Stats & Analysis for February ‘08 - $2003 Earned!

March 1, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

I’ve been itching to do this post! All this month I have seen emails coming into my inbox almost every day telling me that I’ve made money! It’s a lovely feeling and I have a taste for it now. When you start to make money it changes your mindset because you start believing that it is possible. It’s early, my RSS stats have not updated for the day yet so I’m going to start out with the money today!

Income

Total Income Earned February 2008: $2003.87

It’s funny but just a few days into the month I was continuing to see BlueHost sale notifications come in almost daily and I got it into my head that I was going to hit $2k this month. All through the month I fixated on the idea that I could earn that amount and the results speak for themselves. Actually it could be a little higher than that - I was unable to login to Blog Mastermind to check my stats and there might be some recurring commissions in there to add in.

One thing I need to point out is that this is the total amount of income earned across all of my money making projects. That includes this blog, my WordPress ebook and my niche site. I plug the BlueHost package both in the ebook and using a banner on this blog. Their affiliate statistics are only allowing me to see details of the last two weeks which is annoying as I use different tracking ID’s so I can see where people are signing up from. However I know that the majority of the sales have come from the ebook.

One thing that I found very interesting is that I made $285 with Teaching Sells last month and I can only assume that came from the ad in my sidebar. This month I changed the graphic to an animated GIF and didn’t make any sales at all. I have no idea where that single dollar came from! I think I’ll change the graphic back and see if that makes a difference.

Blog Stats

RSS Subscribers

rss subscribers

FeedBurner has been playing up a lot this month - all those odd dips are errors in the way FeedBurner has been collecting and reporting stats. However, it’s working today so I can still get the stats for the month so that’s ok. I ended January on 1389 subscribers and today I have 1593 giving me a growth of 204 new subscribers.

There’s quite a lot of interesting things to note about this months stats. Firstly it has grown - it always does. Each and every month my subscribers grow and that is a wonderful thing. It allows me to project forward into the longer term and envision a time when I could possibly have many thousands of subscribers and think about what that would mean. Secondly, the growth has been significantly slower this month and that’s not so good. I have some thoughts as to why that might be that I am going to publish in a separate post next week.

Lastly I was hoping to end the month over 1600 as I hit that number a few days ago. The graph there shows that on my highest day I had 1652 subscribers but if you look closely you’ll see that there has been a steady decline over the last 5 days. What have I done in the last 5 days? Promoted an AdSense coaching program. This makes me think that sales pitch type posts turn off blog readers.

That’s an interesting dilemma because a large chunk of the income earned from a blog like this is from the affiliate programs promoted within it. My conclusion is that the promotional posts need to stay but that I need to make extra effort to be providing useful content as well. When I look back at what I have posted this week I can honestly say that I don’t think I have written anything genuinely useful - not something that somebody would want to link to, or Stumble etc. See, this is why stats analysis is good - it highlights your flaws and teaches you lessons to learn from!

Traffic Stats

traffic overview

Hmm very interesting. First of all that lovely dip that occurred about two thirds into the month was caused by my blog being down for almost two days. What I find most interesting about this graph is that there are no significant peaks. What does this mean? That I haven’t written any outstanding content that has brought in a flood of traffic that’s what! More harsh lessons from my stats this month.

However the good news is that the overall level of traffic is about the same as last month despite the lack of peaks - I am now receiving an average of between 500 and 1000 page views per day and this is pretty good. Here’s the numbers:

traffic numbers

Traffic Sources

traffic sources

This may look similar to last month but there are some differences. This month I received 3,143 visitors from search engines compared to 2,570 last month. That’s a nice boost and I’m seeing that upward trend every month. This is a good thing. Direct Traffic was virtually the same and I imagine a lot of that is people clicking through here from my ebook.

What is not so good is that that referring traffic is down from 15k to 13k. This is as a result of several factors - people not linking to me, my pages not getting stumbled as much and so on. These figures paint the same picture as I have seen elsewhere - this month I have not delivered enough good quality content on this blog and the results really show it!

