How to Install a FavIcon on a WordPress Blog

April 14, 2008 Posted under: Blogging by Caroline Middlebrook

In this post, I’ll be showing you how to install a FavIcon onto your WordPress blog using a cool new plugin. This is my first ever video post, be gentle :-)

What is a FavIcon?

A FavIcon is the little graphic that is displayed to the left of a URL in the address bar of your browser and in the tab displays in the case of Firefox and Internet Explorer. Many sites just have a generic icon and in my case I have been using the default BlueHost icon for 8 months which is a bit slack really! A custom icon can help your site stand out from the crowd a little.

The MaxBlogPress Plugin

The plugin that makes this so easy is called MaxBlogPress and I was told about it by the author recently. That page is a little bit like a sales letter, showing you not only how to install the plugin but doing a very good job of exaplaining exactly why you would want to.

Here is my video showing you how to use the plugin, it’s very easy:

One thing I would like to note is that the author has done a pretty good job of monetizing this plugin. As I mention in the video, when you first activate the plugin you will be asked to register it which signs you up to an email list which you then have to confirm your subscription to. Upon clicking the confirmation link you are then directed to a page that is trying to sell you some blog traffic package. You’ll need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to select “no thanks”.

I’m not entirely sure what I think of this. On the one hand, I don’t like those offer pages - I think they are sleazy but on the other hand I think software developers often go unrewarded so its perfectly justifiable to want to generate some income from a useful plugin such as this. I suppose I would have preferred to not see the offer page and instead have it pushed upon me more gently via the autoresponder later on.

Anyway, enough of my rants, this plugin offers the easiest way that I know of to create a FavIcon for your WordPress blog.

Why go to the bother of a plugin, why not just FTP a favicon.ico file to your blog directory? You can use a free favicon generator online like http://www.html-kit.com/e/favicon.cgi, instead of cluttering up Wordpress with more plugins.

That looks pretty handy, I have been using a website that basically transforms any picture you have into a favicon, and then you upload it to your site/blog and plug in the right places, but the problem obviously is you’d have to edit the index.php file to plug it in and edit a couple of other things. So this looks like a cool plug in, I shall give it a go.

I thought you might find an article I wrote a while ago about creating your own favicon. It goes into detail with some instructions in photoshop, and where to place the code after the favicon has been created and a suitable host is found.

the link is here: How to Make Your Own Favicon Using Photoshop

I’m not sure how this would work with wordpress, as I have never actually used that format. Having said that, this method should work with any platform that gives you access to the source code of the template. If you do try it let me know how it goes for you.

Hi Caroline,

I’m using this guy’s plugin called MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer. It adjusts the ping algorithm of WordPress to perform better. One thing it does is make WordPress not to send out a ping after your editing of a post or a page.

This plugin also has a registration requirement (I think all of them have) with the sales page in the midst of it and everything.

Since registering I’ve been receiving a newsletter, which is mainly affiliate promotions, but some of it are new plugin updates and other news.

The bottom line is that their plugins are great value, and one thing that newsletter does is reminding me of the developer and keeping me visit their site for new plugins — unlike other plugins that I install and never really know (or care) who’s behind it. I’d drop the sales page during registration though…

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Caroline,
I am back! This is two. Am I gaining on the ‘TC’ yet? ;-)

Great Plugin! Great Video! No one would have known it was first one had you not said anything. I watched the Video after reading the post and that got me going. Directions on his site were pretty good too!

Just getting my feet wet, and I had just put Sitemap plugin on, so I was not completely green. Took me about 20 minutes to get it working!

“I don’t like those offer pages” I have got so I scroll down to the bottom line and usually opt out, tho there are times that the copy is good enough and I invest in their OTO. I have a work around on that too that works most of the time. Nevertheless, the Laborer is worthy of his wages. Lk. 10:7; So, I at least let them put me on their list and as Alex said, you get the up dates and I can always Un-subscribe later.

