I Have a Webcam! See the Face Behind the Blog :-)

July 29, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

Well I couldn’t hide away behind my words forever! I got a headset a long time ago and I’ve done the occasional podcast and more recently, some podcasts but I really wanted to be able to do some ‘talking head’ style videos and so I got myself a webcam.

This video is basically just me saying hello and discussing what’s coming up on the blog during August.

You’re the new Ed Dale! (But much, much cuter.) I love it!

It really brings a new dimension to see your face & hear your voice. Really cool, I should do this. Too bad I don’t have a wonderful wild space to go where I could escape my self-consciousness . . .

Hey Caroline,

Love your video, I never would have thought you hadn’t done that before. You are a natural and very candid! I appreciate that. Good luck, I’m thinking that you will be making lots of money very soon, I’m sure :-)

You are much better looking than Ed. LOL

Just wonder what the Internet access is like in the Mud Flats?

Great job. Looking forward to the videos. I wish I could find time to do 30DC. I need to think about that.

Hi Caroline,

Great first “vlog” post! You are so brave. I have to admit that I skipped all the video parts in the 30DC pre-season as there was no way I could ever see myself doing that. My gut reaction was NO WAY!

Maybe I’ll take another look…

You’re completely adorable! I loved getting to really ’see’ you - you know, you see a person so much more on video! I will be following along with you, and trying to be more successful, myself. The kids are going back to school on the 7th and I hope to become way more productive!

Great idea Caroline! You’ve just gone up another notch in the relationship marketing area. Not only do we get to see your picture, we get to here the subtle nuances that make you a truly unique individual. Good luck and keep up the great work.

@Sonia, yeah I really do love the nature I have access to. If I drive to that town with the river I can walk all along it for about a mile, very nice.

@Mark, no internet access out there heh! But I didn’t need it to record that video.

@Kate, hehe well I’ve been working up to it for a while now. I’ve been blogging for almost a year!

@Lisa, hehe thank you! Yeah I feel like when I watch other people who do videos I feel like I am getting to know them much better.

Caroline,

Nicely done! No matter how nervous you were about it, it came out natural and relaxed. It’s the mark of a good blog writer that you “sound” just the same in print—it always comes across as Caroline having a conversation, just as this did.

Of course, you made it look so good that I want to do a video myself!

Regards,

Kelly

Hi Caroline,

I know how you feel. I would much prefer to a a screen capture video than actually getting in front of the camera. But I must say you are a natural and I love your accent. Sounds much better than mine.

My accent is a mix between California, NJ, MD and Texas. Sounds really good, NOT!

Anyway, I look forward to more great videos.

Hi Caroline Middlebrook,

This posted has totally changed my perception on you :) You’re quite funny! Before this I thought that you’re a serious person (based on your previous writing) :)

I can say, this is really nice post. I love video and podcast :)

PS: Keep posting the video/webcam. I love it!

Nicely done caroline!
i actualy had a laugh at the end when you didnt know how to stop the cam.

if it was me, i would have written my words down and practised 100 times!!! but your video was more ‘Real’

Well done!

Get rid of the blog and keep the vlog!!
=] lol

@Kelly, hehe well I hope you do. I think more people should do videos. I really think they are the way forward. Mind you, in small doses. I find that on blogs that *just* do video, it takes up too much of my time as I can read so much faster.

@Spidro, yeah after shooting that I thought, “where else can I take the webcam?”. I have quite a few places where I can go but its also weather dependent - our British summer does not usually last long!

@Mistic, funny? People always say that and I honestly don’t know why! I have never thought of myself as funny and always thought I was serious! Well there you go lol!

@Christopher, oh gosh if I had tried to memorise it I would have been there all day! No I just have to wing it or I’d just never get it done :-) At least now I know where the stop button is hehe.

Caroline,

About only doing video—yes, I just read a guest post yesterday by a guy I was very interested in reading more from, clicked to his blog, and found it was in the main, vids. Didn’t even have a “here’s the gist of it” paragraph so I could decided if I wanted to watch them.

I’m working. I want to read a few wise things, absorb, and move on. I certainly don’t want to turn on the sound and have everyone thinking I watch t.v. at work or some such. I don’t mind if folks do it once a week or something, but all the time is going to turn people off.

So for that guy, I’ll stick to reading his guest posts. Oh, well.

Until later,

Kelly

Lemme see which adjectives haven’t been used yet…

“Charming! Delightful! A breath of fresh air (literally)”

Great job! I may check out your ebook on video, if my satellite connection holds up. (Saw the tweet :) )

Hi CAroline,

I like the terminology “talking head videos”.

I just call them “up close and in your face”. lol

Must do my own too as long as I don’t scare away my readers!

Take care,

Nancy

Great video, backdrop much preferred than interior of room.

I do have a concern about accessibility to those with visual and hearing impairments. I would suggest a brief text outline of the video, not necessarily verbatim, so a screen reader to access it.

Just a thought…

@Patrick, I’m not going to be doing any kind of transcripts for this kind of video as it is literally just me waffling about nothing. However, I will include important points / links for other videos where appropriate.

I guess if I was to do videos, I’d plan them very carefully beforehand such that the watcher knows from the start what the learning outcomes will be.

I’ll be very interested to learn the extent to which this provides an ROI for you - producing videos may be time consuming, and you get no SEO benefit from the content, as there are no words for the search engines to read. But I’m sure there are many pros and cons - good luck!

Caroline Middlebrook

@Web design, ROI is simply NOT something I track on this blog. This is just a place where I write about the stuff I do online and of course I’ll plug my own stuff but I don’t track it. And no videos aren’t time consuming at all - that’s the huge benefit that they are so much quicker because I can just waffle and it’s done!

@Web design - Instructional videos aren’t much harder than going through the process you’re teaching for screenshots. In fact, when I make them, I usually do the video and screenshots in a single pass (pause is a wonderful thing). It takes me MUCH longer to type out step-by-step instructions than to just show how something is done on video.

@Caroline - It’s amazing how much a short video can change your mental image of a person. I’m glad you had the fortitude to shoot and post this, and I’m very glad I watched it. If any of my 30DC sites from this year start making money (up to $45/mo on one of mine from last year - Woo!), perhaps I’ll get a laptop with video capability and start doing my own “head shots,” too. I suppose I’ll have to get a black tshirt, some rectangular glasses, and a guitar, though - although your scenery was much nicer…
