Do You Fall For These Make Money Online Myths?

I never am amazed about the misconceptions people have about making money online. I bought into one of them just a few years ago. With so much misleading information, everyone can fall victim, especially when he is just getting started.

However, what amazes me is the fact that some people gave up too soon, or at other times, they kept doing the same thing, wasted ten thousands of dollars worth of information products before they realized they were taking the wrong path.

This article contains information that I wish someone would have written. It should have saved at least two years of my struggle, not to mention the money and effort put into the wrong direction.

So without further ado, here are the myths, busted.

1. Make money online is easy

This is perhaps the biggest myth of all. Many of the so called “gurus” use very strong and aggressive words to sell their products. Hyping up the e-book or home study course certainly sells. And that also accounts for why people actually think it is possible to earn “millions of dollars online in six months, starting from scratch without any experience.”

Don’t get me wrong, it is possible to do so once you are at their level, but it certainly involved at least a few bruises on the shoulders when they were getting started.

Making money online itself is not a myth though but like any kind of business, it requires efforts on your part to make it work.

2. The key is in finding the “magic button”

Countless people think Internet marketers who are selling e-books hold back the magic button and that prevents them from making money online overnight.

Remember I told you I was a victim of one of the myths? This was it.

This myth is responsible for millions of dollars of wasted purchases (wasted for the consumers, at least). This myth keeps the victims in a circle seeking for the magic button — and for that reason, keep buying — until they break out forcefully.

I admit it was hard, especially because I was (and still am) such an information junkie.

People purchase e-books over e-books, join membership sites, sign up for courses and attend seminars expecting to find the magic button. The thing is, such button doesn’t exist.

Succeeding in online business is about taking action in the right direction and persistence. Blogs, web sites and information products are there just to guide you through the process.

3. All you need is one hit

Newbie marketers who create a product wish to approach big names. “If only (mention someone with a big list) promotes my product, I will be rich.”

At least that was their thought. All they need to achieve is one big hit before they are financially independent.

This is a huge misconception. Certainly teaming up with big names will help, but at the end of the day, whoever is able to provide the right product to their customers win. In a niche that I’m actively involved in, getting a big name to promote my product generated less sales than I expected, mainly because my product was targeting the wrong group of people it didn’t match his list members.

4. Create it and they will come

It used to be almost this easy. You put up some web pages, submit the site to search engines, and then a few weeks later you would see traffic coming from search engines. If you offered a product to sell, perhaps you got one or two sales immediately with little or no promotion at all.

Nowadays, it doesn’t work that way. The cost of reaching your prospects is much higher. If you publish a web site, chances are those pages will be buried just like a drop of water in the ocean. The only way to make your content stand out is by promoting it. Promotion requires you to invest money or put effort into it.

It is still possible to build an online business, just that you need to have a clear strategy and plan or you may end up wasting your time.

5. Anyone can make money without some skills

A subscriber of my list once wrote me about her excitement of quitting her day job to pursue an online venture. This news was exciting to her, but I was worried more than anything else (not that I wasn’t happy for her).

The problem is, she knew nothing about online business at all. She has no skill beyond browsing and reading emails. An e-book she bought just a week ago told her she could earn six figure income in a few months. And she got three months of saving in the bank, so that was the right decision, wasn’t it?

She learned it the hard way that it was the worst decision she had ever made. The dream of working from home and live in the lifestyle that you can only dream about can be a reality thanks to the online business. However, it is also important to be realistic.

Business is a business. It is still a business. Setting the right expectation from the start helps you anticipate things as they appear.

6. You only need this (or soon-to-be-launched) e-book

If you read in public forums people were talking about one product was just a rehash of old information, the product owner wasn’t always the one to blame. Often, the customers expect to find all the answers in one e-book — that costs $7, I might add.

Building a business is about satisfying a need with a good product or service. If you summarize any business, it is really that simple.

There certainly is a reason many marketers who have been there and done it tell very similar things over and over again. And if you guess because it works, you are right.

One e-book may give a bit of twist to the old information that the marketers believe to be the missing link. Readers who have not yet been exposed to such information may find it very useful and actually succeed after applying that information. On the other hand, those complainers skim through the information, think they’ve known it all, never bother to try again because they have failed once.

Many people already have the necessary knowledge to build a successful business online, but they keep looking for the next big thing. This group of marketers usually believe in the “magic button” myth too.

7. You can start with one hour a week

If you have been following the make money niche for a day, you should have found products that promise high income with little or no work.

The truth is this: no one will ever make money that easily, even the product owner. He still has to put hours into creating a product, writing sales copy and setting up payment processing.

When it comes to product creation, speed matters a lot. If you spend one hour a week, it would take years before it is ready for launch in which case it will already be obsolete.

Here’s a rule of thumb. If a product sounds too good to be true, most likely it is.

Conclusions

Just like a brick-and-mortar business, online business is also about satisfying a demand.

No one is going to throw their hard earned money away but unfortunately people — especially newbies — still think magic actually happens online.

If you’re not on your way to making money online, you may find that you fall for one of the myths above. Don’t let a false believe keep you from achieving your dream.

