A Twitter / StumbleUpon Combo to Benefit the Blogosphere

February 13, 2008 Posted under: Promotion by Caroline Middlebrook

I’ve been a user of Twitter for many months now. If you don’t know what Twitter is then read my guide on it. I’ve also been a fan of StumbleUpon for just as long and I’ve talked about its benefits several times on this blog. I’ve just noticed a way of using them both together that benefits both myself and other bloggers…

Stumbling Good Posts

First of all let me just explain a little bit about the way in which StumbleUpon works – when you submit a page to the StumbleUpon network (and I mean submit, not just thumbs up), the votes that the page accumulates has an effect on your ‘audience score’ within StumbleUpon.

The audience score used to be public but it is hidden now to prevent it from being abused. Basically, the higher your audience score the more people will be shown pages that you submit and vote for. In other words, a higher audience score gives you the power to generate more traffic for the pages that you like.

So, when you submit a page to StumbleUpon you are credited with that submission and if lots of other people like that page and give it a thumbs up, your audience score increases. Of course the reverse is also true – if you submit a bunch of crap which nobody likes then your score will go down. So this means that it is in your best interests to submit content which you believe will be appreciated.

There are other benefits too – other people see what you submit and what you give a thumbs up to. A list of all of these shows up in your profile. If people like your Stumble Page then they might decide to be your fan and this also increases your audience score. At the time of writing, I have over 300 fans on StumbleUpon.

Using Twitter for Notification

Any decent blogger will have read my Twitter Guide by now (!) and will be regularly using it to talk about topics related to their blog and drop in links to their blog posts. Twitter is an instant notification service – somebody sends a tweet and all their followers get it instantly.

Compare that to typical forms of notification such as RSS readers. Many blogs such as WordPress using a pinging system that can cause quite a delay. I subscribe to my own feed both via email and in my offline reader and it often takes several hours for my posts to appear. However, if I am online when I publish the post (I often schedule them to appear when I’m out partying or whatever!) then I tend to send out a tweet as well with the link.

Assuming other bloggers do this too – and I know lots of them do, Twitter then becomes a great way of being notified of new blog posts instantly. If you happen to subscribe to cool guys like Chris Garrett and see the tweet about his latest blog post about growing your blog then you might be one of the first to visit the post and be able to submit it to StumbleUpon.

This is what I did yesterday and that post has now had around a dozen thumbs up votes from other people so hopefully Chris is seeing a little extra traffic to that post now and my audience score just got a bit better. Win, win situation see?

Being the First = Good

Being one of the first people to see a good quality blog post is very useful. I’ve already discussed one of the benefits of submitting to StumbleUpon but there are others too:

  • StumbleUpon sends traffic, bloggers like traffic, and you can see exactly who submitted the page so the blogger may appreciate the Stumble.
  • The content may also be suitable for other social media such as Digg, Reddit etc. This has a similar effect – if you submit good quality content that gets voted up, it raises your profile.
  • Being one of the first people to see a post gives you the chance to be one of the first to comment and I’ve spoken extensively about the power of blog commenting.

Following Other Bloggers

When I released my Twitter Guide I turned off the notifications that you get when you have a new follower as I was getting so many that I couldn’t cope. As a result, I have missed quite a few interesting people who follow me and I haven’t followed many new people in quite a while.

After making this little observation I made a point to go through all of the blogs in my reader and see if there were any bloggers using Twitter that I wasn’t following and there were!

Of course there is a downside to the instant notification nature of Twitter – this technique only really works for blogs in the same timezone as yourself. As I’m in the UK I’ll see tweets from Chris Garrett as he’s another UK blogger but most of the people I follow are in the US so that doesn’t work as well for me.

If you have an Internet Marketing related blog and you use Twitter then get in touch with me and let me know your profile.

If you are interested in learning how StumbleUpon can be used to drive traffic to your website then check out my course, Stumble Rush. You can enroll now to receive 10 completely free lessons due for release in July 2008.

Guess I’m the first here :) Thanks, that sure clears up a lot about SU. I never knew the scoring system and refuse to submit new post because I thought one have to do lots of review before the submission becomes significant.

Never use Tweeter neither, I’m in Malaysia and the time difference will cause more misery! But I’ll give it a try first..

I’m gonna stumble this one for sure ;)

I’ve still yet to use Twitter I should really take a tomorrow morning and set myself up an account there. As for as SU goes I love that site and it has been a cause for roughly 30-40% of my traffic.

I heavily promote SU and Digg but want to branch out slowly to the other social bookmarking websites as well.

Thanks for another great post Caroline :)

I must admit that too have not ventured into the world of Twitter, although I’ve read many a post on the subject.

I guess I’ve delayed getting into Twitter due to being somewhat overwhelmed at times by efforts to build a network of same-niche bloggers and thought that Twitter was just ONE MORE to add to the bunch.

Perhaps I’ll look into it further now. That is, after I’ve thoroughly read your Twitter Guide, again.

I just joined Twitter last week, and I’m reading through your Twitter series. I hope it is as successful for me as it appears to be for you. Thanks for the excellent information on both of these social media!

Hmmm I think it may be time for a follow up post about Twitter. What I like about it is that it takes me literally just *seconds* to put out a tweet and I do this perhaps half a dozen times a day at the most - it’s literally 2 minutes out of my day and it helps me keep in touch, and brings me traffic.

I didn’t know you were in the UK Caroline!!! So am I!

I have used StumbleUpon for a while and love it but can’t get to grips with Twitter however. I add a twitter but never see myself in the Timeline and besides that Twitter seems so chaotic and disjointed to me, I’ll keep trying and see what results I get.

Thanks for yet another great post!

Hi Caroline - thanks for the great tips. I only just started using Stumbleupon and I don’t yet Twitter.

I had noticed that almost anything by the top bloggers gets stumbled, regardless of quality. And I did wonder why. But, I’m guessing that people are voting because they know there’s going to be more votes in favor of the top bloggers and that will earn them a higher rating. Am I understanding this correctly? I’m still finding it quite complicated to use.

@Fran, yep I sure am! Twitter is a strange old beast and the nature of it changes completely with a different crowd of people so its all about choosing who you follow - I should probably mention that in my guide.

@Catherine, the big bloggers get their stuff stumbled simply because they have so many readers - it’s a numbers game. That’s why it gets easier to grow your blog once its already reached a certain size.

Great post Caroline and thanks for the stumble, while we’re on the subject. I was a late arrival to both Twitter and StumbleUpon. Started Stumbling 4 or 5 months ago and started using Twitter only a month or two ago.

I love SU and I believe my audience score is getting up there. I like the idea of Twitter, but it’s VERY hard to keep up with everyone. I only have 30 some followers and 30 some who I’m following and everytime I log in there’s a few new pages of tweets to catch up on.

Anyway, I can see the power in Twitter and although I’m still making updates every so often I don’t think it’ll be something I really get into; it’s just too time consuming if you want to keep up with people and respond to them.

Considering you just started this blog a few months ago and your well on your way to 2,000 subscribers I’ll listen to any blogging advice you have ;) Thanks for that.

Caroline, again, perhaps you have posted this Stumble info before, I have missed it , but this is the best explanation of the system I have seen, Twitter on the other hand is not something I have been able to wrap my mind around, remember I’m old

Hi Caroline - I hope you don’t mind me asking another question, but you seem to know a lot of good info about stumbleupon. I’ve only being using it for a couple of weeks. And I think I’ve hit problems already.

One of my blog readers decided to join too but he insisted on cheating and paying someone for stumbles. Then yesterday I noticed that he had stumbled lots of my pages in a row. I clicked on one and instead of having a proper category it said spam.

I asked him to stop and I hope he has, but I’m wondering if I’ll be penalised because of this. I know you mentioned they stop showing people’s pages. And is there anything I can do about it if I have?

Thanks Caroline - I’d really appreciate any advice you could give.

@Josh, the mistake your making is trying to catch up. Twitter is real time so don’t try to catch up with it. Think of it like just tuning into a radio - you listen when its on but you dont usually try and record the radio in case you miss it.

@Catherine, that’s something I am not sure about. Your best bet is to contact SU admin, explain that you are the owner of those pages and that they were submitted without your permission and ask the spam tag to be dropped.

Thanks for the advice Caroline. I’ll do that. I would hate for people to think my pages were spam.

Stumbling is not only fun, but also a great tool for promotions. It’s true that the quality score is highly influenced by the number of discovered urls you have and the respective number of thumbs up it gets. It’s a good idea to be always on the look out for great content to discover, for profile building. A good place to start is Digg’s upcoming page, where the next “hot” post get attention; be the first to submit to stumbleupon and the forthcoming traffic from digg, when the respective post gets popular, will also thumbs up (who ever has the SU toolbar installed), thus contributing a great deal to your profile. Twitter is loads of fun too :P, I’m your “loyal follower” as of now :D.

@Ian, nope, I’ve never paid a penny in advertising so far. To be honest with SU I think its unnecessary because good content will take off on its on without needing the extra push. If I was going to pay for advertising I’d pay for something I couldn’t get free.

Thanks Caroline. I must admit that I’m intrigued to know where Stumbles income comes from. I realise people can pay a fee for some more advanced membership features ($20 from memory), bit I’m really curious where their income comes from.

I realise those $20 adds up, but I see an awful lot of encouragement for us to use the stumble button. I have done that a fair bit, but can’t find a way of stopping photos so I;ve stopped.

I have this theory that they encourage that (and possibly reward those who do) because they get $0.05 per click because some of those Stumbles are paid for.

@Ian, as far as I know, quite a lot of people use the StumbleUpon paid service as 5c a click is a lot cheaper than most clicks you can buy from AdSense etc. It is probably better suited to niches that dont naturally do as well on SU. With this niche, everybody and their uncle uses SU so its easier to get free traffic than say the deep water fishing niche.
