Stats & Analysis for July 2008 - $2,798 Earned

August 1, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

Every record has been broken this month. This is my highest ever earning month and I also hit 3,000 RSS subscribers though that did dip back below the threshold just as I did the stats (boooo!) :-) Also, I’ve been a busy bee. I have launched a new blog called Life Should Feel GOOD which is nothing to do with Internet marketing.

Please note that my income stats refer to all income that I generate online so if I make money from my new blog then that will be included but it will also be clearly indicated. However all other stats such as RSS and traffic stats are for this blog only. If you want to find out how my new blog does then sign up to my newsletter (top right corner of the page) as in that I’ll be explaining all the steps that I’ve taken to launch and develop it and so on.

Income

Total income earned during July 2008: $2,798.29

Sales for Traffic Rush were lower than I had hoped. The launch discount worked well but perhaps too well as I have had very few sales since then. However, most of those people that bought did so within the first couple of days of the launch so they had seen very little content at that time so I am assuming that they had already made the decision to buy beforehand. From now, the content of the lessons themselves have to do their work so I assume that most people won’t buy until they get to the end of lesson #10 and then make a decision as to whether or not to continue. That won’t happen until August 10th at the earliest.

Other income is pretty much the same as normal except that Blog Mastermind had a jump due to Yaro re-launching the program.

Newsletter Subscribers

I’ve had a nice round number jump this month. Last month ended on 257 subscribers and today there are 357. The growth is actually very slow. Everything I have read about email lists is that they should grow faster than the RSS subscription so obviously this has not been working for me. As a result of this I’ve decided to completely revamp the newsletter but I don’t expect signups to increase until I have the new opt-in box in place which will hopefully be ready soon.

July Newsletter Subscribers

RSS Subscribers

Last month I actually forgot to report the number I ended up with! Feedburner doesn’t allow you to go back and check numbers from the past but there is a cool tool called FeedCompare that does (and you can also compare yourself to other blogs, even if they don’t announce their numbers!) so using that, last month I ended up on 2,638 and today it sits at 2,982 which is a growth of 344 subscribers but that includes the 100 new newsletter subscribers.

This chart comes from FeedCompare, as its much better than the FeedBurner one:

Traffic Stats

July Traffic Overview

July Traffic Numbers

The traffic level has crept up a little bit this month which is nice to see. One thing I noticed is that somewhere along the way my PageRank has dropped to 4. I’m not sure if that happened this month or the one before but it doesn’t seem to have affected the level of search engine traffic. Even my Traffic Rush site has PR now, whoohoo. Mind you, that doesn’t have content so the only real traffic is direct traffic.

July Traffic Sources

The sources of traffic are still largely the same. Last month I forgot to investigate the traffic sources so I had a quick look back through June today to see if StumbleUpon was still the top traffic referrer and of course it was. Now onto July’s…

Referral Traffic Analysis

These are my top 10 referrers of traffic during July:

  1. StumbleUpon - 1,962
  2. Twitter - 463
  3. The Warrior Forum - 335
  4. ShoeMoney - 221
  5. 45n5 - 207
  6. Traffic Rush - 196
  7. Courtney Tuttle - 123
  8. Delicious - 106
  9. Thirty Day Challenge - 91
  10. Mixx - 62

A few points here. Firstly Twitter - I still see people whining about Twitter, how pointless it is, how it doesn’t generate traffic and so on. I checked back through the last few months stats and it consistently sends me several hundred visitors per month and the thing is - these are highly targeted visitors. I might write a blog post about this as I have some thoughts on it.

Secondly, I am still boggled by some of the referral sources here. The Warrior forum, ShoeMoney, Courtney - all these sources were published months and months ago and yet they still continue to drive traffic.

Keyword Analysis

I haven’t done any keyword analysis in a while. To be perfectly honest, I am not all that interested. I know many of you will throw your hands up in horror but I don’t do SEO, I just write what comes into my head. Even on the occasions when I do look at my keyword stats I just kinda ignore it. I’ll let the SEO’s worry about SEO, and in the meantime I’ll just stick to what I’m good at.

I did start to have a poke through the keywords but the other thing I notice is that the vast majority of keyword phrases have had just 1 search or a couple. There were almost 3,500 different keywords that brought me traffic this month and almost 3,000 of them were unique!

Most Popular Posts

This is another stat that I haven’t looked at in a while. I didn’t really want to look at it until recently because I felt that while I was going through lots of personal stuff I just wasn’t writing very well. I notice that my writing style has changed quite a lot recently. I used to do a lot of tutorial style posts and now I don’t do so many of those and tend to write more about my opinion on stuff. But the blog seems to be growing faster these days than it used to so I guess that is working.

My WordPress Ebook and Twitter Guide are always the top #1 and #2 spots consistently month after month so I’ll ignore those. These are the top 5 actual blog posts for July:

The first post on that list was written in November 2007! Once again, another example of the power of blogs to continue to drive traffic for a very, very long time.

Conclusion

All of July was dominated with the release of Traffic Rush and that has affected both the content I released on the blog and of course the income. August will be a strange one because Traffic Rush will be mostly forgotten and the whole month will be dominated by niche sites! First of all the Thirty Day Challenge 2008 kicks off today. If you haven’t signed up yet then check out my review of it to find out more about it. Secondly, I have been collecting various resources to do with niche sites in general and I am going to put all of that into practice whilst I work on the challenge.

That will be my work focus during August and of course I will be blogging about what I’m doing and learning. Oh and in case you hadn’t noticed, I have created a video version of my WordPress ebook. There are 10 videos in all and these will be released one per day in between other posts so check those out if you haven’t already.

Well, it looks like you get most of your money by teaching people how to use several online services. Keep working on it because you seem to be good at this.