You may be surprised that success is as simple as taking the right actions and avoiding those myths. After reading this article, you may feel discouraged. Don’t be. It is the intention of this article to help you avoid the pitfalls and become successful quicker.

Making money online is entirely possible. It just requires time and persistent effort on your part. And if you ask me, the fact that I can set my own schedule, be my own boss and working from home (or wherever your favorite place) is really something worth pursuing, not to mention the potential of earning more than average salary.

I believe you will agree. The question is, will you take the challenge?

Thanks for keeping it real Caroline. When it comes to internet marketing work is a 4 letter word. It’s much easier to sell the dream that making money is some kind of automated secret system which you can buy.

Few want to hear that marketing online, requires a specific skill set, takes time to learn as well as time. If it were as fast and easy as many suggest everyone who tried it would be rich overnight.

Keep telling the truth and selling real honest information not a bunch of over hyped schlock.

It’s not easy to do anything well. That’s true of having a good website or of making lots of cash. There is a lot of information out there about the easy way to this or that. That’s rare. It usually requires a well-known person who enters blogging or a person who comes up with a great and unique idea. If you’re first to a niche or keyword demographic then the money may flow. If not, hard work it is.

Caroline – I’m pleased you did a post relating to the misconceptions on make money online – It’s something that needs to be discussed.

You’re right how people get this view on how they are going to make XXXX amount of dollars in 3 months when really it’s not realistic unless you are already experienced and have the right tools at your disposal. Making money online is Hard, and takes time to build your business to the point it eventually becomes profitable.

Note I didn’t write this post guys, Hendry Lee did so give him the credit :-)

@Gennaro, I think making money can become ‘easy’ once you’ve laid the groundwork. For example, if you have been in business a few years and you have built an email list of a few hundred thousand prospects and then you run a promo to that list, you’ll make some easy money. But people forget the years of hard work that went into building that list and maintaining a good relationship with it.

Hendry Lee
February 19, 2009

@Gennaro, Caroline says it very well. All requires groundwork. People who are able to find the right niche spend a lot of time to do that. Anyone who have ever researched a niche know how hard it can be without the right information.

With that, imagine being the first blogger about rose gardening. No articles to refer and link to, nothing to rebut or expound, no peer to talk to, etc, etc. Suddenly that becomes harder than when you come last.

Every coin has two sides. It’s important to see both sides. It helps me set the right expectation and face reality. I guess it may help you too.

wondering why’re you asking for an email address for a free e-book without saying what you plan to do with that email address?

Giving something in return for an email address is NOT really free, is it? Free would be letting people download a pdf or link to the pages of the book on your site, or whatever…

handing over my email in that context seems to me a form of information bartering and without any disclosure I can’t tell if it’s worth it, so, sorry, but no is my email address under this comment…

Gennaro
February 19, 2009

@Caroline and @Hendry Lee

That’s true about the groundwork or foundation. It usually takes a bit of time and hard work to get there though. Same is true with a traditional brick and mortar business. After building a good foundation, the money can flow in easily. You can hire management and work fewer hours (depending on the business). It’s likely quicker online and most definitely requires a lot less capital, but both require smart approachs and work. Usually.

There is a lot to learn when a person first starts out to make money on line. It takes time to learn those things. But it is possible!

Marketing no matter what the product is selling the dream. I saw a McDonlads ad that showed a mother having a special day with her daughter, selling the idea that McDonalds will help you build better relationships.

There is a lot of really great data out there on making money on line. The key is to be able to pick through the data and find what works for you.

I follow Caroline because she speaks to me. I like her style, I like the fact that I can see that she is using what she is teaching.

@Sheila, actually I don’t think there’s all that much to learn – it just takes time to put it into practice. Building a list takes time, building niche sites takes time, getting search engine traffic takes time etc. The learning can be fairly quick but there’s a lot of work to do before serious money comes in.

Hi

Newbies will blindly buy product after product trying to find the ‘magic button” as mentioned in Hendry’s post. The latest are the so called “cash sucking” ready made websites which you can buy. I have bought a couple and I am sharing my experiences so that others may not lose their hard earned money.

At the end of the day, its your job to drive traffic to the purchased website. Some sellers may give you a few tips on how to get traffic. That’s all.
You will not have full control over such websites. Some of them will have undisclsoed add-on costs and you end up paying much more than what was originally advertised. The seller invariably hides behind an auto responder and will never respond to your email queries. The seller from whom I bought a website remains silent on my refund request even though he had adveristed unconditional refund guarantee. They will advertise personal telephone numbers, but when you call those numbers, you will hear only recorded messages.

I hope others who have had similar experiences share it

Caroline Middlebrook
February 22, 2009

@eric, there was once a time when you could ‘build it and they would come’ and some people think that the hard part is getting the website setup so they buy a ready-made one in the hopes that it will make them money. But these days a site is completely lost until it gets traffic and that is where the real work is.

Excellent post! Newbies get suckered into believing making money online is easy.Well, the reality is that it often takes a lot more time to get the ball rolling.Personally, I still make 12 hour days marketing online.

