Make Money Blogging Using Conversion Blogging

July 23, 2008 Posted under: Blogging by Caroline Middlebrook

Blog Mastermind Opens Its Doors Again Soon

Blog Mastermind is a training course designed to teach you how to develop a blog that earns a full-time income on two hours work per day. The course author Yaro Starak now earns over $10,000 a month from his blog! I signed up for Blog Mastermind in December and recently ‘graduated’ from the course having completed all of the lessons. The doors closed in December but they are opening again in a few days time.

When I wrote my review of Blog Mastermind my biggest frustration was that the pace was fixed at one lesson a week and because I had already been blogging for a few months I wanted to go faster. I’m pleased to report that Yaro has told me that he will having a home-study format available for those that want to buy the whole thing up front and work at their own pace.

The standard cost will be $97 a month and it is designed as a 6-month training program. However if you buy it in standalone format the price is $497 which saves you $85.

Yaro Teaches Conversion Blogging

Leading up to the relaunch of Blog Mastermind Yaro is putting out some free videos that show how to make money blogging. The first of these is called Conversion Blogging. A mistake that many bloggers make is that they become a ‘page view slave’ which means pumping out a ton of content day after day to try and get some traffic which is then gone the next day. Worse still, many bloggers do little more than use contextual ad programs such as AdSense for monetization. This combo is a recipe for hard work with very little income!

The model that Yaro advocates is called Conversion Blogging. The essence is to firstly make more of an effort to retain some of the daily traffic with the use of an email list and secondly to effectively monetize that email list by occasionaly promoting products - either your own or somebody else’s.

You’ll notice that I have started to experiment with this model. However as Yaro points out in the video, it’s no good to just slap up an opt-in box and say “sign up to my newsletter”. Ooops, that must be why I have such a low sign-up rate hehe!

What’s New With the Relaunch?

I’ve been chatting to Yaro and I asked him if anything will be new with the relaunch. I was pleased to hear that the core lessons upon which this blog is built remain the same but he will be adding some new material that goes into depth about this new conversion blogging model. He also plans to hold monthly teleconferences with his students.

Over 90 Minutes of Free Video Content

You can watch the first video just by clicking here to go to the site and pressing play. However to access the second part which is over an hour in length you’ll need to opt-in with your email address. The first video explains what conversion blogging is but Yaro is quick to point out that the process cannot work unless you build up a reasonably successful blog first.

The subject of building a successful blog is the topic of the second video and of course is the main focus of the Blog Mastermind course. He discusses techniques such as blog commenting, and guess who he chooses to use as an example? See its worth watching the second video just to see my name in lights! Oh wait, that’s probably only of interest to me :-)

Some Other Free Resources

One thing that helped me in the beginning was the 50-page PDF report, Blog Profits Blueprint. I read this several times and implemented everything in it before signing up to the proper course. If you can’t afford the cost of Blog Mastermind I highly recommend this report. I’ve seen several ebooks about blogging and even the paid ones aren’t as good as this, and of course this blueprint is free.

If you’re brand new to blogging and if you are struggling with the technical setup details in particular then you might like Yaro’s secondary site Become a Blogger. This site contains 10 free videos showing you just how to get started blogging.

Is Blog Mastermind Worth the Money?

Blog Mastermind is a product that claims to teach you a method of making money with a blog. The promise is that you can earn a full time income, around $5,000 a month from two hours work a day. If you do manage to reach that then obviously the cost of $97 a month is justified.

I can only answer this from my own experience. My biggest source of revenue has come from promoting Bluehost in a free ebook that I gave away on this blog. Blog Mastermind does not discuss this strategy. It talks extensively about affiliate marketing but not in form of free giveaways. However, that ebook would not have got even a fraction of the exposure without this blog.

