Stats & Analysis for May 2009 – $1,627 Earned

June 1, 2009 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

May has been a very slow month in lots of ways and now we have the sleepy summer coming up…

Income

Total income earned during May 2009 – $1,627.66

Well this has been a bit of a funny month income wise. I noticed a significant drop in the sales of my own products so I expected the overall figure to be down a lot but some other affiliate sales seem to have made up for it instead so I’m happy with the overall figure.

Subscribers

Subs at the end of April: 8,827

Subs at the end of May: 9,171

New Subscribers in May ‘09: 344

The growth in new subs has slowed quite a bit this month though I only really wrote one real post in the whole of May! The others were sales pitch so don’t really count. The low growth is also I suspect caused partly by the drop in traffic this month – see below…

Traffic

Traffic is quite a bit lower this month and looking at the traffic sources shows a drop in both search engine traffic and referral traffic. Referral traffic is quite likely lower due to lack of new posts recently but I’m not sure about the search engine traffic. It could be related actually… Google favours busy sites with lots of fresh content so perhaps a lack of posts is lowering my rankings in Google. Of course it might also be something entirely out of my control, it’s difficult to tell.

Just out of interest, is the money you make through web hosts like Bluehost actually sticking? What I mean is that I made about $6k through Hostgator last month, but not everyone actually sticks it out and pays their monthly fee, which means my commissions drop.

Are these numbers before you actually get paid? (I’m not sure if Bluehost operate in a similar way to Hostgator)

Thanks for sharing the numbers again Caroline. For the traffic, I always check my biggest search traffic pullers and compare the results to the previous months. If I see a drop there, I analyze a bit further with webmaster tools and doing searches of my own to find the cause, e.g. if the page has dropped lower in search results and why. Anyway, for me it looks like your still doing great job, so good luck for the upcoming months.

I really wonder if working on this blog for an additional 2-5 hours per months would add a lot of benefits. I guess you could craft out 2-3 articles in that timespan and actually deliver something new while not killing yourself. I wonder if that would help you make more money, or if the income would be the same, and if you would earn more, how much per “hour” you’d make.

Congrats as always, Caroline.

If I posted only one “real” post in a month I’m sure I’d be down to 1000 visits. LOL—Staying at almost 20,000 in a slow month is pretty darn nice!

Hi Caroline, I’ve enjoyed the monthly earnings report, I have a small suggestion… just like you have the traffic numbers, and the RSS Subscription numbers chart. How about doing a chart for the progress of the monthly income? Similar to the one like the RSS Subscribers count, that would be really neat I think, and I don’t think it should take more than 5 minutes to make. Just a suggestion is all… by no means do you have to do it.

As far as the traffic, I am not sure either… I think being consistent and fresh with the posts helps, but I have seen websites that are not active still hold strong positions without fluctuating their traffic levels.

Hey Caroline,

Great to see that you are doing SO much better than when I first came across your blog back in November 2007 and you’d worked for 235 hours and had zero earnings to show for that effort.

Hope that the time you’re spending has decreased as your earnings have gone up too!

Just a note about your ’sleepy summer’ comment — Although I think that may be true in general for the business opportunity market, I think that you’ll find now that you’ve developed a loyal list of readers that may in fact NOT be the case for you.

I’ve personally found that right along with the post-Christmas ‘need to pay those bills’ rush that we all get in January, my webmaster’s blog does VERY well during the summer months when folks might be on vacation and have more time to investigate opportunities.

I’ll cross my fingers for you and hope that proves the case with your blog. :-)

Cheers,
Ros

Hi Caroline,

Holding strong and steady … that is good. Congratulations.

Caroline I’ve been hopping on to this blog since early this year, it was only today however, that I read your other “tabs” , particularly the “about” one. It is almost 6 months since I started my blog project and I was beginning to feel that I was just whistling Dixie (although I have made a few shekels from its efforts). I feel so much better as I see yet once again, that the money truck takes time to drive up to your driveway, and even the mini-tonka may not show up for the first 6 months!

You are an inspiration. Keep it up.

It’s impressive really !
Earn money with english blog is so easy when you compare to the french !

Here with 110.000 pages views/month and more than 40.000 visits/month it’s almost impossible to earn more than 150 US$ !!

Culbur, even in the French market you should be able to make that kind of money. The problem is that traffic alone doesn’t do it. You’ll have to know how to convert that traffic into money but luckily there are lots of ebooks covering that topic so you don’t have to “settle”.

Point number 1: Are you building an email list? If not, start there.

June 14, 2009

Hi, Caroline –

I just discovered your site yesterday, and I’ve been skipping all over the place, spending way more time than I have to spare at the moment because I just can’t stop reading!

