Keyword Research with Market Samurai
Now that I have covered a bunch of introductory topics that discuss the intention and strategy of the project I want to start getting down to the implementation details. This is the first of some video posts that I am going to do which will show you exactly how I work. This first video covers the first stage of the process - the keyword research. My tool of choice is Market Samurai which is a paid tool.
Everything covered in today’s video can be done using Google’s free keyword tool and in later videos I’ll try to find free alternatives to Market Samurai where possible.
As this is the first video in the series I’ve spent a couple of minutes just reiterating the basics of the project and why we are doing keyword research in the first place. At the beginning I talk about where to start your research from and discuss my post on how to find high paying niches for AdSense so go and check that post if you don’t know where to start.
I then go on to cover:
- The three most important criteria for any keyword
- How to start off your research
- How to filter out low traffic keywords at the start
- Time saving tips for Market Samurai
- An explanation of Marketed Samurai competition data
- The difference between phrase match and broad match
- What filters to use, and when
- Using the Google Tool to help brainstorm long tail keywords
- Branching into related niches
- Recap of the whole keyword research process
The video is longer than I anticipated at 23 minutes so it may take a few minutes to load. You can also download the movie file for offline viewing. Hopefully future videos will not be as long!

Other Market Samurai Resources
Market Samurai is a complex tool and I don’t want to waste a bunch of your time teaching you what others have already done. If you are confused by any of the features then I would recommend that you check the official Market Samurai Tutorials and also the 30 Day Challenge Training videos.
Coming Up Next
This video has shown you the initial keyword research but it is only half of the story. What you should have so far is a list if potential keywords to target but a problem with search traffic is that if you can’t get in the top couple of pages in the serps you won’t see anywhere near enough traffic to be profitable so what we really need to do is make sure that we actually have a snowballs chance in hell of competiting on a particular keyword.
The next video will show you what I find to be the best feature of Market Samurai - the competition module. The functionality in this module allows you to do in an hour what would take a day to do manually! Get this part wrong and you’ll be wasting your time on keywords that will never rank high enough to get traffic. Stay tuned :-)

Caroline,
Using the Google keyword tool the way you have with Market Samurai is sheer genius!
I too find it very irritating that when I ask for MS to expand a list it keeps throwing in other words and phrases that I’m not looking for. It gets worse as you drill down your original list and all of the same words keep getting included in your expanded list.
I hope they fix that as well.
Great video and brilliant technique.
Best,
Jeff
