew what I needed to know to understand that question, I would not need the course (which I obviously do). Does that make sense? LOL.

Caroline,

“I think the cheesy style of marketing rubs off.” Too true! I wrote a few posts on this a while back when yet another program I was considering went into slimy, infinite, annoying tease mode.

Cut-and-paste marketing. SO insulting to the potential customer!

You are anything but annoying, you’re just keeping us up on the process, and thank goodness you are never shady.

I shall send you a nice Vermont cheddar if you ever get cheesy.

:)

Regards,

Kelly

Hi Caroline

(trying this post again - apologies if a repeat. I think I had too many links in original, which is why it didn’t show up!!)

Great to hear the work is progressing, and I hear on the grapevine that even the free level of your course is going to have some great value! :-)

Sorry about the long ‘ramble’ here, but thought that you (and anyone else) might be interested in a few alternative ways of delivering ecourses? Just in case! Although I do like the sound of DLGuard!! Will look at that one too - thanks! (also like -ejunkies)

Anyway, I am not sure how much ‘control’ you want in terms of ‘delivering’ your products such as ‘ecourses’ - especially given that your approach to delivering this particular ecourse is already decided (except for some techie issues), but for future courses/training perhaps? …

In particular, there are several online ‘e-learning’ portals, which do everything for you. All you do, is be the ‘teacher’, provide the content, look after your students, etc.

One excellent one is the ‘Nuvvo’ e-learning portal where you can create your own online ’school’, ‘college’ or ‘university’ for free (now called ‘LearnHub’). It used to be primarily for courses/tutoring, but is now much more interactive and has become more of a social media, community, networking-type site, where you become the authority, teacher, student, and build communities, create portfolios and share, etc.

Your courses can also be monetized if you want (so can have both free and paid offerings of your courses). In addition to an ‘animated tour’ on the site, there are downloadable pdfs with all the features here - http://learnhub.com/about/info-for-press-and-bloggers

LearnHub supports multimedia, video for free - and, while it has become community-based, you can create private course environments for your enrolled students (password restricted access and personal workspaces), with for example, white-boards, document sharing, lesson editors, report generators to track student progress, video, audio and more (pre-recorded-written and/or live tutoring).

Of course, it depends on your content as to the resources you want to use and you don’t need to go to this level, but its a great option to have re: the private, interactive working areas for your students, free video support, and ease of use automatically created for you, at no cost.

I haven’t fully explored the ‘new’ look of this site, but it does look interesting, and I will certainly be joining as both host/teacher and student!

There are quite a few others out there, albeit more focused on just teaching and less on web2.0-style community sharing sites (eg Bastiet Learning University) - or multimedia courses on the Talkshoe podcasting site - such as the ‘Entrepreneurship and Business course’. However, I am not sure exactly how Talkshoe works as an ecourse hosting platform in terms of ‘private access’.

Again, I am not sure if these suit your needs/preferences for now, but for later perhaps ….

And just thought, while on the topic of delivering both free and monetized ecourses with multimedia and video/hosting issues, I would give you (and anyone else) info. on alternative options for delivering them to your students, especially with the convenience and ease of use.

But I also know (or think) you prefer the self-hosted options and greater control, rather than other hosting platforms (except for the video issue) :-)

Let me know if you want any more info. though?
(I also have a video showing you exactly how it all works, in setting up your own ‘virtual universities’, so if you are interested, let me know and will upload it for you
:-)

Looking forward to your course! :-)

Kind Regards
Meg

Megan McCs last blog post..Returning Soon with more Social Media and Free Membership Resources

@Megan, hi Meg thanks very much for that info. The current course is not quite that involved - a series of HTML pages and accompanying videos, there isn’t any kind of interactive element or coaching involved. However, I might look into some of those products for one of my other projects that I have lined up.

A single concise blog post could cover what you need to know about SU.

Jezs last blog post..Free Stock Images

@Jez, I used to think that everything that could be said about StumbleUpon had already been said but once I started writing down my ideas I found that I had so much more to say than even a whole series of blog posts could cover, hence the course.

Caroline,

I am certainly glad that you are being true to yourself and not being “more shady”. I like your style, you have a way of building trust and I doubt very much that I would be so interested in StumbleRush if it felt like so many other internet marketing sleezathons.

Derek.