Keywords

Last month I was shocked to find that 327 visitors came from a search on my name. It was 548 this month! Another one of my high count keywords this month is “wordpress niche site”. When I type that phrase into Google, in the UK results my ebook page comes up as the top result, and fifth in the US results. I’m also seeing lots of other WordPress related keywords in there. It just goes to show that when you continually blog on a subject you will eventually start ranking in the search engines for related terms.

I had two visitors from the search term “make money online”. This is probably the most competitive term in the IM niche. What I found especially interesting about this is that when I did a search I found that I ranked somewhere between 900 and 1000 of that term! That means that two people looked through over 900 search results to find me! Wow…

There weren’t many funny ones this month, well a couple… “big juicy wobbly tits” and “give me your dirty love video”! Well, not a lot I can say to those really!

Referral Traffic Breakdown

Here are my top 10 referrers excluding Google obvious blog readers:

  1. StumbleUpon (4,137)
  2. 45n5 (286)
  3. Shoemoney (278)
  4. Twitter (262)
  5. Delicious (197)
  6. Yaro Starak (193)
  7. Dosh Dosh (185)
  8. Lifehacker (179)
  9. Design Shack (176)
  10. Chris Garrett (162)

Most of this traffic is coming to content written a long time ago. A lot of the stumble traffic came into older posts, the traffic from Shoemoney, Delicious, Lifehacker is all to content written before February. This is good and bad. It goes to show that once a blog reaches a certain stage that traffic can continue to come in for a long time and this can sustain a blog during a rough period for a while. What it also shows me is that the content I have produced this month isn’t as good as my previous content. That’s about the third clear sign from this months stats.

There’s another interesting referrer that sent me 171 visitors this month: caroline-middlebrook.com! What, that’s myself isn’t it? Not quite - see that is my root domain but this blog is hosted in the /blog/ directory. However people will often erroneously link to me at my main domain instead of the proper blog address. At the moment I have a large graphic showing my old blog theme with a link to this blog on there. I’ve played around with redirects before but that caused some problems. One day I’ll do something better with the root of this domain!

Summary

Financially I’ve had an awesome month - I actually earned enough money for me to live on this month. From a blogging point of view I cannot complain because I’m still seeing plenty of traffic and continued growth but there overall theme that my stats are telling me is that I can do better. Let’s see what March will bring…

Hey Caroline those are fabulous figures! I’ve just been doing my own stats and whilst mine are tiny in comparison, I have hit the targets I set for myself back at the beginning of February (ie to double my income and double my traffic). This was also my goal in January and I hit that too. I’m now setting my March targets :-) Whilst financially I’m a long way from where you are, I am feeling the excitement!

Among other money making blogs I know of, your blog shows a different earning pattern. While most are earning from Adsense, it’s just a small pie here. SO there are better avenues than Adsense… I have long way in learning!

Caroline,

Congratulations on the growth of your blog. It is nice to see your progress each month. It proves that hard work and determination will pay off in the long run.

I am hoping to build my blog to a point that it earns enough to pay for the hosting plus a vacation for my wife and I. I have received lots of good information from your blog that I hope will help me towards that goal.

Keep up the good work, I see nothing but a positive result.

If u learn from (the late) Corey Rudl, focus on the most thing that bring income. What happened to Corey, out of tens of topics in his ebook, buyers are only interested in 1 topic (tips for buying a new car). Since then, he dropped all other useless topics and focus on that one instead.

Caroline, I do want to congratulate you again for making it big. You deserve all of this and you will inspire all of us and many more to come :)

As for getting SPIKES in your traffic, you should take my advice and give Entrecard a try. There’s a small group/team of Stumblers that boosts hundreds of guaranteed stumbles just like that. It’s no DIGG, but it’ll surely do a bit of a spike :)

@Bhumika, oh gosh yes there are so many ways to earn money online - never rely on just one method.

@Bruce, at the top of the blog there is a page called ‘My Projects’ - click on that, then click the ebook project. In there I have collected together all the posts I made about the ebook and how I launched and marketed it. Read through those.

@Eiffel, while that’s good advice, I’m not yet in a position to make that decision because there are so many things I still need to try. Perhaps I can start thinking that way in a year or so.

@Mike, hmm I’m totally against organised stumbling or digging or whatever! I didn’t like entrecard - just another way for people to spam blogs, not for me at all.