I see many bloggers just pumping out content, slapping up some AdSense and wondering why they’re only making a few bucks. Yaro’s strategy has a bias towards affiliate marketing and of course that can be very lucrative in a niche such as Internet marketing where every month there is some big launch with a big fat commission attatched to it. But if you’re into trout fishing or my favourite, toenail clipping then I believe you need to be prepared to develop your own product of some kind if you want to make a significant income.

I’m still not at that $5,000 mark but everything I have earned so far has come from this blog in one way or another with the exception of my AdSense earnings which are about $30 a month! There is one area in which I have put a lot of effort which Yaro doesn’t talk all that much about and that is social media. He says that if you build a great blog that people will stumble / tweet / digg you automatically. Maybe, but I think a little extra effort helps too! However, if armed with my Twitter Guide (actually that could really use an update!) and free StumbleUpon lessons you can’t go wrong!

The problem with Blog Mastermind is that it provides a complete solution from beginning to end so if you have already started blogging then the chances are that much of the early lessons will be old news to you. This was my experience. If you are a brand new blogger then you stand to learn more than anybody else but then you are probably more likely to be resistant to spending $97 a month!

Tricky :-)

Thanks for the write-up Caroline.

Coming from your technical background I’m not surprised you found the first lessons in Blog Mastermind easy. Unfortunately most people don’t have your gift with technology. That’s why I deliberately had 5 advanced lessons created for those who are experienced bloggers, which now can be started immediately when you join the program.

You also neglected to mention all the videos, audios and other resources outside of the lessons.

This content alone would take a month to get through and can be accessed immediately. There’s plenty of advanced discussion in there.

Anyway - once the program goes live your readers can check out the exact contents and make up their minds.

Thanks for writing this review and I hope everyone enjoys the free videos and the blueprint report.

I run into that a lot with ebooks and membership programs. I only pick up a few new pointers and much of the rest I know. But it also doesn’t hurt to follow a set plan for a while to get back to basics. I used Yaro’s free book to give me a daily schedule. On the schedule was stuff I knew how to do, but had neglected to do because I did know the techniques. Sometimes when we search for new techniques, all we really need to do is slow down and focus on what works. And sometimes a membership site helps with procrastination in the various forms it appears.

Yeah,. I’ve seen Yaro’s 2 videos and I learned some new things which I’d implement on my blog asap.

Maybe I should join this.. even one idea took from his program and implemented in my blogging business could make the difference between making thousands and making tens of thousands or even more.

Best wishes!

I’m very glad that you can purchase the $500 package. I’m also glad that the doors aren’t immediately closing, and that I have a couple of months to save for it :)

I believe this program is best used in conjunction with other programs. I intend to get a skellie social media package, blog mastermind and andrew and daryl grants e-book package. Not all at once of course!

Regarding adsense, Garry Conn does an excellent job of providing free advice. Along with Joel Comms e-book, I feel i’m equiped with enough with this advice.

:) Your stumberush course has helped with the social media side, too!

Hi Caroline

I got this posy by e mail and read it straight away. I am glad that Yaro clarified some of the points you raise. I would like to go faster than 6 months but not sure about working in isolation on a home study course plus shelling out so much money up front.

To your comment that it was only of interest to you that he used your blog as an example. In fact it was also to mine as I found your blog, your downloadable book, discovered Bluehost which looks really worthwhile. I’ve also written about your blog on the Facebook wall of my group (Starting out in business) and on my blogs (http://moregspinsights.blogspot.com to name but one)

Keep up the great work !

Thanks for your honest review. I’m a computer scientist too whose looking to get into blogging full time and have been looking at the Blog Mastermind course. I’ll probably try it out a month or so and see how it works for me. Again thanks for the honest review and all the helpful content you provide on your site.

Very interesting post. I must say that you have a great looking blog. I appreciate that you don’t have adsense plastered everywhere like so many “money-making” blogs. One thing I would suggest is to put an unblockable pop up that is a coupon to get more sign ups for your newsletter.

