Stumble Rush Is Now Called Traffic Rush

August 27, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

traffic rush

Some observant people have already spotted that I changed the name of my Stumble Rush course to Traffic Rush yesterday. This has also involved a domain change. In this post I’ll explain why it has been changed, the implications for students and affiliates and also cover some of the technical details of domain redirection.

Why The Name Changed

StumbleUpon weren’t happy with the use of the word ’stumble’ in the name of the course and also of the use of the logo. Although they are happy for people to sell guides, courses etc about the use of StumbleUpon to drive traffic they want to ensure that there is no possibility of people thinking that these products are actually produced by them. I added a disclaimer to the site but it wasn’t enough so I had to change the name and the domain. Luckily, it was very easy and quick to do.

I remember when I first held the naming competition I did wonder if I might run into legal problems but then dismissed it as I assumed that seeing as the word ’stumble’ is a regular English verb that it would be fine. If I produce another similar product such as a Twitter course or something, I would contact the company involved beforehand to check that they approve of the name before I went ahead.

The new name is Traffic Rush and the new url is http://www.traffic-rush.net/ Traffic Rush is probably a better name anyway as at least it gives a hint as to what the course is about! Stumble Rush doesn’t really mean anything unless you already know that the course is about StumbleUpon.

Students Of The Course

For those students on the free course, the links to the lessons are delivered by email. I have changed the links in the autoresponder sequence to the new domain so any new messages sent will now have the new name and url’s. However all of the old links still work as they just redirect to the same location on the new domain so I haven’t bothered doing a broadcast.

For those who purchased the full course the story is the same. The old links simply redirect to the new ones so it doesn’t matter if they continue using the old ones. The graphics are all the same as before so I suspect that most people won’t even notice so I’m not going to send out new links as it might lead to confusion.

Affiliates of The Course

I modified the link in E-Junkie to point to the new domain so that all existing affiliate links will continue to work as before. However, one thing that you might want to do is update your graphics. I’ve had all of the banners and cover graphics re-done but if you copied the graphics to your own server you can grab the new ones here:

Video Watermarks

Currently the videos are only distributed via the amazon S3 server that I setup for it. One of the mini projects I am going to do shortly is to distribute the videos that accompany the free lessons to a whole bunch of video sharing sites such as YouTube, Revver etc so I’ll re-encode them with a new watermark when I do that. However, where I’ve talked about Stumble Rush I can’t change that heh - well I could do a voice over but I won’t bother lol!

Technical Details

The first job was to transfer the actual website to the new domain. This was simplicity itself - from the WordPress dashboard, click Manage and then Export. This allows you to export your entire website as a single file and then you import that to your new installation. This only took a few minutes and everything was preserved including things like the password on the lessons.

The second step was to point the old url’s to the new ones. For this I used something called a 301 redirect which says to Google that this redirection is permanent. This is achieved using an .htaccess file.

I used this in two ways. Firstly for each of the lessons I did an explcit redirect just to make sure that a lesson link from the Stumble Rush domain would automatically load the same lesson from the Traffic Rush domain. Here is the redirection rule for the first lesson:

Redirect 301 /introduction-to-stumbleupon-126373828/
http://www.traffic-rush.net/introduction-to-stumbleupon-126373828/

Then I used a blanket redirect which grabs anything from the old domain and points it to the new domain. This is two lines of code:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*stumblerush\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.traffic-rush.net/$1 [R=301,L]

That’s all there was to it, pretty simple really. Let me know if you notice any links that haven’t been redirected properly.

Surpised that you had to change the name, but at least it sounds like you have it all worked out for the new domain.

I can’t believe they got upset about this. Oh well, I guess that’s just how it goes. Stumble Rush was just so much more catchy because people could get the point that it was for StumbleUpon.

Sorry to hear about that. With the 30 day challenge coming to an end, I’m looking forward to completing the Stum… Traffic Rush course.

