Ebook Project: Miscellaneous Marketing Ideas

January 10, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

Now that I have released my ebook, the majority of my time will now be taken up with marketing activities. A big chunk of that will involve the email campaign that I described a couple of days ago but when I get bored of sending email there’s lots of other interesting things I can do to try and promote the book.

File Sharing & Torrents

In the bad old days of the Internet downloading was very much a one-way affair with the majority of downloading occuring from large download sites. Now this is still a major part of the Internet and I have already started to submit my ebook to some of these places.

However, in recent years peer to peer networks have become much more common. What this means is that individual people share files from their own computer and networking software allows them to be shared over the Internet. One of the most popular of these is the Bit Torrent network. So this is one possibility that I am going to look into but I’m not sure if this will allow ‘mass’ downloading or just one or two here and there.

‘Selling’ on eBay

I was given a rather neat idea by Internet Junkie who suggested that I sell the book on eBay for 1c. This is so cheap that it is effectively free and of course the big advantage with this method is that eBay has a massive audience so all I have to do is put up and manage the auction.

The difficulty is that a traditional auction is a one-time affair so ideally I would find a way to put up multiple auctions in an automated fashion. It’s been a while since I’ve used eBay properly but I’m pretty sure there are lots of tools around to help with this. Could be the subject of an interesting tutorial…

Another eBay idea that I found recently is to buy those packs of ebooks that have resale rights then unpack each book and repack it with a copy of mine inside it as a bonus. Then re-sell the pack on eBay. It’s a clever idea but probably one I wouldn’t use as it feels somewhat spammy and like too much effort for the results.

Web 2.0 Promotion

I started this blog after taking part in the 30 Day Challenge. One thing I learned from that challenge is the power of web 2.0 sites that allow you to host your own content. For example, Squidoo, Hubpages, Scribd and so on (there’s dozens of sites like this).

What these sites allow you to do is own a little piece of the Internet on which you can create content and of course link out to a site of your choice. The way in which I would use this strategy is to take small sections of the book and turn them into articles and post one on each of these sites with a download link to the book.

What makes this strategy powerful is that many of the sites themselves carry a lot of favour with Google so they tend to rank well in the search engines. To make the most of this strategy I would need to do a little keyword research and try to work the articles around the best keywords.

If I put up some Squidoo lenses etc then I’ll post the links here so you can see how I have used them.

YouTube Videos

Now this is a strategy that I could have put to use earlier on if I have planned the book a little better but I was not in a good frame of mind when I wrote the first draft so I didn’t think of it.

In hindsight, much of the content of the book would have been suitable to video tutorials as well as in the written form. So I could have made a bunch of videos and uploaded them to YouTube tagged with approprorpiate keywords.

This strategy is just a variation of the Web 2.0 one as YouTube videos tend to rank extremely highly in Google (hmm I wonder why lol!) as long as they are well tagged. My problem though is that if I wanted to do this now I would have to start over creating a newniche site to make the videos.

Article Marketing

A standard practice with many Internet Marketers is to write a few short articles and publish them to directories such as EzineArticles and promote some kind of resource in the Author BIO box. Now that I have my own ebook to give away this is something I could do.

Similar to the Squidoo lenses I could write short articles taken from sections of the book and at the end of the article encourage the reader to read more by downloading the book for free. I think this would be a very valuable strategy to use for several reasons:

  • It gets more downloads to the ebook
  • Each article gets a backlink back to my blog
  • It gets my name out there and makes me a bit more famous lol!

Next Steps

I’m holiday this week so at the moment all I’m doing is planning my work for next week and documenting my plans :-) Here’s my intentions for next week:

  • Email relevant bloggers as per email campaign
  • Write around half a dozen articles and some variations on them
  • Build a Squidoo Lens, Hub Page and so on to house the articles
  • Submit the articles to the top few directories
  • Submit to file sharing sites
  • Try and build a torrent for the book and distribute that
  • I might possibly try a video tutorial and submit it to YouTube
  • Setup an eBay auction and try to automate it

That lot should keep me busy. Any more idea on ways in which I could promote this ebook?