Jordans last blog post..How To Use Emotion In Video Marketing

@Yaro, oh yeah I forgot all that other stuff. I must admit I have been quite lazy - I’ve only worked through the main lessons and I skipped over the other stuff :)

@Stephan, yeah this is true. One thing I liked about BMM is the action items at the end of each lesson - it reminds you of what needs to be done and that is something I copied for my own course.

@Jade, ooh I didn’t know Skellie had done a social media package, I haven’t seen anything new on her blog for ages.

@Gillian, cool and thanks very much for the FB plug :)

@Kim, One thing I should have mentioned but forgot is that there is a money back guarantee, 30 days I think.

@Jordon, I DESPISE popups - scum of the Internet! If I ever have a popup on my blog I give every reader permission to come around my house and beat me a very large stick! :-)

With the way you’re tackling social media, that should be your super strong point extremely fast!!

The free ebook is a very useful technique for bringing in money; I do that myself on my site too.

Enjoy, Barbara

@Caroline I agree with you that normal pop ups are annoying as hell and will turn visitors away. But I am not talking about those. In fact maybe I shouldn’t call them pop ups. What it does is briefly displays a graphic of a coupon which covers about 20% or less of the fold. When your visitor clicks on it, then they go to a special page where you can offer a discount to a product of yours when they subscribe to your newsletter. This technique was brought out by John Reese and other website owners have responded that this works well. Of course every blog community is different and you know better than anyone else what your visitors like, so maybe its not for you. Keep up the good work. :)

Caroline -

If you go to Skellies hire page, she offers a number of services on a freelance basis. Currently she has stopped offering them because she had so much demand :(

However when going through her archives I found an e-book called ‘the simple web.’ :) I’m really enjoying it!

Best of luck with the 30DC next month.

@Jordon, oh yes I’ve seen those - lightboxes I think? Not quite as bad as the regular popus but as you say, still not for me :-)

Caroline, have you tried to use the affiliate marketing methods that Yaro teaches? I know that if you have a small email list it can be hard to make much money from it but even if you have just 1,000 people on your list I would expect that you could easily generate another 2, 4 or $600 a month in commissions.

@Mikael, no not really. Though I will most likely promote Blog Mastermind itself in the list :)

Hi Caroline - just found this post through your tweet - thanks for a great review!

But I am still tossing up between ‘Teaching Sells’ and/or Yaro’s course. Teaching Sells is good for me because I am setting up a membership site, and also creating virtual learning environments because of my academic background/phd (this is in addition to my ‘problogging career’! hehe) - one day perhaps! :-)

So my needs are essentially two-fold.

I have also found other alternatives to Yaro’s course, which are really good.

One is the ‘blogging in action’ guide and a precompiled blog, with plugins, etc and video training - the content is incredible, high quality and current for WP 2.5/6 and very affordable.

Other alternative is web2.0 wealth blogging package/membership site, which is also fantastic guide, lots of plugins, a precompiled blog - all you need to do is upload it/install, and lots of training videos, including installation, configuration, traffic, monetization and more - and forums, support….

This has also been upgraded to ‘expert wordpress pro’ (expertwordpress.com), which is a similiar package, by the same person, Alex Syseof of howtospoter.com, where you can get the web2.0 wealth vsn - but its better, as the new precompiled blog is fully customisable, comes with lots of niche headers, all customisable with click of buttons, plus guides and video training, including niche research, traffic, monetisation strategies, etc (only 27.00 for gold membrship).

- there is also a lot more emphasis on social media/web2.0 marketing - and he hates the ‘adsense multiple blog’ type approach too.

If you upgrade to platinum (I think its a OTO), which is still cheaper than blogmastermind, then there is even more training and videos, including about content, and ongoing updates.

Alex, who is also a friend of Yaro’s, has really taken off, since I first bought his web2.0 wealth package (which is also social media/SEO optimised) - and in a short time, is getting to the 10,000 reader mark! So he is proving it works. And his free blog provides lots of great information about wp, social media, including video training and guides, and now providing free webinars.

