Caroline’s Favourite Links & Blogs #3

October 13, 2007 Posted under: Miscellaneous by Caroline Middlebrook

I still have almost 900 unread posts in my feed reader and some of these are from blogs that I know are good. There is a lot of good stuff out there and the more blogs I catch up with, the longer it takes me to keep up! Anyway, this week I’d like to showcase a few more blogs that I like and some cool links.

Blogs that I Like

Copyblogger

I have to admit, I am a relatively new reader of Copyblogger. When I first looked at it I thought it looked a bit too business-like so I skipped it but over time I kept seeing their posts being highlighted on other blogs and they drew me in. This is a classic case of the content being king! The blog is all about the art of copywriting so as you can imagine, the quality of the writing is top-notch.

The main person behind the blog is Brian Clark and I like his style of writing. Recently I’m seeing quite a few guest posts, I tend to skip them (I really dislike guest posts most of the time!). There is some real gold in the archives with several excellent posts about headlines. In addition, there is some true flagship content in the form if the Copywriting 101 , and the SEO Copywriting series of posts.
The archives are available through category links but it would be nice if there was a chronological archive too, though I’m beginning to realise that perhaps I am the only person on the planet who likes to read things ‘from the beginning’ :)

WarriorBlog

I discovered WarriorBlog quite recently when Sean came to my blog and left some comments. I always check out the sites of anyone who comments here so I had a peek and subscribed straight away. His blog has been going a little while longer than mine so is also quite new but in that time he has put out some posts that are genuinely useful - not just a few glossed-over tips. For example:

Using a Torrent Site to Make Money - I’ve never seen this covered before, it’s down in my ‘idea’ book :)

How to Make Money Online Without Money - This is a really nice roundup all all the tools you need for Internet marketing, and shows free versions of them all. There’s just no excuse now not to get started!

The thing i really like about Sean’s blog is that it shows that Sean knows what he is talking about. He is one of the person who really is making money, rather than just talking about or experimenting with it (like me!).

45n5

Funny name for a blog huh! I first heard of Mark from 45n5 from the Thirty Day Challenge and I didn’t read his blog at first because he was a bit mean about it so I assumed he was just a <insert rude word here> :) However, since then I have seen him pop up around the net all over the place and I have come to realise that Mark is not afraid to speak his mind. He does a lot of video blogging and he tells it just like it is. I like honesty, I don’t necessarily agree with everything he says but I don’t need to.

Too many blogs are just blaaaaahhh and boring, Mark is anything but boring. He has the guts to challenge people, his video You Will NOT Make Money Online is a great example of where he says things that are true but nobody else wants to hear. Also, he doesn’t just blog. He has developed the top 100 money blogs (needs renaming, it’s over 200 now!) and has new development projects in the works. Very interesting stuff.

Cool Links Around the Blogosphere

[1] How Do You Value Blogs - over the last week or so I have been watching Ed Dale’s Dominiche launch videos with interest so this post by Chris Garrett was also very interesting. A blog is a web property that can be sold like any other. If you have blogs that you think you might want to sell one day, this is a good read.

[2] 90% of the Rankings Equation Lies in These 4 Factors - Rand Fishkin is a prominent name in the SEO industry but unlike those who do nothing but slate Google, harp on about conferences and gossip all day long, Rand actually provides some really useful content and a lot of it is good for those of us who are not SEO experts. This post highlights the 4 most important points that affect rankings.

[3] Want to Succeed? Then Get off Your Ass and Work - I’m sure most of us know by now that there is no success without work, this short post reminds us that successful people like Shoemoney did not get where they are now without years of hard work beforehand.

[4] How to Sell Ads on Your Blog With Hardly Any Traffic - In this industry the rich seem to get richer don’t they. The bigger blogs attract the best advertising, get linked to more and get voted up in social media all the time. How are we little blogs supposed to let a look in? This post by Jim Kukral is a step-by-step guide to getting started with direct advertising no matter how low your traffic level is.

[5] 4 Reasons Why Google Isn’t Penalizing You and You Are Just Paranoid - There has been much talk this week of Google dropping PageRank on a number of prominent blogs. Thankfully being unranked, I don’t have to concern myself over that particular statistic! For those of you who have been fretting about it, this post by Blogging Bits should bring you back down to earth and put your mind at rest.

[6] Social Bookmarking and SEO - Last week I talked about how Social Bookmarking could be used in niche marketing so this post from Lyndon at Cornwall SEO came in quite useful. He shows a great tip for judging the effectiveness of the various social bookmarking sites out there.

[7] How to Become a Famous Blogger - Is Darren at ProBlogger revealing all his secrets to fame and fortune? Not exactly. Stick your humour hat on before you click :-)

@45n5, No worries Mark. I don’t have a webcam yet so the only video I could do at the moment is of the screencast variety. Might try that out soon.

@Warrior, np :D

Have you heard of the Torrent Method? Start with an eBook you write + 3 powerpoint presentations (used for tutorials) converted into Windows Media Player movies, and perhaps a webcam movie. Don’t have an eBook? Then buy about 5 of them that you think are good or that others think are good, then learn from them and rewrite them in your own words. In the eBook, do not give reference to your name, company name, email address, address, phone number, or real name.

Have a friend click some of the ads that pay well on your blog (Google AdSense can tell you that) and see the content on the page that follows the click. What you want is a landing page with static content on it. Now take like the 5th word from that and write it down. Label that word as your “password”.

Zip this content up with a password-protected zip file. (Use the latest Winzip to avoid hacking the password.) Use the password you wrote down.

Google on the Internet on how to make a torrent file from the zip file.

Create like dozens of this kind of content, each unique.

Using a program called TOR, you can cloak your IP address. Now go sign up with several torrent sites to upload these torrent files. This will initially mean that you host these torrents (Google on that) until they become established.

The cash starts to come in initially when the downloaders click the link in your readme, get their so-called password to unlock the zip file, and that link was to an ad you had hooked through some ad network like Azoogle.

Eventually you don’t need to host the files anymore because these are torrents and the P2P networks across the world rehost these files for you. So, while you walk away from your computer completely, the torrents of the world are still serving this material up to happy downloaders who then put ad revenue right into your bank account.

Using this technique, I’ve seen people make $8000 in a single evening, and then it keeps making recurring revenue for you for several days.

The catch is that the ad networks check the “referer” variable on their systems in some cases and won’t find one with a method like this. To prevent that, first create a landing page on the web that is designed to look like what the ad network wants, and then the README file they received tells them to click an ad on that page and read the 5th word on the landing page of that ad.