I think a video tutorial would be good for promotion and people would definately link to it. I’d also contact hubpages to see if you could get the page ‘added’ to their monthly flagship hubpages, as this would create a bit more attraction to you.

1. Start your affiliate system NOW.
2. You can install jam[dot]jrox[dot]com.
3. But at the least, start your affiliate system today.
4. You will be happy you did in good time later on.
5. The earlier, the better. If only I was told earlier…
6. Remain blessed and a blessing.
7. Regards, Your Friend –OSF.

If you really want to get a penny for each you could set it up as a buy-it-now or bulk auction. If I remember correctly, those can have quantities of items greater than one.

Caroline,

Wonderful post! Readers who take copious notes will have the equivalent of an online marketing course, for free!

Don’t forget pressexposure.com, the press release arm of ezinearticles. Or prweb.com.

Also, since your book is not a biz opp, you may do well with solo ads. Biz opportunists like useful tools. Having a good guide for a useful tool should get some attention.

Finally, do some guest posting. The extra traffic may help, although it’s not necessarily going to be targeted (depending on the topic of your post :) )

Cheers,

Mitch

Hi Caroline,

Thanks again for your comment on StumbleUpon, and I’m glad you liked my post - “5 steps to get Top Search Engine Rankings”

I think it’s great that you have launched an ebook as one of your marketing tools. I also think the marketing ideas you have blogged about are great, and will definitely use them in my blog promotion efforts.

A suggestion for a future post would probably be a list of Web 2.0 sites that tend to receive greater favour from Google. I’ve noticed that these sites (such as Blogger.com and Ezinearticles.com) tend to get visits from the Google Bot more often than others.

Thanks!

Cheers,
Samantha

Congratulations on your eBook Caroline

I’m Looking forward to reading it after the 30DC.
I’m suffering information overload right now with the course and so much fresh data coming in so, i hope to read it next.

One great little tool you may like to use for posting your eBook’s on ebay would be Poster Toaster. I have used before and it was very useful. It also schedules listings for free and it could be just what you are looking for.

As for your actual listings on Ebay you could use the Buy it now feature as mentioned above. But don’t forget that the cost of listing your eBook will be more than 0.01p and you may be out of pocket doing it that way.

It could also be viewed as similar to doing a Google PPC (Pay per click) campaign, which might be another option if you feel more adventurous and willing to pay for advertising. It may also be more effective than eBay and cost you the same.

For me, if i was to use ebay and i wanted free advertising i would spread some ebay 0.01 auctions mixed in with some 0.99p Buy it now listings. This way the listing fees would hopefully break an even spread and shift quite a few eBooks in the process.

One other option which i think was mentioned above was to add your book to an affiliate site such as Clickbank and let others market it for you.

The click bank technique may cost a little bit to get you set up with but it’s certainly a skill worth learning if someone enjoys writing eBooks and intends to leave the marketing side for others.

Finally, one last informative idea which just came to me right now and it may be of benefit to you. I’ll try to explain it as best as i can but it is a little bit subjective.

This idea is actually a mistake on my behalf, but for every negative there exists an opposite so it seems.

If you look at my website Cosmedic Jetaways i have one of my pages that gives away Free eBooks.

Now, I didn’t think much about it at the time. The story was i found some ebooks with resale rights on my computer, and i wanted to give them away for free to anyone surfing my site.

However, in my ignorance because i submitted the sitemap to google, and that particular sitemap had the “Free ebooks” page included. Well, this caused the spiders to index my “Free ebooks” page in it’s Google search engines.

Great i hear you say? traffic glorious traffic!

Well it could be good news for you, but it was quite the opposite for me.

You see there are of people out there looking for free books online and not just normal everyday surfers. Some want free content to add to their sites to drive more visitors in. And others are big sites shifting tons of data and using a lot of bandwidth in the process but are hungry for more.