Oh BTW Caroline, it is called a “Squeeze Page’ not a ‘Sleaze page’! ;-) Just kiddin.

@Charlie, I did not have to edit anything and if I would have had to, I probably still be there! ;-) Pretty easy, even for me.

@ Alex, Agree completely and yes! A first time for me to see one on an installation. … “Nothing ventured, nothing gained!”

@Dennis, Mine did not show on IE Either. Billy probably has that wired in, so his always shows!

@all, Just getting things to start to work, I would appreciate you to look at my site and suggest 3 or 4 things to change, add and/or delete. I am trying my hand at writing Advertorials. http://dpgatten.com/

Thanks again for the heads up on this one. I shall return!

@Richard, because then you have to have your graphic in the form on an .ICO file. This plugin allows you to just upload an existing graphic.

@Dennis, good question, not sure :/

Thanks for the write-up. I was using this plug-in. I don’t chose too any more. When updates are issued you have to go through the same email registration and huge sales page OTO production as you did the first time. When I tried to sit through the nonsense several times again updating multiple blogs the plug-in registration refused to work unless I made separate emails for every blog. Silly.

It’s intrusive, in my view, to require folks to register and continually re-register just to force them to read lengthy sales pages.

Here’s a very simple way to make and install a favicon with no nonsense … if you have an image already it takes about two seconds plus time to connect via FTP:
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/make-a-favicon/
I’m not trying to start a war, use the MaxBlog plugin if you wish, but it is certainly ovekill for a simple task like this.

You can also put an image in the Blog-directory and upload a Code :

“link href=’http://Blog-URL/favicon.ico’ rel=’shortcut icon’ type=’image/ico’/”

this works in my Blog also.

Caroline;

Cool find. I think there are a lot of people out there that are not comfortable editing their header.php file but would be OK installing a plugin. For me, I would rather fire up vi and edit the file…but that is one of the great things about WordPress. There are about 1000 ways to do everything.

Regards,
Mark

@Mark - that’s also one of the most frustrating things about WP…..like having 37 different people make 46 different versions of the same plugin.

I guess its all how ya look at it :-)

@Dave, thanks very much for the info! To require multiple registrations and several of them is very silly indeed though I do wonder if the author is aware of that… I might mail him and ask.

@Lernen, thanks! I didn’t know you could do that - I will try it out on my Stumble Rush blog.

Nice informative video, although I was curious about your voice :-)

I felt inspired by you to make a favicon tutorial myself as well which I posted on my blog today. This tutorial also shows how to do it with plain Html pages and PhpBB forums.

My Wordpress keeps messing with my text make up though…don’t know how to solve this problem. I did not have this problem on 2.3. Hence, the post is not as it should be…awful since I am a Desktop Publisher!

Hmm by the way, saw a youtube video about you but in a ‘negative’ way…I am not going to post that video here, but if you are interested I can mail it to you.

I am pretty sure you already know about its existence though.

One should not give any attention to such things, but just to let you know.

Hi Caroline,

It’s more of an audio thing. Was hoping to see you in action, but I guess this will have to do :p
You have a great voice for audio posts, reminds me of watching a national geographic program or something.

I agree with the first comment posted here, uploading a ico file is easier (to me).

National Geographic! LOL. That is spot on, except maybe BBC.

Intrepid field reporter Caroline is between the hedges in the English countryside stalking the elusive and feared Favicon. Native to Scottland, the red-breasted Favicon migrated to England at the request of the Queen in 1738.

Next week on the BBC: Caroline explores the mating habits of the Favicon.

@Stefson, yeah I’ve only got a headset, no web camera yet! Plus you know doing one of those videos would require a good hair day, and those are kinda rare :p

Caroline, thank you for writing about my plugin.

It seems there is some misunderstanding about the plugin registration process.

Here is a post which will clear all the doubts and misunderstanding about the plugin:
