Is There Room For Another Internet Marketing Blog?

August 8, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

I had an interesting email earlier in the week and it is not the first of it’s kind that I have received. It came from Johnn (no website listed) and this is what he asked:

My question, if you have the time and inclination, is - is there room  for yet another online marketing blog?

I do online marketing at work, and while on vacation this week I decided I’d love to do a blog or website about what I’ve learned, and to use the site to explore topics about what I don’t know (which means I could be writing for a lonnnnggg time, lol).

I stumbled onto your blog, and from there I lost a day chainsmoking linkbait. Wow - there are so many people blogging and selling online marketing. It seems like such a crowded topic.

I had hoped my blog/site would one day replace my day job. :)

But, is there room for yet another online marketing blog?

What are your thoughts?

It would seem that this is indeed an important question for many people because I had another one asking a very similar question today. This one came from Brooks Van Norman and this is what he asked me:

I want to become an authority like you and Yaro…but so does everyone else it seems.  I’m humbled by how much good content there is out there and also how
many people seem to be doing the same thing….

You started in 9/07… and today there are probably 1,000’s of others doing something similar.

Am I too late to a party with standing room only?  What’s going to separate newcomers from the rock stars like you and Yaro? Any room left at the top?

The short answer is YES! Absolutely!

There Is ALWAYS Room for One More (Or a Million More)

Is this the ONLY blog about Internet Marketing that you read? I highly doubt it! Do you find that with other blogs of a similar topics that the subject area overlaps somewhat? Sure it does! Why then, do you read lots of different content sources on the same topic?

Because each one offers a different and unique perspective!

I write in my style of writing that only I can write because I am the only person on the planet that is me. Nobody else can write this blog. My writing will resonate with some people, it will turn off some people, it will leave others with indifference and of course there are loads of in-between’s. And so it is for every single one of you out there.

You have your own unique voice, a way of writing that only you can write because you are the only person in the world who is you. And what you write will find its way into the hearts of the people who resonate with you. And like me, there will be people who don’t like you, who don’t like what you have to say or the way you say it. And that’s ok too because that’s the way the world works!

Every Perspective Is Unique

If you watch a movie with a friend, you are both seeing the same movie but is your experience of that movie the same? Think about it…. No it’s not. Try this exercise. Go to Amazon, find the best seller list, pick a topic you like and pick a book with many customer reviews. Are there 5 star ratings? Are there 1 star ratings too? Are there 2, 3 & 4 star ratings? How can this be?

How can the exact same book be received so differently? Because we each filter what we read / watch / feel / experience through our own unique perspective, and this perspective is absolutely unique to each and every one of us. So just because somebody else is writing about a topic that you want to write about, that doesn’t exclude you because you can write about that topic in the way that only you can, because you are you and you’re not me, or Yaro, or anybody else!

This Extends to Any Blog, Any Market, Any Business, Any Concept

There is always room for one more blog on Internet Marketing or any market because you offer a unique perspective. There is always room for just one more busines, one more flower shop, one more utility company and so on. There is always room for one more book on a topic, or one more movie, or <insert anything you could possibly think of>.

There is ALWAYS room for more, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. If you have been holding back on doing something because you think it has already been done before, then recognise your own uniqueness and go ahead anyway!

In the words of Forrest Gump, “that’s all I have to say about that!”.

Every blogger offers a unique perspective into their subject matter of choice. My take on this is that YOU can always build a “better mousetrap” and don’t let anybody tells you otherwise.

Spoken like a true advocate of abundance.
Although you didn’t touch on this point, and Johnn only hinted at it, the unspoken question for many is, “Can I actually make money doing this?”

Depending on who you listen to, you’ll get both “Yes” and “No” responses.

The naysayers say that the Internet Marketing niche is over saturated. The affirmers remind us that we don’t need to reach the whole market. If you, Caroline, had 300 people buying your products at least four times a year, your income would equal many annual salaries.

So, I agree. Go for it! Just remember to read Caroline’s first 5 months of posts , when not too much income was reported in relation to ALL the hard work she was doing.

Cheers,

Mitch

I think it all depends on your goals.

If your goal is to turn your blog into a hugely profitable venture, it’s possible, but a great deal of work.

If your goal is to put your thoughts on IM out for the world to see, that would be at the other end of the spectrum.

A third goal (and one that I think has the most real potential) is to add credibility to your name or your business. If your niche is IM, use your blog to focus on your specialty. It can then help establish you as an authority when the time comes. At the same time, if you have frequent blog posts bemoaning your inability to make money online, your blog might hurt sales of a course or ebook selling a system to do just that. ;)

Thanks for answering my question Caroline. I look forward to reading the comments. I’m now writing down ideas for my unique angle to help differentiate my site from others. It’s a hard exercise so far!