Great stuff Caroline. The figures go to show that a bit of hard work and dedication always pays off in the end. I’m sure by you posting your results like this, it gives a lot of people, me included, the inspiration to carry on working hard at our own niche sites/blogs. Thanks :)

Great going Caroline :) I hope you continue to reach milestones. By the way, I think it was much better that you offered your ebook for free. Makes me think that sometimes it’s better to offer a free ebook embedded with affiliate URLs rather than a paid ebook.

Not only you got links for the ebook but also some nice amount of money…

“This is probably the most competitive term in the IM niche.”

Actually the phrase “Internet Marketing” itself is the most competitive one in the IM niche.

@Ruchir, the free v paid ebook is an ongoing debate. If I get another idea for a topic I’d like to write a paid one and then compare the results. And yes i forgot about the “internet marketing” phrase heh.

@TJ, I ask myself that question all the time! I really wish I had just hosted the blog at the root domain. I think its because I imagined that in time I’d have lots of things I wanted to put on a website and not just the blog - I may still do at some point in the future I suppose.

To answer your second question - no secret. Write an ebook, insert affiliate links, release the ebook free, promote the heck out of it. Check through the archives of my ebook project if you’ve missed those posts.

Hi Caroline,
You wrote:
” That means that two people looked through over 900 search results to find me!”

I had similar data from my site, and I think this theory is not correct.
I think it depends on Google, differend Google Centers and they update.
In this moment YOU war searching for this term:
“make money online”
you finded your site on 900 position. but probably people who was searching for “make money online” get another resoults as you on google.

01. Dearly Beloved Caroline:
02. Greetings!
03. It seems my commenting here is almost becoming monthly but I read your every post because I have it in my bookmarks for daily routine though I do not do it daily really (pardon me for that :-)
04. There is something unique about you, do you know what it is?
05. STEP BY STEP PROCESS TO THE TOP!
06. And like you said the other day, it seems there is no limit really. You have just mentioned email list creation which is a wise step to take and also you mentioned creating some Google Adwords campaigns the other day, that will be another wise step but consider the many Cost Per Action (CPA) options you have that will make a lot of difference to your income base. I know you have knowledge on many of what I may mention here already so just explore them one after the other as you have time to work it. Many of them are quiet income that no one even need to know about. You set it up, monitor it and earn income directly to your accounts. No questions asked.
07. Keep up the good work and CONGRATULATIONS once again.
08. Of course you know what I am going to say next because you thaw it coming… (Ice Age 1 and 2 - They thaw it coming and the meltdown…) But you thaw it coming…
09. YOU CAN DO BETTER!
10. There you have it. I said you thaw it coming…
11. Hope you do not mind my always coming to drop my two (2) cents. Add it to the income. :-)
12. Remain blessed and a blessing and we shall communicate again soon if God is willing!
13. Regards,
14. Olakunle Solomon Fatoye.
15. God Bless You Real Good For All You Do. Really Respect Your Work.
16. Just a question, I want to believe that you have a sure backup for all your work here because this is huge service to humanity and should be kept safe for all time.

@Olakunle, to question 4 - I don’t think I do anything truly unique here, I think anybody else could do the same thing and I hope to be able to prove that one day. To question 16, yep it’s backed up daily. Thanks for your 2c as always :)

Ahh. It’s inspiring to know that it’s possible to make thousands of dollars per month instead of our current $40 per month. Bravo.

How are you backing up your site daily? With a cron job, or are you going in there yourself to do it manually?

I’ve found a few WP plugins that I never really liked. Lately, I’ve been using BlueHost’s complete backup, but I’m always a bit nervous about a total catastrophy and trying to recreate everything from scratch - blog, email addresses, .htaccess and 301 redirects. Any thoughts?

@Webdiggin, funny you should ask about backups. I currently use a plugin that emails me my wordpress database everyday but it stopped working a few days ago and I’ve not been able to fix it. I’ll be looking for a new solution next week.

I am surprised to see that StumbleUpon has given you, Caroline, a decent amount of traffic. All my blogs have been nurtured by Google’s kindness. For now, search result is supreme. I have stopped stumbling lately.
