30DC 2008 - My Marketing Strategy For This Year

August 5, 2008 Posted under: Making Money Online by Caroline Middlebrook

In last year’s Thirty Day Challenge I never made any money and with a little hindsight I can now see why. So this year I want to learn from my previous mistakes and approach things a little differently.

Market Research - A Curse & A Gift

95% of marketing mistakes are made at the research stage. What this means is that people attempt to do things that have very poor profit potential and with the correct tools and research these problems could have been foreseen before any work got started. Here are some examples of typical mistakes made:

  • Creating products that people do not want
  • Creating products in a market that does not buy
  • Marketing in a market that does not have traffic

So, market research is essential and yet for me, it was also one of my biggest stumbling blocks. You see, I took it too far and spent months hunting for the perfect niche and I just never really got going! At some point you have to just get on with it!

Profitability Is Not A Yes / No Affair

One thing I figured out last year is that every niche has some potential, it’s just a matter of how much - and how much work we want to do. I posted about grading potential niches and came up with 3 grades, with the lowest being such low potential that the niche was only really good for AdSense.

So, seeing as every niche has at least some potential, I am not going to let the lack of a ‘perfect’ niche stop me from continuing. Right now I am on day 4 of the challenge and I’ve done quite a bit of research and have 3 possible niches. I’ll do some more in-depth research on those three and then simply pick the best one to continue with.

However, this year’s Thirty Day Challenge is using a very cool tool called Market Samurai (free to use for  all 30DC members for 40 days) and this thing is just bloody marvellous! I am doing in half an hour what was taking me half a day last year! It’s an absolute joy to use. So, because I can do research so much faster I’m just going to keep researching every day throughout the challenge.

Each day I’ll pick one new niche and see if I can come up with something better than I have. Now I’m not saying that I will necessarily switch part way through the challenge as I don’t want to get behind but I will keep all these ideas on file as this is something I want to continue with for a few months.

Another difference this year is that I am removing my emotions from the equation during my market research. Last year I researched all the topics I was personally interested in and became disheartened when I found very little profitability in them. This year, I don’t care. I’m just looking at the numbers and I will investigate any niche, even if it isn’t something I would naturally be inclined towards. I can always outsource content production if I really can’t standthe idea of doing it myself.

AdSense Based Sites

Last year I didn’t know too much about AdSense and indeed I still don’t but I know people that do… and I know people who are making a LOT of money with small sites monetized primarily with AdSense. After publishing that post in November I went ahead and created a small site, slapped some AdSense on it and left it. It has made me around $20-$30 ever since which is a pittance but I no longer work on that site so the revenue, no matter how small, is truly residual.

Another very, very cool feature of Market Samurai which simply was not available to me last year was the ability to research the AdWords cost per click on keywords. You can do this to some extent with a tool called SpyFu though that doesn’t return me back results on some of the phrases I have used. What this means is that using these tools I can get an idea of the profit potential of making the site into an AdSense based one.

What is interesting is that I have run my existing niche site through Market Samurai and some of the keywords I am targetting are as low as $0.22 per click but one of them is $1.88! Now something else to mention here is that this is the cost per click to the advertiser, it does not mean that I will earn that much! Typically the AdSense cut will be less than 50% of that and if your account is smart priced then it can be drastically lower.

Smart pricing is another topic entirely… but this all gives me food for thought. As I work through this year’s challenge I am going to be making note of the AdSense potential of all these niches as well as their potential for creating products and after the challenge is over I am going to build at least half a dozen niche sites geared entirely towards AdSense.

This is great advice. My perspective is working with my existing website clients to explain how marketing and messaging is just as important on the web as in print/TV to attract potential clients.

Some just do not see the correlation, which boggles the mind! They will gladly pay $10K for a print campaign, but scoff at the notion of $200 for SEO optimization.

OMG!

I am struggling just to keep up with the 30DC videos and juggle the JOB and you are doing the challenge AND posting great blog entries AND doing video “how-tos” AND AND!

You probably didn’t see my Twitter quip about English coffee/tea … but please tell me what you use for fuel!

