A Helping Hand Overcoming A Personal Crisis

August 2, 2008 Posted under: Personal by Caroline Middlebrook

3 Months ago I found my personal life to be in the toilet and hit a very low point. A couple of weeks later I mentioned it on the blog and decided to just stop working while I hibernated on the sofa.

A couple of days later I was approached by a life coach called Massimo Gaetani who offered to coach me. At first I declined the offer. I was in such a state that I could barely move from the sofa and I felt as though my life was totally meaningless so the last thing I wanted to do was work on ‘goals’.

However, he offered to coach me in exchange for some help with his blogs, and also as a personal challenge to himself. Massimo’s approach is to guide clients through the process of making their own decisions and that includes setting the goals. Well I certainly gave him a challenge… from my point of horrendous anxiety attacks, nightmares, inability to sleep, depression I set my first goal to be to feel enthusiastic and positive for all waking hours! The second was to launch Traffic Rush and the third was to get this blog to 3,000 subscribers.

Of course, the second two goals were irrelevant without the first one. At the beginning I didn’t actually care about work at all and I didn’t want to do anything but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. The first few weeks were very slow but after that things really started to change and I actually achieved all three goals. You can of course see the evidence of the last two for yourselves.

I’d really like to thank Massimo for doing this for me. He has given me so much of his time and attention for little personal gain. There is no way I could achieved any of those things without his help and when I think if where I was emotionally just 10 weeks ago and where I am today, it truly is transformational.

Massimo would really like to work with other bloggers and if you’re in a position where you have some goals that you’d like to achieve then I can highly recommend him. His preferred method of coaching is to conduct 1-hour sessions over Skype on a weekly basis over 12 weeks but he is flexible.

I cut his sessions short. I had the 11th session a few days ago and I knew I had achieved everything I had set out and now with the Thirty Day Challenge starting I’m ready to move in new directions.

So, thanks again Massimo, and please contact him if you think you can benefit from his coaching!

I’ve been reading this blog for a long time and I missed that post before. I’m so glad to hear that a life coach was able to help you at this point in time. People have so many ideas of what life coaching is but I think its speak better when someone can share the results they have gotten from it. As a life coach myself its just great to get to hear this. Caroline I hope your journey continues toward the positive and look forward to seeing what happens with stumblerush once all the free ten week trainings come to a close

Great idea …. unfortunately his fee would be something I couldn’t afford right now.

I am happy that you overcame what you were going through. It a lot of people don’t love her comment and just completely take their life right down the tube. This is really a feel-good story and God bless the man that helped you.

I am really glad to see that you pulled your self out of your depression, that a bad place to be in believe me I was ready to call it quits a few weeks ago and just give up but with the LORDS help I was able to pull my self out of it and get positive again.
Thanks for the inspiring blog.
Many blessings

@Paddy, yes I must admit that had he wanted the usual fee then I would have declined. However, if I was wanting to achieve business goals that would earn me money then that’s different.

@Arthur, I had a lot of people saying to me things such as “this too shall pass”, and even though it didn’t feel like that inside, I knew it intellectually so I was willing to do anything I possibly could to pull me out. Now that I have, I am so grateful to everybody who helped me.

Just came to your blog and downloaded the pdf. Great. RSS is also mine now :-)

Hope your business is doing ok.

While it is true it took some prodding from your life coach it was still you who had to want to do it. He just provided the tools and showed you how to use them. You show be proud of yourself. Congrats!

Caroline,

I remember how you felt in December and remember I had used the fact that my hairdresser had chopped off 8 inches of dead hair to encourage both of us to start fresh.

The idea of a life coach is brilliant. Sometimes you cannot do it on your own - as Bono would sing.

You have to know when to reach out and ask (and receive) help.

Good on you girl for going that road and achieving your goals.

I will look up your coach, as I would welcome some help myself!

Sometimes we can’t do it all alone. Teamwork helped guide you through a crisis and more. Sharing the problem may have halved the load you had to bear in order to get your life back on track and moving forward again. Hopefully, your endorsement of Massimo Gaetani will add to his success, too.

My compliments to both you and Mr. Gaetani. May fortune continue to shine on both of you.

Thanks for the good words Caroline. It was a pleasure working with you and you did the great job: I just asked questions :-) You have been one of the easiest clients to work with thanks to your pragmatic approach to things.

In return you helped solving lots of technical problems and launching my Martial What? blog so I feel I well spent the hours I invested in you.

All the best with both your current blogs and all the projects you are starting.

Caroline,

That is very, very interesting.

First let me say how glad I am you got over this (I have only just found your blog but have found it very interesting and subscribed to your RSS feed). It is a testament to your personality to beat demons like that.

I suffered from depression a couple of years ago and it took me a good while to get past that - and in the end needed help from a therapist.

Now I have a family member who is obviously going through the same symptoms I did when I started getting lost in my depression - but is refusing to see a therapist. A ‘life coach’ might be a more acceptable solution, especially when pitched with the helping with business goals angle. certainly something I shall run by them.

Thanks for this post, it is wonderful soul bareing posts like these that can really help people.

Nick

How wonderful that someone reached out to you like that. I’ve been working with a life coach and finding it awesome. Unfortunately we’ve had to break mid-way because of a number of factors but I really want to get back into it.

Maybe after the 30 Day Challenge….

That’s great that you found him in your time of need! I’ve had many a time where I just wanted to chuck it all away and didn’t get much of anything done for days.

Sounds like you’re on track now!

You’ve done a good job by seeking a service of a life coach.

A value of a life coach cannot be undermined as coaches spend much of their time developing, supporting and training their clients, caring about their clients and their success and their values is like an oil that keeps the coaching process working smoothly.

Thank you for your post. I am glad you found your way out of the mire. I was in that place for a while. Couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. Couldn’t figure out why I burst into tears at the most inappropriate of times. With the help of a few good friends and a great Dr. I found out I wasn’t crazy I was ill. I have MS and these caring people have helped me to turn my life around. The MS will never get better but my mood swings have stopped and I have learned to smile at the blows that life deals you. Sometimes you need a mentor or a friend. God bless you.

Hi Caroline - I read with interest your testimonial on the Maga Coaching website and your various blogs describing the low times you have experienced.

I too am from Cambridge and have made contact with Massimo with a view to obtaining some life coaching. However, like the situation you were in even this will be a struggle given the way I have been feeling of late. I would be very interested to hear of the other things you did to lift yourself from the lows you were experiencing. I have read several books now and whilst a few have struck a cord with me on the whole its very difficult to practice what they preach. Your thoughts and advice would be most welcome.

Thanks.

@Steve, there were a few things I did. I think the most significant is that I took things very slowly at first - I didn’t do any work at all for a few weeks. I immersed myself in materials that made me feel better. I watched TV that I liked, I read tons of books & uplifting blogs, listened to podcasts - check out Hay House Radio for instance. I went on lots of walks, I journalled. I just did everything I could to clean up the mess that was in my head and inched back into normal life very, very slowly.
