Stats & Analysis for November ‘07

December 2, 2007 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

November has been a very odd month for me. Stat-wise things have improved massively this month as you’ll see but over the last couple of weeks I have had some personal issues which have made it very difficult for me to work and this situation is likely to continue for at least another week. It will pass in time, but the next fortnight are likely to be a bit wobbly.

Blog Stats

The growth of the blog has utterly amazed me this month - it has grown in every way far beyond my original goals which I thought were ambitious already.

RSS Subscribers

As I say every month, my RSS subscriber number is my most important statistic as that represents those people that have actively asked to read what I have to say, which makes me all warm & fuzzy inside :) Last month I ended on 259 and I set myself a goal of 450 for the end of November.

rss subscribers

The graph shows a sharp growth at the beginning and I have already analyzed and documented that growth earlier in the month. That took me to around 550 subscribers, but I am completely clueless at to what happened about a week and a half ago - the number just suddenly jumped by about 250 in one day to over 800! I really have absolutely no idea why this is and for a couple of days I assumed it was a mistake but the numbers have held out and right now it sits at 885 which is lovely.

So a big *wave* to all of those people who have joined me this month! As far as growth in general goes, I would like to see something like 30% growth every month which would give me a December goal of 1150 subscribers but that seems like such a huge number, I’d be happy if I hit the 1000 mark in December.

Traffic Numbers

november traffic

I had just over 11k unique visitors last month and that has trebled to almost 35k for November. My RSS trebled too so it’s nice to see a correlation between traffic and RSS numbers.

The graph clearly shows the early spike which I explained earlier but do you see that second smaller spike about half way through the month? That would be the StumbleUpon Thank-You post which brought me an enormous amount of abuse!

Traffic Sources

november traffic sources

Again, the pattern is very similar to previous months - the vast majority of my traffic comes from referring sites and only just over 3% is from search engines. I had wanted to see more search engine traffic and I am in terms of raw numbers 1400 up from 450 last month, but that is simply a reflection of the overall growth so I’m not sure of that’s good or bad!

Keywords

The majority of searches are for my name but another large source of search engine traffic this month has come from various Twitter related searches. I am hoping that the Twitter guide is the kind of post(s) that can continue to generate SE traffic for a long time to come. This is something I need to do more of I think.

One thing I notice is that I get searches related to just about everything I write about, including people - Ed Dale, bum marketing, Facebook, StumbleUpon, keyword research, blog commenting, embedding YouTube videos etc etc. This indicates that just about any post can get traffic albeit in small amounts.

Now for some funny ones:

“big juicy boobs”

Check!

“bum enlargement”

Hmm, not today thanks :-)

“can I get projects that do with eggs”

Whatever floats your boat!

“juicy caroline”

Ermmmm :-o

“wasting my time and I hate you for that”

Well I’m sorry!

Referral Traffic Breakdown

The last couple of months traffic have been dominated by StumbleUpon but this month I have hugely diversified my traffic which I think is a good thing as it’s no good to rely on a single traffic source. StumbleUpon have still sent me over 12k visitors which is more than last month but that only accounts for 27% of the traffic unlike last month’s 63%.

  1. StumbleUpon - 12,295 visits, 27.4%
  2. Direct - 6,227 visits, 13.9%
  3. Lifehacker - 4,062 visits, 9%
  4. Twitter - 2,905 visits, 6.5%
  5. Del.icio.us - 1,606 visits, 3.6%
  6. ProBlogger - 721 visits, 1.6%
  7. Net Profits Today - 573 visits, 1.3%
  8. Search Engine Guide - 549 visits, 1.2%
  9. Entrepreneur’s Journey - 489 visits, 1.1%
  10. Sphinn - 449 visits, 1%

Now here is what I find especially interesting: If I deduct all of those large traffic sources, and deduct direct traffic, google etc that still leaves me with 9,180 visitors from smaller traffic sources! That just goes to show just how much all the small links and comments etc add up - don’t neglect the small stuff!

Blogs That Sent me Traffic

I have had a massive amount of traffic come from other blogs compared to last month. I already listed some of the big ones in the above list, and I like to link out to as many as possible, so here is my top 15:

  1. ProBlogger, 721
  2. Net Profits Today, 573
  3. Search Engine Guide, 549
  4. Entrepreneur’s Journey, 489
  5. Newest on the Net, 328
  6. DoshDosh, 267
  7. Steven Aitchinson, 226
  8. 45n5, 224
  9. Labnol, 186
  10. Read Write Web, 186
  11. Web Worker Daily, 163
  12. Josh Spaulding, 146
  13. Vandelay Design, 94
  14. Bloggadollar, 91
  15. Stephens Lighthouse, 79

Most Popular Posts

These have been the most popular posts throughout November and the numbers come from an aggregation of Google Analytics and Feedburner. I have put all of the Twitter guide posts together as they dominated my top 5 otherwise.