This is a nice post, and I agree that if people are passionate about the subject, then they shouldn’t worry too much about the competition. Just do a good job and find a way to be remarkable.

That said, it’s also possible to make some great money by taking what you learn from your love of internet marketing and using it in other fields or even teaching it to people in other fields. I know someone, for example, who does very well teaching internet marketing to real estate agents. Her blog combines both her passions. :)

@Mitch, I’m glad he didn’t ask the question of money because that’s really a different subject. I believe that everybody has something unique that they can bring to anything they try but that doesn’t necessarily translate into everything that you try will be profitable.

@Papers, lol yes I really should update the picture! That was taken two years ago and I was much fatter then lol! Trouble is, I just don’t have a decent up to date one. When I get one I’ll do a mass update but that same pic is used *everywhere*.

@Johnn, if you have to ‘brainstorm’ ideas for how to be unique, you’ll fail. Your uniqueness is inside of you just waiting to flow out - you can’t force it. Just be yourself naturally in everything that you write, no effort is required.

Love the domain name, it would be highly amusing if you actually registered that :p

@Lindsay, why does everybody bring this topic back to money? Everybody is unique, that does not mean that everybody will make money with every word that comes out of them. Two entirely different things. Even though the general theme of this blog is to make money online, this post is about simply being YOU.

But of course, often people who are passionate about their topic and find a way to bring that uniqueness into it also end up finding a way to monetize it. I think trouble comes when people start out that way, when they come from the angle of “okay I need to make money, how can I be different?”

Maybe I should write a follow up post on this topic…

This is a good topic. It seems that there is new internet marketing blogs coming up everyday, but most of them are there to simply promote an affiliate program. For a blog to be successful it has to be unique in some way and place the content first and ads second.

I believe that the topic was brought back to money because Johnn mentioned the income replacing his day job.

I would argue there is not another room for a journey blog unless you can bring something remarkable to the table. Caroline has done this by successfully marketing a number of products (the twitter guide and e-book) and gaining a following in the process. Reading about this journey is fascinating.

I would love to see a blog dedicated to a specific area of internet marketing. A journey isn’t interesting to me - as I have limited time - unless there is something really unique to it. I’ve been toying with blogging for a year and don’t want to see rehashes of stuff I’ve already learnt.

Instead, I would rather see a blog hone in on a topic I want to learn more about. Right now, I would love to read some pillar content on email list creation! Anybody? :)

Great take on that topic and I find it not only inspirational, but practical as well.

The great thing about internet marketing is that once you create a brand, you can use that brand to funnel traffic to your other sites or affiliates. In my opinion, regardless of your topic, if you brand yourself and promote yourself properly, you can accomplish anything in the business.

I was wrong regarding “Internet Marketing Blog” and I was believed no more space for Internet Marketer for blogging for the same niche on internet. That’s because to many same niche growing like mushrooms after rain!

Now, you’ve explained me very well.

And, Caroline Middlebrook… Thank you!

Mistic

@Jade, I disagree on the ‘journey’ type blog. This is one area in particular where I especially feel that there is always room for more for the simple reason that your story is so unique that it will resonate with different people according to their own stories. I get emails from people saying how their lives are mirroring mine for example.

The fact that you want to see a specific topic covered is exactly WHY more blogs are always needed - every reader has a different need!

I must say, I’d love to see another website dealing with internet marketing that writes EXHAUSTIVE articles. Another DoshDosh would simply make my month.

It’s really interesting how few exhaustive websites there are, given that Google rankings typically “love” longer articles as well. Google’s happy, people are happy, everyone wins. ;-)

Caroline, You make some really good points, there is always room at the table. While it would seem like there is too many, there are very few who have the commitment to actually stick with it and stay committed.

Hi Caroline
I’m an example of someone who had not done something that she really wanted to do because of the thought, “so many others are already doing it, so what’s the point”. I did not have the awareness to see it as a thought “only” and process the feeling (of not being enough in my case). I was lost in it. Reading your article brought back that time for me and how sad it is to hold oneself back because of thoughts and circumstances.

I have to agree with Lindsay. There is an unlimited amount of people in the online world that has no clue what so ever about Internet Marketing and SEO. The real estate business might be one of them but being highly competitive I would suggest you target other niches. Try to look up search related to carpenters, plumbers, toilet cleaners or any other “normal” brick and mortar business and you will find that they suck at IM.

What would it be worth to your local carpenter to be number one for woodwork in your town (or whatever phrase carpenters need to rank for)? What about dentists? Ballet teachers? The list goes on and on…

There are so many unique angles to an IM blog that you’ll never run out of opportunities.
