Stats & Analysis for December ‘08 – $1,498 Earned

January 1, 2009 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

Wow, another year is over. It’s not been a particularly fun year for me and I’m glad it’s over! Onwards to 2009…

Income

Total Income Earned in December 2008 – $1498.57

Looks like I released the Bloggers Bible just in time to make up for a drop in other affiliate sales :-) Now that I have wrapped up all my projects of 2008, my work will now be focusing on the Software Project which will not be able to generate an income for quite some time – I estimate around 6 months so I wouldn’t be surprised if my income steadily drops over the next few months as I won’t be doing any direct income-producing activities.

However, now that the Bloggers Bible is finished, there are actually a few one-off promotional opportunities that I can use. Another affiliate will be promoting it with an exclusive discount in January, and I also plan to do things like a Warrior Special Offer at some point. I’ll blog about those things when they happen.

Subscribers

Subs at end of November: 4,205

Subs at end of December: 5,270

I had quite a large growth in subscribers to the Bloggers Bible email list earlier in the month when Dan Raine promoted it to his Twitter following. I have changed the delay on the popup again. I had increased it to 10 seconds and that seemed to make it worse so I have put it back to 5 which works best. I will stop fiddling with it now.

Total new subscribers in December:1,065

Traffic

There has been a slight increase in traffic this month which was partly caused by Dan Raine’s promotion which sent nearly 700 visitors. I have also started to participate a bit in the Warrior Forum which has sent a surprising number of visitors considering that the only links are just in my signature. I first joined that forum over a year ago but back then I couldn’t really participate very much and I used to spend so much time reading blogs that I didn’t have time for forums.

It’s a little different now. I only read a handful of blogs which don’t take long to read and I rarely spend time on social media. The visitors of the Warrior Forum are more likely to be potential customers of my future software than any social media traffic so that is a better use of my time.

Inbound Links

Last month I said that I wanted to start tracking external links as I have now hired somebody to do some manual link building for me. The trouble is that I am having difficulty in tracking them accurately. I am using Google Webmaster Tools and last month ended showing a total of 9,735 links but today it is showing me only 7,401. Somehow I doubt that I have lost over 2000 links in one month so once again I am at a loss as to how to track this data properly.

Total External Links:7,401 ??

Funny Keywords

There were a few more that were um, ‘odd’ but a bit too rude to post!

  • fat people eurgh
  • how to make millions and make your girl happy
  • how you can become a mastermind at ants
  • kitties puke on everything you love cross stitch
  • oops de school girls
  • use playdough to copy a key

Conclusion

I had actually written a post yesterday about 2009 goals and such but I forgot to press the publish button doh! However it was only a short post really as I have already talked about my plans for 2009. I have now wrapped up all the various projects that I have been working on during 2008 and I am ready to get started properly on my new Software project now.

It would be fabulous if you could also do yearly income reports. I know the data is in the individual posts, but it would be fascinating seeing the blogger themselves compare the months and find patterns, rather than drawing your own conclusions:)

What is really fascinating is that the zen to done e-book is still bringing in steady income – however small. Would this be through search engine traffic, or people going through your archives?

I’ll be very interested in next months report to see how the massive increase in mailing list subscribers is affecting your affiliate income.

@Leslie, it’s too early to tell right now.

@Jade, I don’t think a yearly income report would be useful on such a new blog.

@Mike, the AdSense income comes from 2 niche sites that have around 20 visitors per day, the traffic mentioned here is for this blog which gets around 500 visitors a day.

@David, I need an income of around $5,000 a month to determine that I am making a ‘full-time’ income. I have goals but I don’t assign time-scales to them so there’s not much point writing about them.

Your honesty in numbers is always refreshing. Also let’s us, your readers, know you have been where we are and you know the trials and tribulations of beginning bloggers.

Throwing out a possible drop in links is your change from reading blogs to posting in forums. Being a top commenter at some sites could count for quite a few links. Stop commenting and fall out, that would be significant drop as most top commenter’s lists are on every page.

@Mikael, I’m hoping they’ll increase income a little, but things like AdSense etc usually don’t bring in the kind of income that affiliate marketing brings in so I doubt it will make up for it.

@Franck, I don’t promote Aweber, I might drop the odd link but that’s all. There is a lesson in Bloggers Bible that promotes it but that’s late in the course and none of my subscribers are anywhere near it yet.

