How to Really Get the Attention of a Blogger

February 9, 2008 Posted under: Make Money Blogging by Caroline Middlebrook

As a blogger, one of your goals should be to network with other bloggers in your niche and get to know them. This can be tricky if the other bloggers are busy or just have a short attention span like I do! I’d like to tell you a little story about one blogger who got my attention in a big way recently…

Why Bother with Other Bloggers?

Before I get on with the story let me just elaborate on why I think you should bother. There is a question I now get asked almost daily – “How do you get traffic?”. I usually just tell people to go read my archives as I have shared all of my strategies in there at one time or another but I can tell you now that the majority of my traffic comes from just one source – other people, in particular, other bloggers!

At the beginning of each month I write a post with all my stats from the previous month and in that post I breakdown where my traffic comes from. With the exception of StumbleUpon traffic, a great big chunk of it comes directly from other blogs who have linked to me in some way. Not only that but getting to know other bloggers has a knock on effect. That StumbleUpon traffic I mentioned comes only when people thumbs up your site – who does that? Well obviously it’s Stumble users but you’ll often find that many of them are also bloggers because bloggers understand the power of SU.

The effect does not end at the direct traffic you get from other blogs either. That traffic comes in the form of inbound links which is the major contributing factor to the authority of your domain which has a massive impact on your search engine rankings. My blog is now a PR5 because other people linked to it and I’m sure that’s one of the reasons that I am getting more search engine traffic now.

But it still doesn’t stop there – there is also the somewhat more intangible benefit of just being buddies with other bloggers. I chat to Josh Spaulding sometimes and ask him for advice on stuff he knows about. Don from Making Sales, Making Money often drops me a note to say hi and that might prompt me to write a commentary about one of his posts. I chat to Yaro Starak now and then about his Blog Mastermind course and the next thing I know, he’s writing about me again. When I did the email campaign for my ebook recently, I had already had prior contact with at least 50 of the bloggers I contacted. Most of them wrote straight back and said “Sure thing Caroline, I’d love to take a look at your book”, or something to that effect…

So Back to my Story…

mike huangMike Huang

Name ring a bell? If you delve into the comments section of my blog then you would have seen Mike’s name pop up rather a lot. I read every single comment that I get so when I start to see the same name pop up time and time again I can’t fail to take notice. Mike Huang has been one of my Top Commenters on my blog for several months now. Scroll down, he’s there right now. You’re slacking Mike, you’re not at the top! Just kidding, he’s a little busy right now :-)

But that’s not all that Mike did. See Mike has a rather nice blog called Blogging Ads and he’s obviously using blog commenting as a strategy to get the attention of other bloggers just like I did. But here’s the thing – other bloggers read blogs too! What does that mean? That means that not only was I seeing Mike’s name all over my own blog but also on all of the blogs that I read! I’ve been a bit slack in my own comments and very often Mike will have commented on a post before I had even read it – this made his name stick out to me.

Next thing I know I’m seeing inbound links come in from Mike’s blog. Now this is another thing that all bloggers will check – everybody wants to know when they are being talked about! I have a Google Alert on my name and a tracker on all links pointing to my blog just so I don’t miss a thing. I certainly couldn’t miss this post which was basically a review of my blog! Not a requested review I might add… it just appeared and I was thrilled to see it! What was great about this post is that Mike linked to several of my posts so I saw a ton of inbound links come in from one source so I couldn’t possibly miss it.

Oh but wait, it doesn’t stop there! Just to make absolutely sure that I knew who he was, he took one final step – he interviewed me! I have been interviewed several times but on some of those occasions I hadn’t heard of the interviewer before the Interview itself so I didn’t pay as much attention. This is a great strategy to get to know somebody, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it myself really.

So there you have it, the end of my story… The lesson to take away from this is that if you feel like you are talking to yourself when you blog then get out there and get involved with other blogs in your niche. Get to know other bloggers, be everywhere, get in their faces and soon enough people will sit up and take notice and you’ll see your blog stats rising. Has this worked for Mike? Well the truth is in the numbers – in a little over three months Mike has built up his subscriber numbers to over 700! I hope this post gives him a few more…

Caroline, you do a lot of work. I guess all the top ranking bloggers hardly sleeps. Bolg is always in mind. How to make something with fun and easiness. That will be interesting to know. May be you can write something on it.

OMGOSH! Thank you so much Caroline! I must admit that I do comment a lot on blogs, but it wasn’t until I realized the true power of commenting after you explained it, that I commented more :)

Anyways, I’m glad I gave you a few more inbound links, but the sad thing is my blog is still PR0. I have no clue what I’m doing wrong for Google to slap me like that, but oh wells :)

I certainly have enjoyed reading your blog since finding it a week ago. I can see the power of commenting on other blogs. I have only had my blog up for about 2-3 weeks now and have noticed that I always get a little bit of traffic each time I comment.

I actually wrote a post about leaving comments. Just so everyone knows…Saying “great job” or “thanks” is not a comment…it’s a complement. Leave something useful and thought provoking. Just imagine that someone had never set eyes on your beautiful blog and all they know about you is from one single comment. Will “great job” make them want to click on your name and head over to you blog. A comment is like a business card. Make it count; Say something thought provoking, intelligent and add to the conversation. I’m sure that Caroline noticed Mike’s comments because they added to the conversation, not just made the comments page longer.

