Stats & Analysis for June 2009 – $1,062 Earned

July 2, 2009 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

Regular readers won’t have failed to notice that I haven’t posted a single entry during June aside from last month’s stats! I have an explanation for that later on in this post but thankfully the money keeps on rolling in regardless so here goes… :-)

Income

Total income earned during June 2009 – $1062.16

I was surprised to find that I hadn’t made any sales of Twitter Rockstar as I thought that was going to be a regular thing from the traffic that goes to the Twitter Guide every month. Oh well, you can never tell.

Subscribers

Big milestone this month – I have hit the 10k mark which is rather nice. I’ve pulled this diagram a day late so I’ll take the subscriber number from yesterday which is when I usually do it.

Subs at the end of May: 9,171

Subs at the end of June: 10,099

New subscribers in June ‘09 – 928

Last month I noticed that the growth had been lower than usual at just 344 and this month it has shot up to 928. This indicates that perhaps the numbers weren’t quite being reported correctly last month. You’ll see from the graph that Feedburner had a rather big glitch at the end of the month too.

Traffic

Traffic levels have taken a bit of a dive this month but I’m guessing that’s due to a natural summer slump as well as lack of new posts here. Much to be expected really.

Where Have I Been??

I’ve actually had people emailing this month just to check if I’m still alive :-) There are two reasons why I haven’t posted this month. The first is that my work now is entirely focused on my software project. I’m not doing any kind of marketing activities at all so I’m working on all technical programming related stuff and as this isn’t a development blog there’s simply not much to write about.

However the main reason is quite simply that I have done very little work at all of late! The reason I quit my day job back in September ‘07 is not just because I wanted to do my own thing but far more importantly because I wanted my freedom. I don’t like having to be at a certain place at a certain time. I don’t like having to call in sick or ask permission to take time off.

Over this last month here in the UK we have had the most gorgeous weather which is rare as usually it’s so unpredictable! Over the last few weeks in particular I’ve been having BBQ’s, going to the beach, snowboarding, picnics in the park, walking along piers, indoor skydiving, partying etc and have been having the time of my life! I do feel guilty that I’ve hardly done any work but you know what? I had a really crappy time for most of 2008 and it’s about time I had some fun so I decided to live now and work later :-)

However I am still working on the project, even though it’s doing my head in at the moment so I will write some updates if there are some non-techy developments to report!

900+ more subscribers and thousand bucks with one post ain’t that bad :) but seriously, nice to see you still posting this income report, as it’s interesting to see how things are going.

Speaking of the tech & programming you’re up to – You don’t have more techy blog do you? Would be interesting to hear more about that too.. anyway, good luck with the project.

@Zemalf, no this is the only blog I write now. A few people have asked me for a blog about the techy side of the software project but I just don’t want to invest the extra time :-)

@Caroline, again congrats on hitting the 10K. One question that you have probably been asked a million times (but I couldn’t find) but is this blog your only source of income?

The reason I ask is that I can see how you can survive in the UK for $1K.

Thank you again for the update.

@Mikael, yes it is. But I have savings from a house I sold last year that I use to top up the rest. I am very fortunate in that these savings will last many more years to come so I can afford the luxury of slacking off with work for a while :-)

@Caroline, now I jealous :) Then I fully understand that you take time off an enjoy the great weather (I’m in Denmark and it is definitely too hot to be working on anything :)

I think that it is a great idea to step away the blogs and the computer at times just to clear your head and have some fun. You still did terrific for the month.
But don’t give up blogging entirely, you give a lot of great advice to so many people.

How about a better work/life balance.

Caroline… have you thought of writing a post on project development? It doesn’t have to be ‘technical stuff’. I’m very curious and wanting to find out the challenges in putting together a software program. Are you writing the code by yourself or are you working with a team? Will you be releasing a beta version soon?

Cheers.

I’m jealous of your weather…it’s been nice out exactly 3 days in the last 6 weeks, and it has rained every day besides those 3. I don’t even bother with my garden; not even the weeds can keep themselves from drowning.

Congratulations on the 10k! I’m glad to hear that the past month has been put to good use.

Nice income. I wish I could make this income soon. I just started blogging since 3 months, and I’m already earning money, but that’s not enought to make a living yet. I’m very serious about making money online, as I am really interested in this subject. Nice blog anyway :) Too bad you don’t allow the use of gravatar though…

With all this traffic, you should earn way more than that.

Time to concentrate more on these two things: List + Backends

Thanks for sharing all this info. I expected that Twitter Rockstar would have been a bestseller… What re the reasons for such small sales number… I am asking because the product is goo and the subject is hot in this moment.

BTW, what about your email list. Any stats here?

@Chad:
I guess there are far enough free twitter resources available and most people use twitter as a toy, or hire someone to get it done for them. There is not such a big need for just “another” twitter guide. Especially when those guys already read the guide by caroline.

@Hubtonomy, LOL!! people often tell me I should work more but the way you put it really made me laugh! I have actually decided to do a little more now as the guilt is really starting to set in! :)

@Lei, actually I probably could write an update. I’m not sure how interesting it would be but it probably wouldn’t hurt. I’ll get something out this week.

@Jlbratten, I have no idea if I have bots. I’m not sure how to tell. The pattern of traffic seems fairly consistent so if there are bots I wouldn’t have thought it would be more or less than any other time so not something I need to worry about.

@Franck, I’ve had that advice many times but it’s not going to happen. The income from this blog is now purely passive and will remain so for the foreseeable future. 95% of my time is now invested on my software project.

@Chad, I really don’t know. If you look at the stats from a couple of months back when it was first added to the Twitter Guide, I made around $300 from it in one month so I was hoping that would have been a regular thing!

@smashill, I don’t think that’s the case as it sold before but not now. I wonder if it is because there was a time sensitive promotion going on at the launch.

Caroline,

I’m currently working on an updated version to Twitter Rockstar and creating a different layout. I suspect that with all of the recent Twitter courses being released (I was one of 5 or so on Clickbank when I launched, now there are dozens) and a lot of emphasis on getting a bazillion followers that people are just waiting before making a choice.

I’ll send you an email about some new promotions and such.

I’m impressed with the blog numbers, especially without a single post. Do you have an estimate date of completion for the software project?

Your big +928 is because in june, feedburner begin to count the people who follow you on Friendfeed like subscriber to your RSS (which is a stupid thing indeed). So in this 900+ new reader, almost 400 are from this social network ;)

Just curious as to why I dont see any Adsense income in your income stats. I am a new reader and couldnt find a post that addressed it. I was interested in your nichesites info using Wordpress which shows primarily setting them up for Adsense — Is this just income for this one blog that doesnt use Adsense and not for your nichesites combined?

@danh, I don’t show AdSense income because I don’t use AdSense :) I used to have a few niches sites but I closed that project last year to concentrate on other work so yes, the income shown here is generated just from this blog.

We look forward to seeing July stats… thanks for sharing, this is precious information to help everybody better understand IM…

@Estrazioni, yeah I would say it is in many cases and having your own products gives you other advantages to such as being able to offer them as bonuses in affiliate promotions for example.