@Mikael, check out my ebook & video series on creating niche sites with WordPress – that has created almost all of my BlueHost income for the last year.

@BusinessX, no I stopped actively commenting on blogs well over 6 months ago and I only started tracking links last month so that’s not it. I highly doubt over 2,000 links have actually disappeared – it has to be a reporting problem.

@Ari, I have never heard of dnscoop, what is that?

Mikael Rieck
January 6, 2009

Caroline, depending on how you do it Adsense can bring in a lot of money. Online problem is that this niche is hard when you want people to click. Especially because your traffic is return visitors. There are tons on money to be made in the MMO niche through Adsense but you’re blog is not structured for that.

As for your tutorials I know that you have already made some and that they brought in your BlueHost income but what I was talking about was NEW tutorials (I’m sorry I didn’t state that in the comment).

@Mikael, yes exactly. My main aim here is to get subscribers both to my RSS feed and to my email lists. Income from on-page monetization would only ever be secondary.

@Ari, ahh I see, thanks for the clarification. I am using Google Webmaster Tools to track backlinks. There is also Yahoo SIte Explorer but that is just as erratic.

@Melvin, heh well things like the ‘cat puking’ I have mentioned before in a post about pointless blog posts and there are other odd words that I have dropped in here and there and that’s how they get in there! Plus I repeat them in these posts which then increases their authority!

@Valentina, well thanks fo your friend |:-) Don’t be scared though, the worst that can happen is that you take ages to make an income like I did heh. Just persist and you’ll be fine.

1. Dearly Beloved Caroline:
2. Greetings and so lovely to communicate you once more this season.
3. Compliments of the season and wishing you a very happy new year 2009!
4. Has been a great and lovely journey and though you have not reached your goals of thousands of pounds per month yet, the journey has been exciting and enjoyable I believe.
5. So, at this junction, I believe you have done an excellent work discovering and being discovered and all I can add is “God Speed!” for the remaining part of the journey as you continue with it this year and beyond.
6. It is also my prayer for you that you will surely exceed your expectations this year and go on to become the amazing success I see ahead of you someday soon.
7. The reason I have put those words that way is because, I believe I have made a little effort to keep up with your progress here and learned a lot of things while listening to you via your writings and hope was a bit of help in one way or the other with my little contributions but as all things in life, there is always a moving on season…
8. In other words, as much as I will continue to read your blog from time to time and also continue to enjoy your electronic mailings, I feel it is important to mention that I may not be saying much in the coming months.
9. Know that I am by no means bounded to let you know this but I just feel to say it as I can confirm to you that out of a handful of places I leave my thoughts, your blog always qualify due to the volume of work you put in and the quality of resources you put out. Most especially your sincerity.
10. Just another phrase to share – “Keep up the good and great work!”. :-)
11. In all honesty, I will be more satisfied when I see your face on a platform where the top 10 high performers on the Internet is shown.
12. So, on this note, once again, I wish you the best of 2009 and beyond.
13. Now remember, if wishes were horses, beggars will ride so we both need to get back to “WORK”, taking massive action to see massive results as we have wished.
14. Remain blessed and a blessing with God speed and we shall communicate again soon if God is willing!
15. Regards,
16. Olakunle Solomon Fatoye.

@Reyn, don’t pay too much attention to the Alexa ranking – it’s very poor. It ranks the same as other blogs that get very different traffic numbers. If you want to see my stats check my monthly stat posts I do on the 1st of each month.

Ari Lestariono
January 10, 2009

@Caroline, that’s puzzle me Alexa Rank by other Internet Marketer or top advertizer is the parameter to evaluate your site/blog whether your qualified or not to put banner etc, yet on the other hand it can’t be accurate to recap the traffic as well.

Ari Lestarionos last blog post..New Year’s Resolution: Best Natural Foods for Longevity

Liz Jamieson
January 10, 2009

Ari – Alexa rankings can be manipulated. Plus, not everyone has the Alexa toolbar or widget attached to their browser. Technical people tend to, but others are less likely to. This means you can get some popular sites that have a fairly low (as in a high number) Alexa rating because their target market is one that isn’t generally using the Alexa toolbar. Proper stats are the only real indicators of popularity.
