Caroline’s Favourite Links #14

March 16, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

Here’s my selections for this week… Enjoy.

The Best 25 Posts Of Your Lives - Courtney Tuttle put together a challenge in the form of a group writing project to write the best post of your life. This is the result and it makes for impressive reading.

101 Useful Resources for Online Entrepreneurs - Adnan from Blogtrepreneur has put together this impressive list of online services which can come in very handy for those of us who work online.

Optimize Your 404 Error Pages - Ades sent me an email the other day telling me that my 404 error page is not optimised, which is very true. This post tells us how to do it to help retain those visitors that arrive in error.

6 Ways to Make More Money with Less Time (CommentLuv) - Cath Lawson gives us 6 concrete ways of making money that don’t suck up all our time. She lists the pros and cons of each and provides a list of resources too.

The Biggest Problem Standing Between You And Success - John Chow is one of the most successful people that publicly blogs about his work. In this post he cuts to the chase and explains just what is standing in the way for most people, and I agree entirely with this post.

Are You a Sniper Blogger or a Gattling Gun Blogger? - A very original post by Mike Huang of Blogging-Ads. He uses an interesting analogy to compare two very different blogging styles. It immediately made me think of the computer games I play :)

Hello Caroline,

it’s sunday evening and we should be out of town dancing all night long, instead of being behind a computer screen ;)

Just kidding :)

BTW, your suggested links are very informative and helpful, thank you… i am just wondering if you got those links while surfing or while being subscribed to many blogs at a time….

I have to say that 2 of these links stood out for me. The 404 error one and 6 ways to make money. Thanks for the links Caroline. I look forward to them every week.

Thanks very much for the linklove Caroline. Steven Snell did 99% of the legwork for the article, so I can’t take the full credit ;)

John Chow says that if a rich person has their money taken away they will soon have it back.

I am happy to receive all his money - will provide my account details to him. Until he, or one of the many other rich people who say this, does this, I will remain unconvinced.

Also, this doesn’t prove the point. There are intangibles in the environment as well as money. So he’d need to make the money back under another name for instance.

I eagerly look forward to just one of these people backing their words with their actions.

John’s post is not bad if you can get past the spelling errors. He makes enough money you thin he could hire someone to proof read his posts and fix the errors.

I have to agree with Evan. There are other factors. In many ways John got lucky. He started his blog with his twist on things at the right time and he marketed the living daylights out of it. Will we see another Make Money Online blog reach his level of success? Doubtful. It has been done now. Not to mention I think people are starting to get tired of being thought of strictly as a commodity, as a way for a blogger to make money. There must be a better way to make money online besides treating every reader as a dollar sign, plastering every square inch on a blog with ads and only writing one post a week that is not a paid review. IMHO.

Caroline, thanks a bunch for the plug, but I have to make one correction. That post was actually guest posted by MindBlogger and I don’t want to take credit for it :)

I’m actually honored that you read my blog so much :) THANKS!

Lee,

How I hope you are right. I guess I’m allergic to marketing hype anyway. How I long for a focus on value and quality. For doing which I am grateful to Caroline and some others.

@NBWeb, both. I get links from all over - blogs I read, pages I stumble, Social media sites, links people send me and so on.

@Evan, I agree with John on that one. If you don’t have the ‘money mindset’ then you wont be able to keep it if you come into an unexpected windfall. Likewise, those who do have the ‘money mindset’ will always be able to survive and thrive even if they lose everything and have to start over. I am a firm believer in this theory.

@Lee, you are seriously picking holes in John’s spelling when the guy pulls in 30k a month from his blog alone? Who cares!

@Mike, yeah your blog has made my ‘hit list’ now :)

One of the most important tipps here ist to optimize 404 error pages.

I was working with another CMS on my page and than I changed the CMS to another URL stucture. The whole URLs gone, and the users couldn’t see any of my page, beacuse of 404 Error.

Thanks Carroline

Caroline, I am impressed with everything you write. I can see why you are rocketing up the charts with a pagerank of 5! Number 12 on 45n5’s top 100! Reading your blog is definitely the best use of my time. thank you!

Caroline -

These are some great links! Thanks for sharing. I’ve now found a couple of other blogs that make a lot of sense to me and I’ll be following them.

I especially liked Cath Lawson’s post you mention. The topic is something I’ve been researching quite a lot since reading Tim Ferriss’ book last year, so seeing someone else’s breakdown is helpful.

While I do agree with John Chow’s post and can see why you included it - he raises some good points - I must say, his style and blog generally just turn me off. If you can wade through all of the stuff, there are some real gems there but frankly, it isn’t usually worth my time to search for them. Thanks for sharing one that was worth reading.

@Caroline I am poking holes at his spelling. I don’t give a care how money he makes he can learn to spell. I get emails and resumes from people all the time and I won’t even think of talking to them if they can’t spell in the email or letter. The fact that he makes 30k a month is all the more reason he should not have mistakes like that. Making money is no excuse. He can spend some of that money and hire someone to proof read the post for crying out loud.

If your spelling was like his I would not even subscribe to your blog.

@Lee, if I was hiring somebody as a writer or for some kind of job, I would certainly use poor spelling as a ‘filtering out’ criteria. But you seem to use it as a factor for determining which blogs to read. It’s a shame because you might miss out on some useful information because of poor spelling.

I think the problem with your hypothesis/assumption is that you think a blogger’s earnings are directly related to his value/worth. I would (and I am sure Lee would also) argue that the amount of money a blogger is able to earn is not directly related to his value as a blogger/person. This seems terribly superficial and shallow. Perhaps I feel that way because I do not make that much money. Maybe if I did make that much money I would be so arrogant to measure myself against others because of my wealth. I might, but I hope I wouldn’t.

I believe value and worth have to come from—in the blogging world—our ability to connect, communicate and be in relationship with readers/people. I think an argument should be made that a blogger has value because he is able to be in community. However, I believe (and I think this is what Lee was getting at) that certain bloggers have lost touch with the community around him/her, because he/she doesn’t take the time to observe how he/she communicates and the abuses of the readership by constant reviews.

Caroline, I do not believe Lee or I are missing anything. Someone who isn’t setting himself or herself up to be in community, to communicate openly and accessibly, and be in a relationship abuses me as a reader because they are not interested in me as a reader/person but only as a dollar figure. There has to be a give and take in relationships and I will not be in a relationship with someone who only takes. It’s not about poor spelling or grammar but the intention (of lack thereof) behind it.

Caroline,

I am only asking John Chow to test his theory. He hasn’t done so. So why should I believe it?

I am, as ever, ready to receive his money and watch him rebuild his business (in a new industry, under a different name, not using existing skills). I will hold the money in trust and return it to him when he is successful (as he seems so confident of being). I am only asking him to test his belief. This is only reasonable, surely.

@Rhett, no I just think that by immediately discounting an article due to spelling errors means that you may be losing out on valuable information. I linked to John’s article because I think it is good, not because he earns a lot of money. The fact that he earns a lot means that he knows what he is talking about.

@Evan, it’s not ‘his’ theory. The idea that money flows to people who know how to attract it is as old as the ages. But why should John have to ‘test the theory’ anyway? Just because somebody has money doesn’t mean that they need to justify their having it to the outside world. So no, I don’t think that is a reasonable request at all. If I started to make a lot of money and documented it here would you suddenly ask me to prove myself by doing it all over again?