I certainly plan to “bother” plenty of bloggers.

You’re right in the sense that most blog readers can be bloggers themselves. While non-blogger readers are as important, they couldn’t provide benefits like linkbacks and exposures in other blogs (except through comments). Non-bloggers are not that aware of RSS subscription too, which makes bloggers’ attention more rewarding.

The problem lies with the blog subject theme, it’s not easy to appeal to bloggers needs when you have your own niche topic like mine. I did however managed that with some postings by combining ‘corporate’ and ‘blogging’ subjects (and yes, they do garner more attention).

The best way to get the attention of a big-time blogger is to meet them, and give them something of value that they can use…use the old-school way of networking that most corporations still use…buy them a bottle of premium French Cognac! One story about your blog on their blog will be worth it!

Something that I need to do more often in blog commenting. I will say that this tecnique does work but also interviewing too. I seem to get noticed more so when other bloggers notice my interviews , that whole law of association thing. It has helped my networking cirlce a lot. Great post.

Good post and strange timing as I was thinking last night about posting this same topic on my mine. I recently started my first blog and this site and your ebook has been a great help and inspiration in getting started. I will be ‘bothering’ a few bloggers from now on.

Mike sounds like a pretty intelligent guy! I do know the power of commenting and linking to other blogs to get noticed, but the truth is, I’ve been slacking on it and not commenting like I should. And also when I do my weekly link roundups, it’s often the same blogs I’m linking to. I really need to get out there and discover new blogs to comment and link to if I’m going to see NEW readers. Thanks Caroline, and keep up the great work here!

It is almost instinct for each one of us to feel an outpouring interest to someone who is talking about us. If I want Caroline Middlebrook to talk about me, I will write something about her, not necessarily about her blog, but it can be about her writing style.

Caroline that is another good post for people to learn from.

I was wondering if people comment on their niche only or many niches to get attention. I have been commenting on a few blogs that would fit into three niche categories that I feel my blog may benefit. Time will tell.

Thanks.

Getting the attention of a big blogger is really difficult these days. The only way to really get their attention is have your name constantly appear wherever you go. You just have to stumble their pages, comment on their blogs, interview them, guest post on their blogs, comment on blogs and forums they frequent. If you do all this then they’re bound to notice…

It’s all about perseverance really…

Caroline, I have been reading your blog for quite some time now, but have never actually commented. I think you hit the nail on the head here.

Starting conversations with other bloggers is what it’s all about. I just recently started a blog and I have been trying to interact in discussions more and more. I have been receiving a flood of traffic because of this and I think your right. Blog authors have a deep respect and appreciation for having other blog authors take time to involve themselves in their world. Thanks for reinforcing this important concept!

@Shams, actually no I don’t – check out one of my recent posts about how hard you have to work at your own business and you’ll see that I really don’t work very hard at all these days.

@Mike, yeah I noticed the PR0, no idea whats up with that.

@Random Thinker, yup thats right – I’ll actually delete one liners that just say “great post” or something to that effect.

@Black Zedd, yes I suppose within the ‘make money’ niche a great deal of blog readers will also be blog owners and that not be quite as true within other niches but on the other hand blogs are so prolific these days that I’m sure every blog has at least some readers that are also bloggers themselves.

@Money Never Sleeps, haha yeah I’ll just hop on over to Australia and the US to deliver a few bottles of Cognac to all the big bloggers out there :) Hmm commenting is cheaper…

@Tay, interesting point on the weekly roundups. I noticed a few weeks ago that I was doing that too so recently I’ve been making a point of picking out one or two blogs that I haven’t looked at in a while on the hunt for a nice post to link to. I’m also now linking to some of my readers posts via the CommentLuv plugin to get more variety.

@Cornelius, personally I comment only within my own niche as there are just too many blogs already that I don’t have time for more but in other niches that are narrower its a good strategy to branch out into related niches.

Hi Caroline,

Much food for thought here, thanks for this great information.

I’ve actually been happily surprised by the number of inbound links I get to my blog from those that are NOT within my own niche.

There are far more bloggers that I have had the privilege to get to know on a more personal basis simply from commenting on their blogs that have nothing at all to do with my own niche.

It’s been a real struggle to find blogs within my niche to link to and network with because too many of them are too busy running meme’s to actually write some good content. But I’m still searching for more.

@Lin, having looked at your blog that surprises me as I would have thought there would have been a lot of vocal bloggers in that niche. I know there are a ton of parenting blogs out there, perhaps not so many about relationships.

Thanks for taking a look Caroline. Perhaps I’ve been looking in the wrong places for quality blogs about parenting and relationships. I will definitely continue searching, since I’ve become rather bored with those I’ve mentioned above.

Thumbs up for mike, for achiving a great reputation and letting us realise what we are missing. Since I’ve been busy with my affiliate stuffs I virtually have stopped commenting on other blogs which had put me into a feeling like I’m shouting outer space!

Well I always learn my lessons the hard way and still struggling to squeeze out some time so I can comment on other blogs, so here I go I start from your blog. Hey btw caroline I was wondering what plugin are you using that fetches the last post and puts a link with the comments?