Alex also makes no guarantees and takes all risk on himself with 60 days to test, as does Yaro. While the techie stuff has all been taken away, still requires work and time to get your blog successful as an ‘authority’ type site or launchpad..

Hmmmm - so this, together with the 30 Day Challenge, which is also about setting up blog in niche - well, I already have a lot of content.

I have been accepted into Teaching Sells, even though the doors were closed (I begged!) and was thinking of paying full amount for Yaro’s course. But already have so much and if Yaro is not closing dooors immediately, then I have some time to think on this.

The other benefit of joining Yaro’s course too, is meeting Yaro! Its not always what you know, but who you know, and I have had contact with Yaro before (fellow Aussie), but haven’t managed to since. So, this would be great to have direct access via forums, etc.

I made final decision re: teaching sells based on the video tour you made awhile ago, showing the inside, and also their sales page (especially given my aim to create virtual learning environment/membersites, not just blogs)

I am also doing an offline course on freelance writing (corporate and technical) - where will I find all the time, in addition to actually setting things up! - eek.

Anyway - just thought I would post a few options for others to consider as well.

Would be great to have a look inside Yaro’s member area, if one was paying for full homestudy course upfront. This would be the real decider for me.

Need to think carefully.
Do you have any further thoughts, given the above, about whether I should still join Yaro’s course? Or anyone here have any thoughts?

@Megan, I haven’t heard of those other blogging packages so I can’t comment on those. You don’t need to join BMM to meet Yaro though! He is on twitter too @yarostarak so send him a message heh!

Yaro’s course is all about teaching, there are no tools included. If there is tech stuff that you are struggling with, he won’t help you here as his approach is to outsource. His course really is focused around the content production, marketing and monetization aspect of blog building.

30DC is another beast entirely. Although the preferred content platform is a blog, it is just a place to dump content - it is in no way, shape or form to be confused with what you and I would consider a real blog, there’s no conversation going on there - it’s all set up purely for SEO. I remember being confused by that last year but of course it’s so much easier for me this year as I know what the deal is!

thanks for your reply caroline! yes, will send yaro a tweet or two I think - hehe :-)

Well, I think I have enough blog ‘techie’ stuff and tools with the other packages I mentioned (am also going to get the expertwordpress upgrade, as get discount being web2.0wealth member).

What I am really interested in is blog content in particular (and for my lessons/memberships). While I am a published writer (hardcopy world), this has not translated to my blogspot (as I have only treated it as a hobby to date). So content of value and different types is my big issue, in order to provide real value, as you do, and get some interaction happening (and thanks for the clarification re: 30DayChallenge blogging).

Thus - the ‘content production, marketing and monetization aspect of blog building’ of Yaro’s course is certainly of interest to me.

Perhaps I shall do a tweet to yaro and also ask him directly and hope that he answers! :-)

Re: Teaching Sells - just got email from them and they will be doing quite a bit on the ‘moodle’ open source CMS for educators, which I may be using to host some of my larger courses on (for academic students probably, much later) - so this is final confirmation on that one for that particular interest/goal.

thanks again. And great going with 30DayChallenge. As said on twitter, you are very quick. Its bedtime nearly again for me, and I felt as if I have been very busy, but not productive. If I really tried, I could get a site/blog up in a day.

What’s stopping me - health, dr appt for one I guess. Am I ready. But I think its mainly fear factor! Fear of success even! eek.

Was video/lesson 6 of the challenge as good as all the hype promised BTW?

@Meg, I was unimpressed with day 6! Basically, the piece of software that they are hyping is something called “WordPress Direct” that allows you to install your WP blog in just seconds and it has the theme / plugins done etc. That’s nice for the technically challenged but I like complete control over my sites so it’s just not for me. Plus after the trial for 30DC users, it incurrs a monthly fee. I’ve done the day 6 work but on my own sites that I built myself.