  1. Twitter Guide (main page & posts together) - 55, 133 views (!!)
  2. Do You Thank Your Stumblers? - 14,212 views
  3. Do You Have a Blog Commenting Strategy? - 3,474 views
  4. Stats & Analysis for October ‘07 - 3,152 views
  5. Boost Your StumbleUpon Traffic With Outbound Links - 1,480 views

What interests me about this is the sheer amount of traffic that has come into the good posts. What this tells me is that it is worth putting in the effort to creating outstanding pillar content such as the Twitter Guide because it brings a tremendous amount of traffic, links & RSS subscribers.

As much as I try to post daily on the blog, I think going forward I will worry less about post frequency and concentrate more on post quality. I am starting to get a feel for what people like to read, which is instructional-style guides and my progress reports such as this very stats post.

Business Stats

Drum Roll…. in the month of November I earned a total of: $343.47

Money Earned From This Blog

  1. $300 in 20 Days Challenge - $250.57
  2. Zen to Done ebook - $42.75
  3. Blog Mastermind - $35
  4. Deal Dot Com - $7.52

Money Earned From my Niche Site

  1. Adsense - $7.63

Now it’s obvious to see that the biggest earner was the $300 Challenge and of course that was a one-off promotion, as was the Zen to Done ebook. However I am hoping that in December I will earn money from the challenge itself and I also have a couple of other affiliate products that I will to promote (ebooks that I have bought). Plus I have my own ebook coming out soon which I hope will generate some revenue.

A couple of other things to note - firstly, not all of this money is in my bank. In fact, most of it is not and with services such as Adsense there is a minimum commission so if I don’t make it, I’ll never see any of the money. Which brings me to my second point - the only revenue earned from the niche site so far is the $7.63 from Adsense which is hardly worth the time spent so far! However, I am learning a lot and wish to continue with this site.

One last point about money - last month I said I was going to get ads on this blog and open up direct advertising spots and the only thing holding me back was getting a new theme. I didn’t get around to it so that hasn’t happened. So that’s annoying because direct advertising is usually sold on a calendar month basis meaning that it is probably closed off for December so that could delay that source of income until January! That is becoming a priority now.

Other Bits & Bobs

I started to track my time during the first half of the month but that all went out the window when I got ill earlier. I have been staying with family, borrowing laptops and just trying to do whatever work I can do here and there and haven’t used the timer. So the second half of the month really has been a total mess productivity wise as I suspect the first half of December will be too.

Anyway, onwards and upwards! I am thrilled with the progress this month in every area and it’s really encouraging to see some actual revenue. What’s interesting is that I expected revenue to grow very slowly, I didn’t expect to go from $0 to $350 in one month.

But that is good because in my original income projection, I imagined I would start earning from the first month and of course I didn’t so it has evened itself out in the end and I am actually ahead of my original target now. If I stay on target I will be earning a full time income within my first year in business.

Caroline, I don’t think that’s too bad, I made about 80.00 and so now its on to December. Looks like the challenge worked. As for your RSS Subs, thats is incredible by any standard, I am happy for you and frankly envious of what you have accomplished.

This is really interesting for newbies such as myself who wonder how one actually makes money from blogging. It is interesting that the niche website is a long way behind this blog.

I am also following the $300 challenge, so we shall see what comes of this.

congrats! looks like the money’s starting to trickle in now…

about quality vs quantity, that’s so true! it’s amazing how easily bloggers (including myself) get carried away by the urge to post…i’m still trying to overcome it :)

btw i also get weird incoming searches - for example:

“+91 Dhaval @YAHOO.CO.IN OR @REDIFFMAIL.COM OR @GMAIL.COM OR @INDIANTIMES.COM OR @VSL.NET.IN”

my blog doesn’t even show up in the results - atleast not in the first few pages…so it might be some weird bug somewhere in feedburner :P

Okay, some quick money making ideas for you right now. offer a 125×125 ad for $xx and then prorate it from the moment it is placed. Second, I ran into a product called BANS (build a niche store), set up an account and blog about it and then put one of their affiliate banners on your site. You will make a 44 commission for each sell.

Even though I don’t have a great site right now, I would place an ad on your site. You have a plenty or room on the right sidebar. Please let me know when you are going to place ads on your site, I want to put one in here.

Follow my advice and you will double if not triple you income for December.

Caroline,
1) Congratulations on the traffic increase. That is super.
2) Thanks for the effort and the sharing that this post takes. It is very helpful.
I need to do more of the same.
3) I will say the income figures are good for two months, but not good for the volume of traffic, I think.
In my case I have noted blog readers are not buyers/ad clickers, while web site browsers are. So I use my blog primarily to generate traffic for my web site.

Cheers,

Those are cool numbers Caroline. It just goes to show that you are doing fantastic and are an inspiration to many people. This is a real treasure to keep!

I’m sorry to hear you are sick, as a matter of fact it is hardly noticeable if it wasn’t for you mentioning it. So this means you are still doing great regardless.
Don’t be too hard on yourself as from time to time things do go haywire.

It is what you make of it that matters and it looks like you have nothing to worry about.

Just as a point of interest and I know this is my unique behaviour, but it may explain something - I’m not sure.

