Ebook Project: Submitting the Ebook to Directories

Free v Paid Ebooks

Regular readers of this blog will know that I have not had very much success making money online so far. I was very slow to monetize this blog and it’s only been these last couple of months that have seen an income starting to trickle in.

As a result, I know that there are a lot of people out there rooting for me and urging me to create something to sell. My decision to release this ebook as a free book has caused quite a lot of people to encourage me to try and sell it instead.

However, just because the book is free does not mean that it is not making money for me! I did mention this before when I first released the book but I don’t think I am getting the point across. If somebody orders a domain via my affiliate link for BlueHost which is embedded in the book, I earn $65 commission which is a nice payout. If I had charged for the book I doubt it would have been much more than around $10-12 so I would have needed to sell 5-6 copies of the book to generate the same income as an affiliate sale.

By making the book free, I can encourage mass distribution and hopefully get it in front of far more eyeballs than would have been possible had I charged a cover price. Hopefully, some of the places to which I can upload the book will continue to distribute it for years to come.

I actually have LOTS of ideas for how to distribute this ebook and throughout the week I am going to be blogging about these ideas in detail. A great many of them are only possible because the book is free and would not be available to me if I was charging for the book.

To start things off for today, I am looking for places where I can directly upload the PDF file or submit the download link, in particular directories of ebooks.

Ebook Submission Sites

My first port of call was a nice post by my good friend Sean from Warrior Blog about writing and submitting your own ebook. In his post he lists 17 places on the Internet where you can submit your Ebook. That post was written in August 2007 so some of the links no longer worked for me but some did and I have also found other directories with a bit of surfing. Below are two lists – ones that I used, and ones that I didn’t.

Sites That I Submitted To

One thing that I noticed while doing this is that many of the places I submitted to did not want a link directly to the PDF and instead wanted a link to a download page. This gives me the added benefit of a free backlink to this blog, handy :-)

Sites That I Did NOT Submit To

Some of these directories will only list the ebooks in return for a backlink that is on the download page. I want to keep my actual download page clutter free so this silly restriction annoys me. I am quite happy to provide a backlink here but only one directory allowed me to specify a backlink URL that was different to the submitted URL.

If anybody knows other directories or similar sites to submit ebooks to then please let me know in the comments. Please don’t list forums or other types of sites as I will be covering those kinds of marketing opportunities later in the week.

Carolyn, I’m putting together an ebook for a very specific niche, and it will be a great
education for me to watch your progress. I appreciate the fact that you are sharing
this with your readers.

Good stuff. I especially like how, isntead of brainlessly utilizing every directory, you focused on priorities to root out those whose requisites just got in your way. It’s too easy to succumb to every demand for an extra link.

Like Kay I am in the final stages of my own ebook and your journey to this point has been really helpful. I appreciate that you have shared all the steps you’ve taken and evaluated each as well. I had not thought about embedding affiliate links and I can see how that works. Great idea.

Caroline,

I think giving away the ebook for free is a great idea; I’m sure it’s going to help alot of newbies out. With mass distribution, all you need to hope for is 2 signups for hosting in the process, and you’ve broken past the $100/day mark, building your readership and reputation in the process to boot :)

Good luck!

@Mikael, thanks for the list, I’ll have a trawl through that a bit later.

@Kang, mmm yeah 2 signups a day would be nice but that would not be sustainable as I don’t think an ebook receives a steady number of downloads. If I continued to release books on a regular basis then over time it may be possible to build to that level.

Actually Caroline, there’s a way to get past the backlink required thing. Just search Google for refferer cloaking and then use php to show the links to the directories to only people (and bots) coming from the directories. This way your normal visitors and search engines never see the link. Still, the directories do recognize that the link exists.

Hehe, yes a bit evil but works perfectly…

OK, Caroline I wrote a review on my Local Business Online Web Site.

And, I submitted the article to BloggingZoom. Wait till you see how much traffic you get from BloggingZoom being involved.

@Ruchir, hmm cloaking is not really my thing, bit too underhand for my liking :-) I’m not all that bothered.

@IsMyLocation, thanks for the plugs, much appreciated!

@Ana, you’re welcome :)

Other than submitting to the ebook directories, posting in forums and blogs with a backlink to the download page works wonders as well!

Nice Ebook Directory

Ebooks are great marketing tools aswell as sources of information. You may be able to submit your site to one that I use, Ebook Directory

Ebook Directories are a dime a dozen these days. The problem is that most don’t take submissions anymore. Others don’t have a category for your ebook, and still others are very limited. For instance if you have a paid ebook your options are very limited because now you cannot get yours listed in a free directory and vice versa.

As far as having to provide a backlink to a directory, there are so few quality directories that have static backlinks back to your site, if they ask you to link to them it’s a good idea or your options are very few if any.

That’s why I started my own directory, because I am sick of the options. Free for all who want to list. I do ask for a backlink but my directory will provide a static link to your site so it’s only fair. I link directly to your download page. Unlike many other directories including most listed above that don’t take submissions anymore, we want your listing!

You can find my directory here:
