Article Directories for Article Marketing

February 27, 2009 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

This post contains a list of article directories that allow free submissions of articles for article marketing purposes. Refer to my previous posts in the series for details about how to use these sites.

Due to the nature of a list like this, it is bound to be out of date almost as soon as it is published so like my list of dofollow social bookmarking sites I shall update it periodically every couple of months or so. If you know of a directory on this link please list it in the comments section and I shall incorporate it on the next update.

The PageRank of the directory is listed in brackets

EZA always sends me a lot of traffic, but it has pretty tough editorial guidelines.

In Jan and Feb 2009, Article Dashboard and Article Alley were my no 2 and no 3 sources of traffic after EZA.

Go Articles and Easy Articles are both better than nothing. Their performance has dropped this year.

Basically, EZA sends me 84% of my traffic, Article Dashboard 7%, Article Alley 4%, Go Articles 2%, Article Click (not on your list) 1%, Easy Articles 0.15%.

Articles Base is not accepting new authors.

Dime-Co just underwent a major site revamp – I tried submitting a few articles, but nothing seems to have happened.

Article Cube – 0 traffic.

Article Depot – 0 traffic.

Search Warp – canceled my account with no reason given. All they were willing to say was that I violated their TOS. Which TOS? They refused to tell me.

That was a huge list but it would be good to know which ones are worth bothering with. That is which works for backlinks which works for traffic.

And regards to traffic are your experience (Caroline) the same as Calvins?

It’s good to update these posts. I have only written for ezine articles so far, but will consider checking out a few others with a solid pagerank.

@Calvin, thanks for the feedback, that is very useful.

@Andreas, if you look back through my earlier articles in the series you will see that I am aiming for mass distrubution in order to get backlinks rather than direct traffic. For that strategy, in general the higher the PageRank the better, I don’t worry about the traffic at all.

Caroline thanks for the list of places to check out. There are so many directories it is great to have a list to start from. If we are looking for back links it is important to check out which ones of these allow do follow links in the body. EA says they don’t but if you stick them below the fold and the link is not just a sales pitch it has worked for me.
@Calvin-Thanks for the report from the trenches. I have only used EA so I will try the other two you have had luck with.

Caroline, I think I’m the exact opposite of you when it comes to article marketing. I aim first and foremost to generate traffic and consider the backlinks a bonus. For some of my small niche sites almost all the traffic comes from articles I submitted to EZA and a few other directories.

This is a great list. It’s hard to find a good reference for all of the article directories out there, yet they serve as a great way to get extra backlinks to your site. I’ll be bookmarking this post!

Kevon Edmondss last blog post..Keith Mitchell: After 7’s Untold Story

@Agrande, I wouldn’t rely on that – very few directories will allow those links in the body. However that’s not the point because every single one allows you to place your links in the resource box – that is the key!

@Mike, that approach works too, whatever floats your boat really!

Nice list! As the admin for an article directory website, I’d like to remind your readers to read the website’s rules before submitting their article. I have to reject a lot of articles because they don’t follow the rules and they aren’t appropriate for my article directory. Keep up the good work Caroline!

Hmm. There are a few that I have seen and a few that I haven’t. Somebody was commenting about zero traffic. It is important to remember that it depends on your chosen area. Take a look at this article directory. It doesn’t look to be indexed yet but still receives a modest amount of traffic.

Terry, I think it is because they are considered “a bad neighborhood” and therefore things look a little strange. If you do a site search in Google you’ll see the crap that the site is made up of:

Hm. I dont think that is the case. It doesn’t look to be one more website looking for hits. The site is not receiving traffic from that crap quite simply because all the articles hosted on it are of high quality. In fact there is not a single undesirable article.

Terry, I’m not sure I’m following you. Did you click my link? All the first ten hits are utter crap (judging from the title and the description). Everything from “sexy indian mms” to “register code for magic dvd ripper”.

Whether or not the site receives traffic I don’t know. I can just see the indexed pages and that doesn’t look good.

Hi Caroline!

I prefer submitting to article directories one by one (instead of using some automatic submission service)

I have a list of about 100 “top” article directories with high PageRank.

However, when i check again the PR a few weeks later, it really suprised me that many (more than 20%) of the site’s PR have change erratically sometime from PR 5 to PR 2 for a few days… and then back to PR 5 again. A pattern which I dont understand.

I think there must be a better way of “ranking” these sites other than PR. Hence I start a website (officeray.com) and start building a database of article directories with ranking based on Alexa, Pagerank and most importantly “US Visitors” per month.

If you spent some time checking most of the article directories, you will be shocked that a large majority of them (over 95%) have visitors demographic so “unbalanced” with India has the highest percentage of the visitors.

It usually goes like this, India visitors 65%, US visitors 15%, UK visitors 2%, and the rest belong to other part of the world.

Hence even if a website has a high PR, IMHO if it is so skew towards India, it might not as useful as we think it is.

Hence I also based my ranking on “Monthly visitors from US”

I will be posting more of my experience compiling this list some day…

@Rayman, fluctuations in PR are normal as Google is constantly adjusting the rankings of sites. This is precisely why I prefer to use a submission service because then I can just hit them all and not worry about trying to find the ones with high PR.