Internet marketing is not hard but it’s not easy. I get really annoyed when people say that you don’t need to know the technical sides of things, yes that is partly true but then your always going to rely on someone right? How can you ever be efficient?

Hi Hendry,
I agree with most of what you have said, but I must say 2 things.

1) I feel deflated after reading your post, because you make it sound impossible. I know that wasn’t your attention, but the difference between reality and motivation is a thin line.
So I’d like to replace your article with 1 line…
“anything worth having takes work”
I think that sums it up fairly well.
People who are lazy and demand a living after spending $97 on some ebook or course, deserve to fail from not working. It seems fair.
People who promise such, IMHO will ultimately get what they deserve in hell.
People who are prepared to work, need to know that there is a solution, but it takes work and time. And it wil take less time, if you do the “right” work.
What the right work is, is more than we can discover in one page, let alone one comment.

But my main point is this.

2) Here is the magic button. The secret sauce, The missing link. And you can have it for $1997. And it is not a new expression.
“Do what you are PASSIONATE about”.
Now I know your reaction. Mine was the same. “yeah well I like this a bit, so I’ll do that”. “What I really care about won’t make money, so I had better pick something related but which will make more money”
NO! NO and NO.
You WILL ultimately fail with that approach. You can call it LOA, or focus or business vision, or whatever you want. But it you don’t fail to launch, within 8 years you will have failed, or wanted to have.
When that common motto says “PASSION” that is what it means. What would you die for? What principle would you defend?

If you are saying “fool” then you are one of those people in it for the money. And you will fail. It’s not my fault. Or my wish. But you will fail. Within 8 years.

Certainly the answer is not easy.Yes we may have to make some compromises along the way, as we al need to eat “today”. But unless the CORE of your BUSINESS is genuine, you are actually passionate about it, then you are just going throug the motions of making money. Maybe you will make money. We don’t care. Will you be happy? I seriously doubt it.
Should we all give up and just do what we want? NO that is not what I am saying either.

There are 2 keys to what I said above. CORE and BUSINESS. Firstly treat it like a business, not a hobby. Else just have a hobby and don’t stress out. That is fine. Get a job. Become freelance. It isn’t that bad. There is nothing wrong with having a hobby. Actually it is great and you will live longer and bring some joy in to the world.
The CORE thing is harder, as you have to look deep in to who you are and what credentials and experience and desires you have. There isn’t space here.

So to summise, if you are just doing it for the money, you will ultimately fail.
If you need to buy some “thing” to tell you that you can make money, then you are doomed. If you don’t believe in what you are doing enough to feel that already, then it is the wrong thing to do. And no matter how much you spend on “feel bettter”, “you can do it” information, that fact won’t change.

If you don’t believe me, just imagine one thing…

You meet a girl who is genuinely enthusiastic and happy and excited about what she does. Even if you do not want it, would you respect her?
Compare that to a girl who has spent $1997 on a course and says “yes I am in a great business and my course says I will make money” would you respect her?

Now imaginge both women are selling the same thing and you actually wanted it. Who would you buy from?

Which girl would you rather be?

If you don’t believe yourself, don’t expect to still be in business in 8 years.

What do think Seth Godin meant by “being remarkable” (something Shakespeare coined by the way)

There is also another common phrase that you need to have to do business. But I won’t ell you what it is here for fee. Becaue if it free you won’t value it. And you need to value it. Can you guess what it is yet?

Oh yeah just paypal me the $1997. I trust you :-)

Peace and light
Peter

Hi Caroline,

As usual, you have cleared up another interesting topic! The promise of making oodles of money online is like a mirage that normal people would gravitate to, but I guess people need to do some thinking for themselves before they believe in any “guru”. Even Bill Gates had to start small.

Tuesdays last blog post..Top Affiliate Marketing Advice for Newbies

You have made some good points, but I want to speak up for the learning opportunities that exist on the Internet.

Even though I had owned businesses pre-Internet days, I have found ebooks, free teleseminars (even though they are designed to promote paid products) very helpful in learning to build an online business. Although it’s important to be very discerning in selecting the ones to pay for, in the process of investing money on products it’s inevitable that some materials will be more helpful than others.

You’re right, of course, that there is no magic button and that creating a successful site or product requires persistent work and learning from your mistakes. I have a one-year old blog that’s not yet earning its keep, but I realized why. I was spreading myself too thin among 15 websites, 2 other blogs and 2 newsletters. Coming to that realization and focusing on my new blog has led me to phase out one blog and cut back on the other.

I was encouraged by your article and am committed to meeting the needs of my readers. By focusing on quality content and consistent posting, I will attract and serve visitors and turn them into subscriber. I can already see a difference at least in the number of visitors and comments. The income will come with increased traffic.

Thanks.

I think every newbie should first learn about how to bring traffic to a website or blog. Through search engines and through other means.

This I feel is the very first step and once they master this, they would be able to earn a decent income when they put up their niche website. There is no point in spending money on courses if they don’t know to to bring traffic to a website. Putting up a website or blog without this knowledge would be like opening a great store in the middle of a dense forest.