During the 30DC I identified an evergreen niche, the keyword starting with a company name. I was surprised at the lack of competition and got quite excited. I thought to myself, ‘What is the difference between website acmegoldwidgets.com and a retailer having URL bestbuy.com/acme-gold-widgets ?’

I was just about to register a perfect domain when I got a case of the ‘too good to be trues’. Searching for ‘acme website name’ the first result was a legal case result. They are a monster company so that was the end of that one.

@Ultimate, that’s not necessarily a good thing though as there’s probably not that many people that realise that SU can deliver traffic so if they saw the name Stumble Rush without an explanation it probably wouldn’t give much of a clue!

@Derek, yeah I did the same thing! I found a bunch of good keywords that looked good and then I realised they were product names or company names. Bummer huh? :)

It’s terrible to pour your heart into a project for so long with a very specific name in mind, only to have it yanked out from under you. But I suppose in hindsight, it should have been predictable. It was probably less a case of SU actually getting upset than a CYA formality. If one honest IM guru succeeds with a product using their name, they may have to deal with less honest knockoffs in the future.

You probably could have prevailed in court if you had simply dropped the use of their logo, since “stumble” is a generic word (Sting lost a cybersquatting lawsuit on that basis), but you did the right thing, karmically speaking.

‘Traffic Rush’ sounds good and looks like you a good domain name. If there was some PR from this then probably it is good for your course - added publicity.

@Andre, it doesn’t matter - all the traffic that was going to the old site is just redirected to the new one so nothing has changed. My graphic designer also did the rework for me very cheaply and the whole changeover was completed in 24 hours so it really wasn’t a big deal at all. If it had been a physical product with stationery it would have been a different story!

So now you must claim the rights to Traffic Rush.

Ha, yeah, that would have been a crazy ordeal if it was a physical product and you had boxes of them stacked to the ceiling!

I actually like Traffic Rush better.

Cheers!

I read lesson 5 this morning and the videos still have the old URL splashed across the bottom. Not sure you need to change them, but thought I’d let you know just in case.

I’m ashamed to say that I’m one of the people who purchased the whole course and then let it linger in my inbox… I’ve read the whole course through once, but haven’t implemented any of it. When I saw this post I thought “Doh!” If I’d been working through the course, I probably would have noticed the name change! Starting today I’m going to read the lessons from the beginning again and implement them as I go.

I liked both names, and I did like the SU logo in the traffic light. But, hey, as you said Caroline, Traffic Rush is more descriptive of what the course teaches. Either way, great material and thank you again for putting it together.

P.S. The redirect for lesson 6 is malfunctioning. I get a 404 error.

In my opinion, I prefer “Traffic Rush” than “stumble Rush” name :)

By the way, I noticed that certain video can’t play online; for example: Lesson #4. I need to download it if I want to watch…

Okay, this is my review on “Traffic Rush“: I can say your Traffic Rush is really good and helped me a lot. This whole month, I’m focused lesson #1 to #4. I can see my new blog (already 1 month yesterday) receiving 17.6 % traffics from SU.

Now, I’m still in Lesson #5. Sometime I need to go back to the Lesson #3 & #4.

Anyway, I’m just giving out my “Traffic Rush” experience with you and your readers :)

Thanks for your “Traffic Rush”!

@Sarah, yeah re-encoding the videos is a lot of work, not worth my time at the moment but I might get around to it in due course.

@Cathy, hehe don’t feel bad - that’s very common indeed. Fully implementing the course is really quite a bit of work! And thanks, I will look into the problem URL.

@Mistic, thanks for the review and its great to see it working for you!

Sorry to hear you had that problem.

I too have been contacted by a company about having their name in my url - as far as I can see there I no open and shut case for companies that “claim” a word as part their domain - it seems nuts to me that SU gave you this crap . . . . I recently read an article from the WSJ that mentioned that companies such as Xerox just offer to buy the url when it contains their name - it is probably quicker and better PR to do so than to start the usual US game of suing someone . . . pity they made you back down.