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi Caroline,
I said I was going to do the challenge this year, but I’m honestly not feeling it, it’s probably because I’m following a different program which a little faster pace and primarily concentrates on paid search campaigns. So far it’s made me some money, so there’s potential there. I will be watching the videos and participating with my facebook group, mostly to help them bookmark and rate whatever they want. Working full time and doing this afer work is definitely a challenge, I’ve survived it so far so there’s no quitting now.

I think my problem last year was that I took niches where the top players were a little bit too hard to beat. Even when MS shows PR2 as green I think you still have to be carefull about all other data from the competitors. Ranking #46 within 3 hours may be great the first time you see it happen, but when you don’t get any higher it gets a little frustrating.

I’m actually glad I’ve done last year as I think it allows me to grasp everything from this year fast in a global picture. Also, it seems to be better organized this year. The organization of MS may have to do with that one.

Mind sharing what program you are following?

Your experience last year sounds pretty much exactly like mine.

I finally found three niche phrases, and even still they’re getting traffic. Unfortunately, none of them are buying niches (one barely is - up to $45 per month on that one after a year of hands-off aging).

I think that with a year’s experience under my belt, the niches I have this year will be significantly better.

One other note: I went full-time right around the time you did last year. Haven’t hit a home run yet, but I’m still building.

Good post Caroline and you are right about niche selection. Often we are too quick to only search in categories that we find interest in when really there are so many more possibilities. My first realm was fitness and it was a very difficult niche to crack into because of the competition. The niche I use this year will be something I don’t normally find interest in, which I think will give me an advantage because as you said sometimes emotions get the best of us.

I wish I could get Adsense to work for me. So far I have made about 5 dollars from it over nearly five months.

I think my ad design and placement is good, but my click through rate is pitiful.

I seem to be really stuck on keywords. This is my first year doing the challenge. So it’s such a relief to read of your successes and failures and feel like I’m not alone. I too am finding that the niches I’m interested in don’t seem to match the criteria being given. :(

Yeah, Adsense never worked well for me lol. I just gave up on it over time. Personal ad sales and TextLinkAds get me about $100 a month. I’m good.

Sometimes you have to remember we are in business and not let the emotions take over. But I see you are on track this year from what you learned last year.

Careful not to spread yourself too thin researching 1 new niche a day - Market Samurai appears to cost only $69, so not a huge expense to have it available as and when you need it.

Thanks for the great comments on Market Samurai.

I’m glad that you’re getting the full value out of the Market Samurai software for this year’s 30DC.

Those ‘Challengers who have been involved in the 30DC for several years (like yourself) will remember how long it used to take to get market research results in previous years. So I’m glad that we can help you to put your time to better use this year ;)

@Jeff, um, I don’t have a JOB anymore! I quit part way through last year’s 30DC! But don’t worry about keeping up with the challenge as the content will stay around after August. Last year’s material only got taken down a couple of week’s before this years.

@Koen, yes I know the feeling. I love the SEO competition module of Market Samurai for this aspect. One of the niches I have been looking at was great in terms of the keyword stats but when I looked at the top 10 in google they are all Wikipedia and big shopping sites - I had to ditch it.

@Kelly, it’s painful when you think you’re doing everything right but still don’t make money but over time you learn those little subtle details that make all the difference! I’m sure we’ll both do better this year!

@Lightening, the trick is not to get attached. If none of your passions look profitable then just look for any niche and don’t worry about your personal interest in it.

@Ralph, well AdSense is just one of many kinds of ad programs.

@Web Design, Oh yeah I will definately be buying it but I just want to have some niche ideas under my belt to come back to later - I wont be exploring them in depth at this stage.

@Brent, yup it’s wonderful lol! Now what you need to do is launch an affiliate program for us mere mortals :p

Caroline,

I have had a lot of success using adsense. It does help when you have 27,000 subscribers on one of my blogs. I am yet to use it on my new blog because right now I am trying to just get me the religious readers. However, soon I will be using it again and I assure you that it will bring me in a lot of money even though I have only 3,000 some subscribers. I am even sure on this one site that you could bring yourself in a lot of money. You should definitely try it out.

Awesome post, marketing reserach is definitely a lot tougher that it’s made out to be. I think I’m going to check out that Marketing Samauri tool that you talk about… seems like that could be a huge time saver!