I love your personal delivery style – it has a sort of “warm and fuzzy” feel to it, humble yet confident, with a healthy dose of reality for good measure. :)

You have tons of great info, and I look forward to all the reading that is still ahead. Meanwhile, I’m about to have a meltdown as I try to set up my own first-time blog, and even after reading your great site and scouring the Internet up and down, I still have some very important questions that I cannot find answers to, and I’m too embarrassed to put them out here in a public arena and confirm for the world to see just how completely clueless I am about all this. And yet I can’t get to the next step until I find the answers. Sometimes life is just so hard LOL.

I would happily pay you for 15 to 30 minutes of quality telephone time, if you are interested, or even private email if you prefer that route. After weeks of exhausting research, I am exasperated, and I have to get past this boulder in the road, or I will never get my blog out of the launching pad and get on with my life.

Keep up the good work – I will be back with more comments after I’ve had time to digest all of your wonderful musings and tutorials. You’re a godsend!

Karen :)

@Karen, hopefully by now you will have spotted the free Bloggers Bible email course that I run. However, having also seen your other comment on an older post, it doesn’t cover the technical aspects as much as you would like. If you go with WordPress it really is quite easy and my videos (which I think you have already seen) should cover the basics and at least get you started.

I’m afraid I don’t do any kind of private consultation work though, sorry :)

I think there is also a general downturn in traffic with both the annual summer slump and the recession.

@Mikael, yes I know and it’s not recovered grr. I’m hoping it goes back up to 10k before Wednesday when the next stats post is due lol :-)

@Chloe, time is a bit of a sore point really :-) I have absolutely no schedule whatsoever, especially at the moment I’m actually not working all that much so unfortunately no I don’t have any stats of that kind. However, I’ve never really worked full time, probably an average of 20 hours a week for the most part.

@ Caroline, I’ll cross my fingers for you. Publishing stats with a decline of 60% wouldn’t be fun.

@Chloe, I think the “time issue” also depends on how you work. If you’re being efficient and productive 20 hours can have achieve a lot, but if you’re like most that surf a little, chat a little, twit a little, check stats a little…. 20 hours can go by fast without having done any money making work.

June 29, 2009

@Caroline How do you get so much done in 20 hours a week. I work about that many hours too so that gives me some comfort that this working from home life is achievable part time! With so few hours though I find that if I read anything to improve my knowledge, I then try and implement what I learned and the week has gone – no time for content creation or anything else important. I’ve had to ration myself to 15 mins for e-mails, 15 mins for my RSS reader etc so I actually get a few hours a day to write posts and product reviews etc. I end up doing my reading in the evenings and trying to implement new things in the odd hour I can fit in at weekends!

@Mikael I was caught up in the “little bit of this and that” scenario but had to pull myself out of it a month or so ago. I’m a bit of an information addict though so it’s hard not to read everything there is out there to be read. I’ve come round to learning by doing more now though.
Chloe Alice Wilson´s last blog ..Ben 10 Toys – 10 Things Every Parent Needs To Know My ComLuv Profile

@Chloe, I’ve been there myself (and still am at times) so I know how it feels. Keeping the email and RSS reader off is definitely a good idea.

Besides that I have found that planning the day (often the day before) and using a timer clock has proven to increase my productivity. I guess I work best under pressure (the time pressure I setup).

@Mikael Thanks for your response. It’s good to know I’m not the only one struggling to fit everything in. I have also started planning my day, well week actually. I’ve allocated various tasks to each day of the week – check stats, write post, build links etc which seems to be working for now. I don’t have an actual alarm clock going off but am trying to be very strict to sticking to the timings. It’s very hard to stop though at the preallotted time, say when you haven’t finished all the info in your RSS reader don’t you find?
Chloe Alice Wilson´s last blog ..Ben 10 Toys – 10 Things Every Parent Needs To Know My ComLuv Profile

@ WooHoo Caroline… Your subscribers are back (just in time)!!

@ Chloe, for me it is a matter of getting used to working like this. When the alarm goes off I am done. That will keep me very effective when working.

It happens that I am not done with what I had planned but then I’ll just make adjustments to the plan. Nothing is all black and white.

As for the RSS feeds I have a very simple solution. When the time is up it just mark “all read”. That way I won’t get stressed the next day because I am behind.

Yes I’ll miss out on something but 99,999/100,000 times it is not anything that will revolutionize my business anyway ;)

I see that your earnings in earlier months were higher than now. Why is that? Are you posting less frequently, or is it just some Google issue with going down on search results and pagerank?