Approximately 10 days after submitting my sitemap to Google i found about 8 links in my stats indicating other sites linking to my free eBooks…

At first i thought WOW! organic links. Amazing!

But then i realized Oh! they are actually just stealing my eBooks and have no inbound links to my actual pages at all.

So, after investigating a little more i found that the sites were obviously giving away free stuff and had decided to copy my direct URL “free ebook’s” link into their download link so that my bandwidth will be consumed for their mass download benefits.

Yep, rather a sneaky way of doing things, but i did let Google index the page in the first place and thats just like leaving my front door wide open.

So, to cut a long babble short…

You can use this little technique to increase the viral potential of your ebook, and it costs nothing…

That technique in simpler terms would be to make a Site map that links to a page called “Free eBooks” and send it off to Google.

Don’t forget to name your sub domain page “Free ebooks” too, or any similar keywords that will bring the sharks in. Then place your masterpiece download links inside, perhaps even a nice landing page and a few other books of yours included, but don’t forget to emphasize on the words FREE.

There are big sites out there who are looking for content to steal. Unfortunately web masters like me Doh! who forget to disable indexing on certain pages can serve them up rather a nice meal.

And perhaps they can serve you nicely too with a little web 2.0 majic included i’m sure you could reach some big numbers.

I hope some of this info will be of benefit to someone even if it wasn’t for me, but don’t forget:

For any Negative there exists a Positive,
And one never exists without the other.
So welcome them when they find you and use them wisely…

Ciao for now!
Daniel

@Olakunle, my affiliate system for what? I am not yet selling anything…

@Aaron, ahh that’s good to know, thanks for the tip.

@Mitchell, ahh yes I suppose a Press Release would be appropriate to announce the release of the ebook. I’ll add that to my list of marketing activities. Thanks.

@Daniel, can you market a free book on ClickBank? If not then that will be something I look into for the next book. The free ebooks story is quite amusing, I will have to keep an eye on my bandwidth usage over the coming weeks and months and see how it is affected.

Thanks for mentionning my idea; I am having problems downloading your Ebook so I did not read it yet. For some reason Adobe Acrobat is not letting me do this so I’ll get to it when I get to it!

I can recommend Squidoo + ezinearticles as a very strong SERP strategy, plus I just like Squidoo. Part of being a Seth junkie, I suppose. I don’t get nearly as much traffic to my one attempt at a hub page, but then again I don’t put as much work into it.

Squidoo + ezinearticles works especially well if you use the 30DC keyword research approach, which was, I felt, the most valuable thing in 30DC.

Some folks do extremely well on Squidoo with affiliate products, so I think it would work awfully nicely to a) build your list and b) sell an info product (for more than a penny) :) when you’re ready. If you build a passionate, well-written Squidoo lens and give it a little SEO attention, I suspect you’ll do well with it.

January 13, 2008

@Sonia, yes that’s what I most liked about 30DC too. And you know even though I am giving the book away free, I still think I can build a list because as I mentioned in another post, I’m having issues keeping people updated so I can have an email list that people can join to be notified when the book is updated.

Some very good potins and tosn of useful informations, i lov evideo marketing cause it sfre and dont require massive time.

Selling eBooks on eBay is typically done with these two things in mind. First, to build up positive feedback for both the seller and buyer’s accounts as cheaply as possible. Second, to gain additional sales with affiliate offers and/or up-sell offers built into the book.

Selling the eBook itself needs to be looked at as advertising, not a profit making exercise itself. It’s like a grocery store selling crackers at a loss for a penny in the hope you’ll buy a slab of their overpriced cheese in the next display case to go with it. You have to be well positioned to convert your affiliate and up-sell offers to make money doing it.

Caroline Middlebrook
January 14, 2008

@Frank, well I should be covered on both those angles. The book has affiliate links in it which is the revenue generator and I already have an eBay account in good standing from when I had a little eBay addiction a few years back!
