I’m Launching a New Blog & Revamping my Newsletter!

July 25, 2008 Posted under: Blogging by Caroline Middlebrook

If you watched Yaro Starak’s video about conversion blogging you’ll know that he discusses the importance of building an email list. My first attempt a building a list was to launch a newsletter which I did back in April but to be honest I have not been happy with it - either the content of the newsletter itself or the signup rate.

Newsletters Are Low Value

The word ‘newsletter’ is quite vague but it generally suggests that the content will contain some kind of news. Many websites that have a newsletter publish news about the website itself or services offered by that site - in other words, pretty much just a sales pitch. Even though my newsletter contains news about the Internet marketing industry and not news about me, the preconception of a newsletter has probably led to the low signup rate.

However, if I am quite honest, I haven’t been happy with what I was putting out. I basically pulled together some mini news bytes from the previous week or two but there was nothing in there that couldn’t be found in somebody else’s blog or in social media somewhere.

A High Value Offer

Another thing that I am now seeing an increasing number of bloggers offering is a basic incentive to sign up. They simply offer some kind of free report in exchange for the email address. I have signed up for a few of these and in my experience almost all of these people don’t go on to foster any kind of relationship with their list so of course most people will download the free report and unsubscribe.

Most marketers build a list so that they can pitch something to that list at some point. This is the technique that Yaro is really emphasising in the new version of Blog Mastermind (re-opens next Tuesday). The problem is that many people who do nothing more than just offer a free report and then send out the odd pitch is that their list are not receptive to being sold to and they will unsubscribe very quickly.

In order to keep people on your list you have to provide valuable information over and over again. A free report doesn’t cut it. Yaro’s list is actually the best example that I have seen because it has a very specific focus which is highly related to the subject of his blog - Blog Traffic Tips, and it contains over 50 tips sent out on a weekly basis. In other words, the subscriber gets valuable content each and every week. Yaro then monetizes the list with the occasional promotion but I suspect that the majority of the people on the list stay subscribed because they are getting such good information.

I’ll come back to the subject of email lists in just a moment - first an interlude…

I’m Launching a Brand New Blog!

I have been contemplating starting a new blog (or taking this one in a different direction) for quite a long time now. The urge to do so has been getting stronger and stronger and last week I was hit with the perfect name and made the decision to start it. The blog is called…

Life Should Feel GOOD!

It’s not live just yet… I’ll be launching it in the next week or so once I have written a few posts. The name of the blog should give you a clue to the subject! Basically it’s about my quest to live a life that truly feels good. Mine hasn’t been feeling all that good for a while and frankly I’ve had enough of all the crap that life seems to want to throw at me so I’m on a mission to turn it all around!

This new blog will be very much like this one in that I’ll be mainly sharing my insights and what I learn on my own journey. As usual, I’m no expert :-)

So, back to my newsletter…

Newsletter Total Revamp

When I created this blog I was a total newbie and I really didn’t know what I was doing. But in the last year I have learned rather a lot and now I get a chance to put it into practice! I wonder how fast I can build up this new blog with all the knowledge that I have now? Now I get a chance to really put Blog Mastermind to the test!

I’m sure that some of you would also be interested to watch me build this blog from scratch so rather than do this as a new project like I usually do, I am turning this into a series for my newsletter, only it’s not going to be a ‘newsletter’ anymore.

I’ll be getting rid of the existing content entirely and changing it to be almost entirely dedicated to documenting my progress in building this new blog from scratch. I will of course be sharing all of the techniques that I use to do that.

So if you are interested in watching me grow a brand new blog from scratch then sign up to the newsletter! I’ve contacted my graphic artist to redo the artwork for me so the opt-in box will make more sense soon!

And yes I’m sure I’ll lose a few of my existing subscribers by doing this but I really don’t have very many anyway :-)

How fun!! I love the idea of the new blog (after all, my blog is called Life in the Fun Lane!!) and the non-newsletter newsletter! I’ve learned so much from you since last year’s 30DC and it seems like perfect timing to start this new project at the same time as this year’s 30DC! As for subs, well, show me an internet marketer who doesn’t want their life to feel good … Yeah, that’s what I thought. :-)

Thanks for the newsletter tips, and best wishes for the start of your new blog.

Great idea for the new blog Caroline - colours seem a bit ‘in your face’ though, but sure something people can get used to. Good luck with it.

Dear Caroline -

Good luck on your new blog. Sounds quite different.

I will be one of your first subscribers!

And I do not need any free goods. You always have something interesting to say.

Hi Caroline

I find your total honesty so refreshing. You certainly won’t be losing me as a subscriber.

Good luck and I look forward to watching your progress on your new project. I am starting one of my own: Nomadic Entrepreneur targeting people like me who for family reasons need to earn an income without being location specific and people who quite simply can’t live without travelling but need the $$$ to fund the lifestyle.

Hi Caroline,
Good luck with building your new blog. I enjoy reading your content but I don’t think I have really ever left a comment. I understand about the need to make life feel good. I knew at a very young age that that is how life was supposed to be, not complicated! As a web developer and designer I know how overwhelming things can get and I to created an outlet for the other side of me! Knowing everyone did not think the same way but yet everyone seems to at some point in their lives seek the same thing. My company is http://garlicdzign.com but my peaceful side is what will show up on my name above. Good luck, I hope it works well for you! I will be watching to..

Hi Caroline

What a fabulous idea about the blog. Its been nearly two years for me since I first heard about the law of attraction and began implementing into my life. Not much has changed except sometimes I feel so excited I want to dance in the street or hug a stranger or leave really personal comments on someones blog. The difference is for the first time in my life I feel good. It will be awesome to hear how another person is finding the same journey and since you’re a great social marketer I can’t wait to see what resources you uncover.

Caroline,

Great idea. Its a good mantra for life. Not to say this is what you are doing but I have a blog on building your internet presence and a personal blog. In my past experience I felt constrained to stay on topic with a niche blog. Since creating an outlet for random thoughts and such on a personal blog, I have found that I actually don’t feel the need to post off topic that much. It also has created a feeling of a more genuine reflection of myself when I post on both blogs or when commenting.

I think you will enjoy having some varied outlets.

In the end, provide a real voice or a valuable product and you will always have visitors.

Hi Caroline

Its been awhile since commented, so apologies for length! I did hear on the grapevine (or twitter) about new blog coming and have been waiting for news, so this is fantastic!

Somehow I had the feeling it would be in this area of personal development and self-growth, given your own journey at the moment! :-)

And I absolutely LOVE your new non-newsletter topic! :-D
As you know I am in process of moving my ‘hobby’ blogspots to self-hosted wp blogs, and have never done this before, so your information on the creation process of your blog will be invaluable! We all usually see pre-built or established blogs with advice, so your approach is really quite unique in this!

We seem to be on almost ‘mirror paths’ online! My Self Help and web2/resell rights blogs - when moved will also have more of an emphasis on my journey too (currently it has this, but also other topics and mainly provides free resources, etc or advice from my psych. background, etc, but I will be doing more on ‘lessons’ I have learned/am learning!).

One of the blogs is also being integrated into a new blog on BloggingAllTheWay (coming soon too!), - but it will be broader, as a main platform for my online journey, similiar to your own online journey account here (although our online paths are slightly different in terms of projects)

- and it willl continue to include the category of ‘mindset’ (even though slight overlap with my selfhelp blog), because mindset of internet marketers is fundamental for success, not just the strategies, as you know. So a multitude of categories on that one - although it will still be ‘focused’ on earning and internet marketing in these areas.

Thus again, your focus here and new blog and newsletter venture, on your own experiences and ‘lessons’ learned is truly wonderful, which is why I am also expanding on this too

(I hate it when finding sites which provide all the advice in the world, but which are not based on experience, or which lack proof of learning this info - its misleading in a sense, and I hate hearing about people paying a fortune to ‘mentors’ who are just ‘reselling’ programs which they have yet to succeed at themselves!).

That’s why people love your site so much I think - no pretense here at all. I think we feel (or I do) that you are speaking to ‘us’ as people/individuals, not just to a ‘faceless audience’.

So I am also going to share more in areas where I have found myself ‘frozen with fear or info. overload’, which has prevented me from moving forward - eg. how I have overcome this (I managed to achieve 3 major tasks, get a main site up and running in 2 nights, after a year of being frozen and not actually getting them done - it was an AMAZING feeling - to overcome these challenges, even though they may have seemed like basic tasks to more experienced people.

I think lots of assumptions are made out there for newbies.

Many of us experience this fear/freeze, so the more we can support each other the better. These areas I was frozen in - where I could not even find the knowledge to help me - well, now I know what to teach others, as you yourself are doing, because you have never made the pretense of making a fortune or stating/promising the world in ‘making our millions’!

You have always been so open and I think so many of us want this type of information, not to feel so alone in this online world of internet marketing :-)

I really look forward to it all Caroline, your new ventures and posts! I know you have become very interested in the Law of Attraction and such. So many people out there, especially in the ‘offline’ world, have either never heard of it, or as I have found recently, are very very cynical about the whole area of ’self help’, especially modern style literature (I also have some skepticisms in some areas) but it is always a worthwhile venture to grow and improve one’s self.

Its even better to share these lessons without, again, pretending that we know it all. We are all learning, to the day that we leave this earth. Sharing this knowledge helps, especially in the honest and transparent way that you write.

Again, its our unique perpesctives and ‘lessons’. Not just the same-old warm and fuzzy recycled stuff that can be found at times. And I too am sick and tired of the ’sh..’ that life is throwing at me at the moment (or that I have ‘attracted’ hehe!). We can’t be strong and positive all of the time, despite trying(!), so its especially during these difficult times, that the lessons shared to get through these times become invaluable. Our experiences are all unique! So I am also looking forward to reading people’s comments.

I am sure that many people will benefit from what you are doing and contribute! In fact, many of us are probably all on these journeys which is why, in addition the value you give, we all keep coming back!
:-)
Let me know if I can help in any way, particularly when I move my blogs to self-hosted ones and they become more professional :-)

I hope I haven’t been ’shamelessly’ promoting my own new blogs (continuation of existing ones started in 2006) - its just that its wonderful to find like-minded people on similiar paths, and I hope that all of our information (and the comments from readers) can offer different aspects in this two-fold journey of ours!

You are a great person Caroline. You really value your subscribers, that’s obvious! Will talk soon as can :-)

PS am seriously thinking of joining Yaros BlogMastermind program. Do you have any thoughts? I know its of high quality, being from Yaro, but can you tell us a little of what you learned perhaps. Highly recommend it? and for what levels of knowledge? (perhaps you have already written an article on this and I missed it though?) But any advice greatly appreciated before I make decision to join :-)

OK, Caroline. I definitely want to read your insights as you launch your new blog, so I have signed up for your newsletter. But to tell you the truth, I’d rather read your insights on this blog or the other, rather than in an email newsletter. I send out an email letter to my readers too — but only to nudge those who haven’t made blog reading or feed reading a habit yet. But anyway, good luck. You have been a big help to me, so I wish you the best.

Caroline,

Your timing is impeccable!

I am currently stuck in the low email list signup/blog revamp/new blog creation decision matrix.

I’ve always enjoyed following you for the unique insights you bring to every topic you undertake and I KNOW there are a ton more people in my same situation.

Will subscribers to your current newsletter need to sign up again?

Just let me know and I’m there!

Thanks again for all of your great insights!

Hi Caroline

I’m really interested in following how you’re going to set up your new blog from scratch as it’s something I’m also keen to do. I love the new name as well, but assume you’ll still be sharing your internet marketing expertise and ideas as well as the new stuff as I always find your teachings very valuable. My own work involves nudging people to get to their important stuff so I’m all for the idea of life feeling good! I also specialise in marketing coaching so there’ll be some intereting synergy! I think the offer of a free report for building a list followed by regular, on going great content is def the way to go. I have done a newsletter, but I find that people are so busy these days that a blog feels much easier to dip in and out of somehow.

Thanks a million too for the Stumble Rush lessons - I can’t wait to start and am hoping to sign up for the advanced course too. Just need to get to it now ………….! I’m excited about doing the course and will feedback soon.

All the best Caroline and assume you’ll be starting to share your start of your new blog journey with us soon here?

Hi Caroline
I love your new idea and will definately come and see your new blog. I also watched Yaro’s new video this week and it really inspired me for my own new blog as well. I’d always been a little muddled on what really needs to go in a newsletter but now I have a ton of ideas and a better idea of the function of a newsletter. By the way - I signed up for your free Stumblerush lessons and they’ve been terrific - thanks!

Congrats on your new venture! You put out quality material - I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading it.

Enjoy, Barbara

@Brian, I started this blog as a personal blog but perhaps in hindsight that was rather narrow minded as it is really just one slice of my life - my online business. Of course there is much more to it than that but at the time I couldn’t imagine wanting to write about other aspects which is why I went the ‘personal’ blog route with this one. Never mind :-)

@Megan, now why didn’t I think of a mindset category? I find that a lot of what I want to write about here is about mindset and it kind of overlaps with the subject of the new blog and I worry that it will be off-topic here so I just don’t post it usually. Maybe I’ll add that in!

I think you can never have too many personal stories. As you say, we are all unique and we all experience things in a slightly different way and we also explain them in a slightly different way and that’s why everybody resonates with different people and their different styles.

Regarding Blog Mastermind, yes I have written extensively on it -check the post before this one for my latest opinion on it.

@Terry, yes I’m sure many people will prefer that I discuss launching the new blog on this blog but I already give out an awful lot of info on this blog and I don’t feel like it needs anymore. This will finally give me some real substance to put in a newsletter so it feels like the right choice.

@Jeff, no I will use the current newsletter and simply change the content. The next edition will explain the changeover that is coming.

@nudgeme, the new blog won’t have anything to do with Internet marketing at all unless I happen to be relating something from my work. And no, I won’t be sharing anything about the new blog here - it will be exclusive to the newsletter. The only exception is if it generates any revenue (not a priority) then that will be mentioned in the monthly stat posts.

Hi Caroline,

You have to do what makes you happy and although an important goal for serious internet marketers is to build a list of responsive subscribers, we also have to be happy doing it.

That is the reason one quits their job to start an internet business, so they can have the power to make their own decisions and that is the way it should be.

If your future endeavors makes you happy then many of us will support your decision and watch you grow as well as hopefully help in that success.

Good luck.