I subscribe to a dozen or so feeds - some related to my niche and the rest to IM blogs. So, I have Darren Rowse, Yaro Starak, Blog Herald, etc - the ones you might expect to see. Then there is Caroline Middlebrook, Skelliewag and Courtney Tuttle. The last three are the ones I go to first. In fact I haven’t checked the major blogs much recently. The content in those, although I am sure it is sage advice and the wisdom of experience, does not match what I perceive to be the ‘real’ world of blogging I get from my favourite sources.

My good wishes go out to you now and I hope you’re comforted in all the support that is coming your way. I’m not sure what will hit us all when you are back at 100% output!!

1. This is awesome and good news.
2. Congratulations and BRAVO!
3. It just goes to say that with determination, dedication, discipline, decisions, date (records), and last but not the least, diligence - SUCCESS is inevitable.
4. To balance, all I know you can add as a secret sauce now is to PRAY, READ, REST, SING, SMILE, EAT and THINK! And why will you care to be doing those? Because you are destined for the TOP!
5. What Heather said is so direct on the head of the nail. Many of the times, it is better to be where you are building by wisdom, establishing by understanding and increasing by knowledge than the other way round.
6. What I know is that if you do work that you love, and the work fulfills you, the rest will come. - Oprah Winfrey
7. Formula for success: Rise early, work hard, strike oil. - J P Getty
8. Remain blessed and a blessing.

@Mike, good point - I just checked my feedburner stats, only 83 email subscribers so I don’t hink that’s it.

@Serge, I am looking for a new theme to support advertising more easily - I should have one fairly soon now so watch this space.

I’m so glad you’re seeing some money coming in! Your blog is one of my first stops every day. I don’t know which I enjoy most: the quality of your information, the generosity you demonstrate so frequently, or your fine writer’s voice.

You have continued to produce such wonderful posts in the last few weeks while 1) you’ve been ill, and 2) life has been chaotic, so just imagine what you will achieve when you are healthy and settled again! I can hardly wait to see it.

Awesome Caroline. Your blog becomes so popular in such a short amount of time.

Btw, did you still track the time you spend on various activities? I enjoy that section very much.

Caroline,

You are back! Welcome back to you!!!

WOW! I mean W-O-W, your success and your growth are unbelievable and so inspiring.

Your numbers are mind blowing and I can only wish of the day where I’ll have such monumental numbers to share with other bloggers.

Caroline, you show over 12,000 visitors coming from StumbleUpon, is it possible to know if this organic traffic from StumbleUpon or did you pay for some ads.

I’ve been using StumbleUpon for a couple of months now and I do find they offer some serious results.

Thanks for sharing your experience and your insight. It’s great to learn from you and it’s good to see your progress.

@Hendry, I haven’t been tracking time over the last couple of weeks as I haven’t been able to work properly at all. I am just catching moments to work here and there when I can so I won’t bother trying to track until I am properly working full time again.

@Gisele, Yes I am back hehe. I have not ever paid for a single penny in advertising - all my traffic is organic.

Hi Caroline,

You got over 12,000 visitors from stumbleupon ALL organic?

What am I missing? Would it be possible for you to perhaps go over your techniques in a future post?

Right now, I pay for ads on stumbleupon with a small budget and I really don’t get ANYTHING close to that.

Have you written tips in the past that could help me understand this more?

Thanks,

Gisele

Caroline,

You continue to inspire me. I am working through the Thirty Day Challenge at my own pace and learning tons. I’m on day 10 and looking forward to creating my own niches over the next few weeks. Your blog is where I learned about the Thirty Day Challenge and I will always remember that — thanks again.

Hoping you are feeling better real soon. Keep up the great work!

Take care,

@Gisele, the thing about StumbleUpon is that beyond a few basics (ensuring the post is put in the right category, there aren’t too many ads on the page and so on), once a page is submitted to SU, it’s beyond your control.

What happens is that as soon as it is submitted it starts to get traffic and then you hope that you get thumbs up. If you do then that sends more traffic and the more thumbs up you get in a short space of time, the more traffic you get. At the end of the day to get lots of traffic you must write content that people will want to vote for - that’s it!

December 7, 2007

Concerning your RSS spike, I just completed a series of posts (Partially inspired by your negative SU experience) that received quite a bit of negative SU attention as well. In fact, one of the posts got so many Thumbs Down it received no direct traffic.

The point is, in my last post I broke down the source traffic and found the trolls actually sent me some quality traffic, someof which subscribed.

I had a similar spike in RSS subscribers to the one you had, of course, on a much smaller scale.

The article title is “Use StumbleTrolls to Boost Your Stats”. My signature links to the article if you are interested in reading it.

Thanks so much Caroline for getting back to me.

I talked about you and your success this morning at my master mind virtual meeting. All the members were impressed and couldn’t believe it.

I’ve been submitting my posts to stumbleupon since November and will now to back in time to start from the beginning of my blog.

So, we’ll keep writing good content.

Thanks again Caroline!

I really appreciate the interpretation of the analytics - I use it but have never analyzed it as thoroughly as you have done here - there is obviously a wealth of information and insight that can be gathered about what is working and why. This can be used to formulate strategies for improved success.

I really like how much you treat your blog as a disciplined business - it is an obvious key as to why you have been and will continue to be so successful.
