R.I.P. Treacle (My Cat)

April 7, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

On Saturday morning I had the unfortunate task of having my cat Treacle put down. She had cancer and it had spread to her lungs and was causing lots of problems. I first found the lump a few months ago and took her to the vet but at the time they said that it was harmless. They were wrong.

Last week she went completely off her food and started vomiting a lot. She was taken to the vet on Thursday and she was very weak and had difficulty breathing. They discovered that she was also bleeding a lot. She was kept in, put on a drip and given a blood test. The test revealed that she had a nasty infection but they were not yet sure why she couldn’t breathe and was so weak.

So the next day she was given an x-ray which revealed that she did in fact have cancer which had spread severely throughout her lungs. All of her problems were due to this and they told me that there would be nothing they could do other than make her more comfortable.

At the age of 15 I felt it was kindest to have her put down. It was horrible. I’ve had cats all my life so some have died and some have also gone missing but this is the first time I was actually there when it happened. I’m trying not to be too upset about it though as she had a long life, I was at home with her for about half of it and I have hundreds of photos to remember her by. Here are a few of them:

I’m so sorry Caroline. I know exactly how close one can become to an animal. My mother has 3 dashunds that are her kids. She recently had to put the oldest down due to illness and unability to move. She was 17.

Caroline, so sorry to hear about losing Treacle. I lost one of my two last January and I (and her brother) still miss Zanda, Princess of Cats. Your Treacle looks very like my remaining cat Spartan.

I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Rainbow bridge poem? Soppy, but it makes me bawl every time. Here:

There are a number of cat and dog people I hope to see again over the rainbow bridge.

Hi Caroline, Just had to comment. Your cat was beautiful…love the photos. She looks a lot like my cat Buddy .. whom I had to have put down a few years ago.

It’s okay to let yourself be sad for the loss of your friend. They become such a big part of your life it’s hard to let go. You were blessed to have her around for so long. I am sure you have lots of wonderful, loving memories to keep her alive and with you.

I totally understand your loss and my thoughts and best wishes are with you.

I feel so sorry for you. What a beautiful cat she was. Of course 15 years is quite a long life, but I know how hard it is to let a pet go - they are family members.
I lost one of my dogs about 1,5 years ago of cancer, too. He was only 6 years old. So I know very well how painful this can be.

But when we take a pet into our lives it comes with the promise we make not to let them suffer. Even if we will be in pain for quite a while.

Try to enjoy all the good memories that will stay with you forever.

All my good thoughts are with you during these hard times.
Hugs

Wow Caroline, I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. Treacle was such a cutie, great pics!

Our sincerest sympathies, Caroline. What a beautiful cat and a long life. It’s about quality of life. We’ve been there. It’s never easy.

Treasure the memories and know she’s healthy, romping around, and probably smiling at your blog. The Rainbow Bridge poem has brought comfort to so many, as Kevin mentioned…

Caroline, you have my heartfelt sympathies. Treacle was a beautiful girl! Just think how lucky you were to have shared so much time with her. I was lucky enough to have Monkey in my life for 23 years and Brewster for 18, so I know how you are feeling. May your memories and these wonderful photos bring you some comfort and joy. It is so hard to lose a family member and any animal lover will tell you that their pet is a member of the family.

My husband and I were recently up at Best Friends Animal Society for a dedication ceremony for an area in Angel’s Rest (their animal cemetery), for the cats from the Great Kitty Rescue at Pahrump and the feeling was that when the chimes rang, it was the voice of the departed animals calling to us from the rainbow bridge letting us know that everything was alright. May you too hear the chimes ringing for Treacle.

So sorry for the loss of your sweet and lovely cat. Treacle is such a perfect name for a sweetie.

Over the years my cats have been some of my dearest friends and it has always been so hard to say goodbye when the time has come. I know it is especially hard to be right there when they pass but sometimes it is the best thing.

Thank you for sharing your pictures. Looking at her it is easy to see how much you treasured her and how happy she was right up to the end.

I hope your happy memories and the good wishes of your friends will be a comfort to you now. God bless you.

Caroline,
Sorry to read the news of losing your dear feline friend ‘Treacle’, and thanks for the fine photos. The cat-nip one is a real classic. :)

I’ve lost more than one pet cat to cancer myself, and though fifteen years is an excellent lifespan for a cat, it doesn’t make the last goodbye less difficult.

With sympathy,

Caroline,

Losing a best friend is tough. I’m very sorry to hear about your loss.

Not too long ago I was forced to make a similar decision with my best friend Bear. I had him for 17 years and I actually saved him as a puppy.

He was a stray and he was found in downtown Baltimore. Bear was with me for so many years that I actually relied on him through thick and thin. We had been through so much together. I miss him!

He was a good dog and a good friend. Our lives are better for having these companions.

Caroline,

Thoughts are with you. I’m sorry for your loss. Losing such a special pet (and friend) is a difficult thing that there just aren’t words for.

We recently went through this too. We lost our 7 year old dog in early March (we had to have him put down as his health was failing too) and then a couple weeks later at the end of March, our 17 year old cat passed away suddenly.

Know that your beloved friend is off in the Summerland having a grand time, healthy and whole. And of course, her spirit will live on for you through your wonderful memories and pictures.

Dear Caroline,

As a fellow cat lover, I deeply sympathize with your loss. I’ve had to make the “is now the time?” decision more times than I care to remember.

I used to believe that having to euthanize your animal is the hardest thing in the world. After one experience when I waited too long (trying more treatments - hoping against hope), I learned that there is one thing worse than having to euthanize: waiting too long and knowing that your animal suffered at the end.

Right now I have a 17 year old cat who is declining, so I will be facing this decision again soon. Of course, the difficult thing is knowing when. But I hope that if I err it will be on the side of “a bit sooner than necessary” than “a little too late”.

You did the compassionate thing. She had a good long life, and I’m sure lots of love.

They are so precious, aren’t they - our wonderful animal companions.

My condolences. I cannot imagine what I would do if I was put in that situation with my kitty Haley. I wish you the best in your time of healing.

Ah bless! She looks the spit of the studio cat my producer had called Wurlitzer. Wurlitzer had one day decided that my producer was his new owner and never left! Wurlitzer would come in as we were recording and if she didn’t approve of the results she would leave in disgust!

We once had an ‘orrible AnR woman from LA come to London to hear where we had got to with the album, and she shrieked loudly in objection to Wurlitzer’s sudden appearance to judge the songs with her. Following that none of us liked the old cow and ignored her as she obviously had no judgement worth listening to! RIP Wurlitzer (who (unlike the ho from LA was credited on that album) RIP Treacle.
