How to Use Yahoo Pipes to Build Unique RSS Feed Mashups

adsense project

In the last post in this series I discussed how you can use Web 2.0 properties to build backlinks and in that post I talked about using an RSS feed on those sites to keep them fresh. In this post I give you a video showing how you can create ‘RSS mashups’ which are combined feeds made up of other feeds and ensure these are unique so you can create a different feed for every site that needs one to avoid the duplicate content filter.

The technique uses a service called Yahoo Pipes and as I explain in the video, it sounds and looks far more complicated than it is. When you start to delve into Yahoo Pipes you’ll find you can do a lot with it (such as create translations of a feed into other languages) but for this video I’m just going to show you how to take two or more RSS feeds and merge them into a single feed sorted by date.

This is a fairly technical video and there’s a lot happening on the screen so I had a little difficulty zooming in onto all of the pertinent areas. I wasn’t able to upload it to YouTube as it was too long but the QuickTime version is much bigger and higher quality anyway.

Very cool Caroline. I was wondering what happened to the YP fascination. I was reading about it repeatedly forever, then nothing for MONTHS.

I double thank you for the download option. I most enjoy being able to watch (and re-watch) videos on my time. :)

Perfect timing Caroline, I was just messing with Yahoo Pipes and was not looking forward to “figuring” it all out!

Caroline,

Excellent video.

I haven’t done much with RSS feeds on my site mainly because I didn’t want them to look spammy because I didn’t know what I was doing.

Could you give some examples of where you would post the resultant code in both adsense and regular blogs?

Cool site Caroline.

Gives me something new to look at because, like Mike, I have never heard of Yahoo Pipes before…

@Jeff, you wouldn’t do this to post to a regular blog as this has it’s own feed. I don’t even think it is possible to add an additional feed to a proper blog. These feeds are used to populate sites that support the inclusion of an external feed such as Squidoo or Hubpages. There might be other uses though – it would be interesting to hear how other people have put them to use.

Caroline,

There is an option to create a badge in YP for WP. Placing this code on a post creates a page of constantly updating data that you set up in your pipe.

I’m thinking more in terms of WP blogs used for Adsense only.

@Jeff, ahh I didn’t know you could do that. So yes that would be a great way to keep an AdSense site fresh.

Caroline,

I’m so glad to be able to contribute here.

I have a domain I recently acquired that has had a mashup running on it for over a year. I’ve changed it over to my own hosting from where it was. It generates an unbelievable amount of 404s.

My questions are this: how does Google index sites like this? Am I getting all of these 404s because Google has a year’s worth of content that just got removed? Will Google ever figure it out? I’m talking 1200+ monthly 404s.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Caroline,

Annoyingly I still can’t watch the video – apparently I don’t have the quick time plugin installed and I’m having trouble d/loading it.

Does the end result look anything close to a real article, in the eye of a human reader? Or is it good only for the bot?

Cheers,
Alex

@Jeff, no clue :-) But you should customise your 404 page if you haven’t already so that you can do something useful with that traffic.

@Alex, the end result isn’t an article at all. This has nothing to do with articles. It is a technique for merging one or more RSS feeds into a single one.

Caroline,

I can’t believe I haven’t done this yet. Thanks for the reminder.

Even if it is a relatively new site, all the rest of mine have custom 404 pages.

I’ll get right on it.

Thanks,

Jeff

@Jeff, that is actually a reminder to myself to check mine. I think I did a custom one a looooong time ago but I could probably improve on it now.

Caroline,

You’ll be happy to know I had already made a custom 404 for this site.

The problem is that, at this stage, it’s the spiders that are looking for these pages and not humans. But it doesn’t hurt in case.

Hi Caroline,

Interesting post. Thanks for offering this information. I am surprised that you did not mention Fwicki for RSS mashup. It’s much easier to use, a thousand times faster, and much more powerful. Fwicki not only gives you rss mashup, but the ability to create a customized reader page that performs very well in the search engines…

Not only do you get rss mashup… you get organic traffic referrals from high placement in the SERP’s.

Google this: astronomy mashup

After reading your blog for some time, I am surprised you didn’t know this..
As an avid rss geek, I have to admit I have a decided advantage when using Fwicki. It seems to be the best kept secret on the web. Compared to the power and performance of Fwicki, Yahoo Pipes is LAME!

I want to share an e-book I found when searching for innovative rss stuff. I read the e-book, maybe your readers would appreciate reading it too. This e-book is written by some top rss consultants on the web.. and it is very accurate!

Thanks again for this great blog!