Stumbleupon obviously dominated everything else.your program you did with the obviously showed that people were very interested in how to use it. I do use stumbleupon quite often and has given me quite a bit of traffic. This is obviously a no-brainer for anyone that wants to get traffic to their blog.

Matt Cutts mentioned on his blog a couple of weeks ago they were pushing out an update to toolbar PR. I think they basically dropped everyone by one, so relatively, nothing changed.

Great stats post! I miss the funny keywords you used to post.
Anyway, I think that those 3,000 “long-tail” keywords probably led to drive-by traffic, when they didn’t find what they wanted.

Since I have the term Designs in my blog, I get a lot of one-off search traffic for specific items, like “old pizza building designs.” I happened to mention pizzerias in one post and - there ya go!

Bottom line, I agree that studying the keywords should not be a major part of your efforts. You’re probably moving into to viral territory now, anyway.

Cheers,

Mitch

Well, I am horrified that you do not look at your organic traffic. OK, I am not horrified — I am just kidding.

But, since you do not look at it, I feel compelled to let you know that you are still holding the #1 spot in google for mating habits of the favicon.

I am still working on a monetization strategy for that. :)

Nice job in July. Best of luck for an even better August.

Hi Caroline! I had a few suggestions and questions.

Have you thought of adding an incentive to get further sign ups of Blog Mastermind. I saw Darren offering a free hour of his time. I was thinking, you could offer the full stumblerush course to the new and existing sign ups. Of course, they would have to wait til the money back guarantee was over.

I was wonder what your future plans for monetization are. It looks like videos would be a major part of the blog which is great! Have you considered using either viddler or revver? I cant remember which, but one of them offers a revenue sharing option with those that share your video. It could be an incentive for readers to promote your stuff.

Would you be using video for your new site? I was thinking that could really add a personal touch, especially if the information complimented the blog post.

I was also thinking that updating your about page to include your new projects could possible result in more sales - mentioned the videos and stumblerush course.

:) Congratulations on this month. it will be interesting to see what happens from now!

Another idea:

Have you gotten many reviews of the stumblerush course? You could do what Yaro has done in the past and dedicated a post to all the reviews for those that are still undecided.

Wow! $2.7k is a lot of money! Congrats Caroline!

Any tips for noobies like me? LOL

@Mistic, it’s a tiny amount considering the time and effort that went into it. If I translated that into a dollar amount per hour it would be pretty low! However, I’m sure it will continue to generate revenue for some time.

@Mitch, ahh yeah I could do those again but these days I get so much more SE traffic that it takes an age to go through them all!

@Mark, lol well I’m not expecting much competition for that particular term!

@Jade, yes I did consider that but SR is pretty cheap so it didn’t seem like a very good incentive for a $97 a month program. For the moment future plans for making money are going to be niche sites. And no it is very unlikely that there would be video on those sites - they are entirely different beasts to the kind of social blog that I am building here. I wouldn’t even use my name on those. And yes I have got several testimonials and uploaded a page on the SR site.

@Desmond, yeah - never give up.

Awsome!

Good job on SR!

About keyword analysis and SEO? SEO is about to write GOOD CONTENT! on-site. The “off-site” I think You don’t need to focus on, it’s “done naturally anyway” wich ALWAYS is the best and most natural thing for a website.

You could focus on getting a little better subject line, once in a while, stuff the subject with an important keyword for Your targeted niche.

P.S … thanks for the tip about eBay and buying PLF! it worked perfectlly and I’m now an owner of PLF 1.0 for 400 bucks :o

Sorry, forgot one thing.

I think You will get more leverage from SR when You accept Affiliates, depending on precentage earned by the affiliates. Then it will go MORE viral.

A good thing to start Your affiliate-network is to let thoose that have bought the SR be the first to be able to sign up as Affiliates, and then after a while create a new “momentum” by allowing everyone to become an affiliate

Just my $0.02

@Patrik, yeah depending on the topic, if I am writing something that I know has keywords in it then I will do a teensy bit of SEO and twiddle with the title a little. SR now has the affiliate program in place.

I have to say that it is really good of you to show such detailed stats about how much you make, your incoming traffic and so on. Not too many would do this sort of thing but I really think it is extremely helpful to see.

I have just totally rehauled my blog. Deleted every single post and comment and moved to Wordpress so I am looking for a fresh start. I make money from other websites I have but the money making theme really interests me and I love writing about it so I would like to see my affiliate blog really do well. So seeing these stats really helps me to clarify a few things. Thanks

@Michael, note that a LARGE percentage of my income does NOT come directly from the traffic to this blog! I have created products (an ebook and a course) that provide most of the income and then launched them from the blog. The traffic actually means very little. Trying to directly monetize raw traffic often yeild poor results.

Hi Caroline.

Congratulations on breaking many records last month! I bought your advanced StumbleRush in the first few days. I just knew it’d be good and the discount was a good incentive.

Question: you mentioned above that you had an increase of 344 subscribers last month and that 100 of these included newsletter subscribers. Wouldn’t the 100 newsletter guys be potentially different from the RSS subscribers?

@Stan, a while ago Feedburner and AWeber integrated to allow the number of subscribers to an AWeber list be counted in a Feedburner feed and that is what I do here so the RSS count you see also includes the newsletter subscribers. Good for social proof :)

Your numbers for this month are awesome. Thanks for outlining how you did this. By the way, is this the plan you had in mind when you quit your job last year or was this something that evolved from trial and error?

@Sharon, I never had a plan when I quit my job! It has all evolved along the way and it will continue to do so. I have now abandoned plans for all but the most immediate future. I have plans for the next few projects covering the next few months only, that’s all!
